  1. Ahh, sw00t... Just as i thought, BJJ is BJJ... thanx G Angus
  2. Hey all, i have only ever studied the Machado Brazilian Jiu Jitsu system and i was just wondering if they are very different. I've read a lot about Gracie BJJ but i don't have a clue how the Machado system came about. To me BJJ is BJJ, but apparently there are differences in the styles. Gracie is supposed to be superior or something - and Rickson Gracie is supposed to be the best freestyle fighter in the world. I don't think i'm at a disadvantage for studying the Machado style, but is there any major differences between the different styles of BJJ? Angus
  3. Ahh yes, everyone would rather remain standing, but it's very hard to keep a good grappler from taking u down. Plus they (well at least i did) learn to counter things such as kicks and punches with locks and throws. Angus
  4. You can't learn martial arts from movies and books... It's as simple as that. Angus
  5. Hip flexors are commonly known as the love-handles on overweight people. The bits right on the side of the hips i do believe. GC - if u can manage to do weights as well that would be perfect, but somple non-equipment reps were what i started myself on, and all u need to do is boost the amount of reps as u get stronger. Everything should be good. Angus
  6. Hahaha, rush has a fanclub now.... Angus
  7. indeed!! If i was that well endowed it'd b party night every night...
  8. Rushman.... u've pulled both of your's at one time or another? YOU HAVE TWO!?!?!?!? luckyyy!! Angus
  9. Gees guys, get a room! Angus
  10. Martial = combative. Martial Arts = Combat Arts... It doesn't matter whether u do kata or tan jon breathing or any of that crap. Anything that teaches you to fight is a martial (ths combative) art. Angus
  11. Yeah, i guess u just have to know some ground techniques and stuff if u seriously wanna survive these days. Angus
  12. Hahha, if u keep pulling ur groin muscle u might go blind dude.... Angus
  13. I was just wondering what you guys prefer in the grappling/locking arts. I always preferred the standup stuff in BJJ because i saw more of a use for it, but i got taken by surprise by one of my mates one time and before i knew it he had taken me down and we were goin at it on the ground... Every time i tried to stand up he'd have me back down and he eventually made me submit (although i gave him a good wrestle and there were no punches thrown). Honestly i really think that if i'm on the ground that i'd be using what ground techniques i know and i'd be throwing punches and stuff. Just lookin for opinions. Angus
  14. If u r fast enough to do a snapkick to the chin then why not? The jaw is the best place to hit someone if u wanna knock them out, and a front kick with a bit of power and snap will easily do the job for you... I don't personally like the font snapkick too much but hey, if it works for u then sure, go for it. Angus
  15. oh yeah, #5 - passionate kiss is like spider-web, it leads to undoing of fly... :brow: Angus
  16. There is kata (or poomse whatever) in HapKiDo but they very rarely practice it. All we had to do was do it once and we never had to do it again. It was very pointless. HapKiDo is essentially a mix between TKD and Jiujitsu. Mine however was more like a mix of kickboxing and BJJ (because the instructor was a cross trainer). Angus
  17. 1) He who drinketh too much beer falleth down. 2) Respect women. 3) Treat everyone as your equal. 4) The best one's in my signature. Angus
  18. Ooooooh, an academic post from Angus. Well after all, i'm not JUST sex and brawling. Although i AM *the sexy*. I am in my first year of university here in Australia and i am majoring in a little thing called Sociology. Now, i've been paying attention to martial artists for years and years, and it seems to me that each and everyone's fighting style is affected by the pressures of their society, even if they do not consider it so. Take my society for example: We are very *big man who boxes* orientated and the tough guy attitude and ego is definately a way of life. We very rarely go around in cat stance doing kicks off the walls and spear hand etc. In fact, i'd bet if u put two Australian martial artists together it would look more like a common street brawl than a classy and smooth aerial display. I have also met some wushu dudes from China whose actual style of fighting is smooth and fluid, they use the trapping techniques (although i don't really have a full graps of what these are myself) and would use more waist than shoulder (whereas my society would use more shoulder than waist) when throwing punches and all that. They also have a great emphasis on the small and wiry guy who moves like greased lightning whereas it doesn't matter if you're a little flabby or something in my society, as long as u can punch and punch HARD! What do u lot reckon? Angus
  19. 'sup peepholes? I learned a fascinating technique from my wushu days that seems to have quite an effect. With a low guard and a square stance i am able to twist my hips and use all of my body power to shoot out a lightening fast side/backfist to the head... Now, this would break someone's nose if it hit properly, and the sheer F=MA (force = mass x accelleration) would put a great deal of power in it (as it uses both muscle strength and speed) but i reckon it would be more suited to *stun* an assailant and set up a lock or something... For example u give them a quick smack in the nose (thus making their eyes water) and set up an armbar or something... What do u peepholes reckon? Angus
  20. Hahahahaha, oh dear... Angus
  21. Yo 'sup people's? I think i need a little advice. I do curls (for example) in 3 sets. i want to build more muscle so my sets go in reps of 10, 8, 6... when i can eventually get to 10, 10, 10 on that weight then i add some mass to the bar. Is this effective for building muscle mass? Angus
  22. Hahaha, here we go again... I'm out of this argument. Just keep it nice please ladies. Angus
  23. "I have beaten Thai fighters using THEIR RULES" - gees, i find that funny for someone who is arguing the fact that thai boxing has not influenced much. Enough of this, guys, each to his own now - let's just leave each to his own. Angus
  24. I have no doubt that, for example, a 7 star praying mantis kungfu dude could beat a Muay Thai guy, but i don't think that's the point. Muay Thai has mastered the basics, fair and plane. I've done lots of crosstraining in various martial arts from all over the world and from what i've seen of Muay Thai they have managed to do the fundamental thing that many martial arts don't teach: MASTER THE BASICS. The Thai roundhouse has unbeatable power, not saying that the karate style doesn't hurt, just that it doesn't hurt as much as the Thai style. I'm fully willing to admit that Muay Thai has influenced my fighting style a lot. If u were going to do a NHB thing or something then the bane of Muay Thai is going to be strongest found in the grappling arts. BJJ for example, this art rocks. That's why u find a lot of MT blokes crosstraining in BJJ. I reckon that Muay Thai is the best art for the basics of martial arts. I alkso think that this argument comes up far too often. Angus
  25. Heh, u'l only hurt your legs, mine are made of steel... Angus
