Feigning can be useful, but if not done well can also be dangerous. Take for example a simple boxing stance, your guard is elbows resting on your body, fists guarding chin/side of head with chin tucked in. If you go to fake a jab to distract attention or their guard to get an uppercut with other hand in, there is a chance of it backfiring. While you're bringing the jabbing hand back and launching out the upper cut, the guard you have is poor and a fighter could quickly plant a punch right on your face. Just be aware of the risks like that... feigning is not always the best thing to do.

Jackspratt, that student deserves to be thrown out, good call. Anyone disrespecting an art, especially while swearing, should be barred from the club. About hitting him in the temple though, I am not sure, that might be considered assault, and a temple blow is very dangerous.

Bah, I was quite enjoying that thread Ah well, I guess we didn't want people falling out over it, so anyways how I feel about Tae Kwon Do. Even with TKD as my one and only MA, I still think that it may need crosstraining to be really effective in a real life crisis, however I also believe that it is a lot down to how the person fights... if they use a few techniques and experiences from TKD with their fighting, I believe it can be quite effective, but if they try purely TKD then they might end up injured. I, however, do Shadow boxing which I do very much lots of so it almost counts as doing basic boxing, but a lot of combos and visualising. All I am trying to say that TKD is a good martial art, all of them are, but its application is more of an art than a down to earth fighting style, however a lot depends on the school. There are some more realistic/down to earth arts, such as BJJ, but TKD also has its up points, especially when combined with a grappling art

"Tell me and I will forget, show me and I may remember; Involve me and I will understand." There goes that weird Sod's law or whatever... I read that above my french teacher's door the other day heh At our dojang, we have a relaxed atmosphere but we also have discipline and respect. Whenever our instructor is teaching or demonstrating, we listen but afterwards when we practice new techniques on each other, we are allowed to talk in moderation then... we have a relaxed atmosphere but also we have great respect for instructor, black belts, senior grades, and each other, which I believe are a basis to train from

Dbzhub, hey there... I'm also 14, and I'd like to say that getting involved in the Martial arts is great for your health. If you didn't start getting involved, think about yourself... you'd continue to get out of shape, which may lead to depression etc. But if you start Karate or any other martial art with fitness training you will become fitter and stronger... just do it!

Various Workout questions, not really Martial Arty :P
Jack replied to Jack's topic in Health and Fitness
Thanks guys! This is all very helpful... I was always naturally weaker than everyone else and even after working out I was, I kind of see what you mean now I really need to push myself hard, thanks again -
heh, thanks, I think I'll impress my instructor with that knowledge

OK, so I have a few questions here if ya wouldn't mind answering them. 1) What are crunches? 2) How do I develope the lower two of a six pack well? 3) Does running use all of the leg muscles or just a few? Would running be suitable exercise for all of leg? 4) With situps, I do like 15 minutes without much ache or improve over the next few days, yet the other day in TKD when someone stood on my feet and held my knees, I did just 25 situps and felt the ache for the next few days... is there anyway of replicating this? OK well there the questions are, answer any you can please

Being the newbie to workouts and martial arts that I am, I must ask... what excactly are crunches? Are they simply tensing the muscles?

Well, I shall now go into more details My daily routine will tend to be as follows Warmup 5 minutes solid Starjumps (Cardiovascular and leg work) 5 Minute of curls (biceps) 5 minutes of overhead lifts (triceps) 5 Minutes of bench presses (chest) 15 Minutes of situps - quite possibly strongest part of my body. 5 more minutes of Starjumps or burpees 5 minutes stretching and cool down Well, thats about it, but sometimes if I don't feel up to it I may do nothing but stretching or burpees, or somedays I might do 10 minutes on each type of method of weights.. On Sundays, however, I tend to do the following... Warmup Starjumps 10 minutes curls 10 minutes overhead 10 minutes bench presses 50 pushups Technique practice 200 punches after each other 100 various kicks one after another 15 minutes situps Starjumps Stretching Well, thats about it... quite a lot of the time if I am feeling down I will lessen the workout... tonight I have my Taekwon-Do lesson (just one a week!) and don't feel much like working out so I might just go do some Burpees and Starjumps Peace
-
Well Angus mate, I can't do much due to school but I tend to do whatever I can when I can, with a solid 2 hour workout on sunday's
-
Angus, I couldn't agree more... the Kiai used when punching or kicking is a way of realesing energy, and when angry controlling htem and using them through these shouts improves damage speed etc.
-
hehe ah yes all that details... Well I live in England and the name of the club I train in is called "Saracan Martial Arts" I'm doing the Palgwue (sp?) patterns atm, forgive my shortness I'm kinda tired so I might just go to bed and see y'all tomorrow heh bye

Well, I enjoy bands such as the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Feeder, Blink 182, RATM, Jurassic 5 and Incubus. Old School and old school hiphop also I like, such as Wu Tang

Man I use smilies too much

Well, my young opinion is that use what you are the best at, use what you've trained the most. For example, if you are studying Tae Kwon Do you do not want to try and grapple them to the ground... However, in self defence situations you do not want to start pulling off the fancy moves, since if you are out then it is probably dark making visiblity harder, or you are drunk in which well, you'll loose balance However, one method which works incredibly well without too much risk is a move much like a standard side kick. Standing sideways to them, you merely cross one leg back behind the other and lift the kicking leg up before thrusting it at them. My instructor used this on a Green belt who weighed 18 stones, and sent him back a fair bit too I would not bother with fancy kicks unless incredibly well trained at them, in a real life situation it is not worth the risk. And thats my 2 cents

Tae Kwon-Do Ranks
Jack replied to NicciKickx_TKD's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Well, muggins here (ie. me) has a system like this in the club I train at: White, Yellow, Green, Blue, Brown, Black Between each belt we have a "tab" of the next one, such a Yellow with Green tabs, except with White and Yellow there is no tab. I am only a Yellow Belt and have been studying for 4-5 months. -
Hey there, I don't know how long this board has been running for, but anyway I can assure you that I am the newest member, and probably the youngest too at 14. Anyway, I've been studying Tae Kwon-Do for just 4-5 months, with no training in other Martial Arts. Just wanted to say hi really, and that I'll be frequenting this here forum more often in the future ciao
