Tae Kwon-Do a martial art or a sport ?
Jack replied to Adonnis's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Adonnis, while other martial arts may become more effective at defending oneself in a street situation, Tae Kwon Do is still advantageous. If you are training in Karate, a good martial art to crosstrain in would be something like Ju Jitsu or Hapkido, since thye incorporate a lot of ground work. Some schools may only kick air, some may only teach for the sport, but in others there is semi-contact and rarely full-contact sparring also, along with bag work and pad drills. The kicking techniques in TKD can also be some of the fastest, since TKD is renowned for its fast, precise kicks. And yes, the majority of competitions with TKD practicioners involve them wearing lots of protective gear, but hey in the Olympics what do you expect? -

tkd street fighting
Jack replied to blood talon's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Glad to see you posting sensibly now, blood talon. Indeed TKD is not amazing for the streets, but there are a couple of different styles. Some schools train for sport with point sparring, while others will train being more combat-orientated. Some skills are useful for a street fight in either, since any sort of skill picked up is useful. However, if you do train the spinning kicks enough and master them, you might find a use of them for a street fight. -
Thanks for all these posts Angus, I am going to save them all to Hard Drive now to keep

Martial Arts Illustrated Lots of interesting articles, and you can find some pretty good deals in the advertismenet sections. -
With each new face that steps into a dojo/dojang, he/she should see another person he/she can help, not another person he/she can get money from. He/she should be able to explain clearly to the new guys while still helping the more advanced practicioners move along forwards in their training. Being well-mannered, kind, also with a sense of humour are also all vital, butshould also be firm and should push his/her students hard to be the best they can be. He/she should also be good at passing on knowledge and should be open to questions from the students.

Sticking Hands/Pushing Hands
Jack replied to Jack's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Thanks very much for your replies. This is definitely something I am very interested in and would like to look into further. If only I could borrow this part from Wing Chun to incorporate into my Tae Kwon Do. Hmmm, there are no Kung Fu schools in my area anyway and I'm not a fan of learning from videos and books, but do you know of a good comprehensive book or video into Chi Sau which me and my partner might be able to practice from? Thanks once more -
I've been looking on the net for a while for a clear, decent explanation on methods for these techniques, and when they might be used. The only thing I've seen on these are on a Bruce Lee biography when he's seen practicing sticking hands. It looked pretty impressive, so any info about this technique would be greatly appreciated.

What do you all think of this?
Jack replied to three60roundhouse's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Hmmm, the Judo and Jiu Jutsu both look good. Normally I'd say definitely go for the BJJ, but if the Judo instructor does lean towards the realism street fighting, then that makes it a lot more difficult to decide. A long time in advancing in ranks is probably good, too. -
Yep JoeCooke, I would really like to do that. But, I'll settle for the next best thing - visting Japan for a few months or years sometime in my lifetime.

Chain punching.

Power comes from speed and mass, so, its more of a matter of sustaining the speed to keep the hits being powerful I would imagine. -

Well, a few things you could try is to do more cardiovascular exercise, and eat less carbohydrates.
