I give you.... the kiss of death.... Don't mess with the godfather... Angus

Kickbuttnat... wow.. There are simply no words available in the world which can convey your beauty - perhaps if i were able to speak in the angelic tongue i would have a chance to verbally articulate a small fraction your incredible features. However, i am afraid to look at your picture again, because, as like staring at the sun - it's radiant beauty may strike me blind, and i might never see it out of the corner of my eye again. Hmmm, but to lose my sight would be considered a fair trade to be able to see that radiance directly, even if only just one more time... In short, you look great - but your modesty conveys a bashful and innocent soul. should young kids do a martial art?
Angus replied to kickbuttnat's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Yeah, i agree Rush, but we still have that problem with adults using their abilities to hurt and harm. If u find children doing that it's easier to mould them in order to stop them doing it. Kiddies are easilty manipulated, but once someone is opinionated (which is what kids get when they're 10-12+) then u have less of a chance of moulding them. That's the only problemo i can see. Any one ever heard of Zen Do Kai?
Angus replied to Liam_Sullivan's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Good on ya... zendokai's one of the only forms of 'karate' i like... Unfortunately u still have to do kata in it - but kata IS the heart of karate. Angus -

Angus replied to Liam_Sullivan's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Liam pretty much summed it up in his post up the top. It's a VERY hardcore style and it seems to try and cover every aspect of fighting, not just one. It's called zendokai KARATE but it's very different form other forms of karate i've ever seen. I have a mate who did something that he thought was similar, called Zen Chi Ryu, but i don't think it was quite a grapply as zendokai. Angus -
The Big Question: Why Do You Do Martial Arts?
Angus replied to Sutton_uk's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
To tell u the truth i really don't know any other way. I've been doing them since i was 6 and it's like breathing, i don't think i could live without it. I enjoy it, but i simply can't remember a life before martial arts. Angus -

Angus replied to kickbuttnat's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I reckon if a 3 year old was to do martial arts or something then their training should be limitted to a 'play' kinda thing where they play ball games and skipping and stuff to get their coordination and balance working better. I really don't think kids should start until they're 10, but i started when i was 6, and was doing jump-spinning crescent kicks quite well at the age of 8. I'm a freak! Angus -

Angus replied to Liam_Sullivan's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yeah, 'twas my first martial art if i remember correctly. I did it for about 2.5 years, and it was very kickboxeresque. I did an ungraded version of it under my brother. Hmm, if i ever come across a zendokai school i might join up again. Angus -
He's 13. And i still suggest taking the serious exercise slowly. You're still a *kid* so incorporate your exercise into fun stuff like a game of soccer or cricket or jumping on your girlfriend's trampoline. I found that when i tried to teach my nieces and nephews that i had to make it fun otherwise they would get bored and not do it anymore. i taught them stuff like evasion by throwing a soft ball directly at them and getting them to dodge it in they guard position. Cool stuff like that. It's fun and it works! Angus

Um.... i don't really have a BASE BASE BASE style. I've done Zendokai karate, BJJ, Freestyle Kickboxing, Goju Ryu Karate, HapKiDo, Wushu, Boxing... i think that's all. I try to base myself on the HapKiDo teachings (cos it's a pretty well rounded martial art) but i'd say i'm more of a freestyle kickboxer. I'm currently back at Brazilian Jiu Jitsu though, cos i love grappling. Angus

A punching bag is good for cardio and weight loss and all that stuff. I don't know if it really works the muscles but it helps to make your strikes stronger and better. I just like hitting the punching bag. I don't use gloves now cos i want to get the scar-tissue around my knuckles and make them harder. It bleeds like hell sometimes. Angus

Crosstraining... There is a contant argument that people who only stick to one style of martial arts are simply cheating themselves and are not serious martial artists. I wouldn't go so far as to make the statement above myself, but i do think crosstraining is a wise move when it comes to serious self-defense. Crosstraining can also be good if u r faced with multiple attackers. if u trained simply in a grappling art the chances are that if u take one guy to the ground or lock him up, the other guy is gonna smack u in the head. Conversely if u only train in a striking art and come across a better striker than u then u might be wishing that u had done some grappling. It's a bit of a vague topic but open for discussion nonetheless. Angus

Dude, i didn't know u were 13. The flab u have is probably just baby fat or something. I suggest u take the workouts VERY easy if ur only 13 cos ur body is still growing and u don't wanna cause any damage to urself. Angus

Evasion, take the spark outta their eyes...
Angus replied to Angus's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yeah, retaliation is always the way to go, but do u reckon that u copuld evade forever? Or long enough to puff the guy out? I might try that when i have a freestyle training session with one of my mates next, just get him to try and hit me while i evade (not so far as to be constantly moving away from him, but just enough for me to avoid his hits). No retaliating, just evading. Angus -
During my boxing training in particular i learned how to avoid punches quite well. By simply sidestepping, moving back, and essentially dodging the wild blows of an attacker u can take the spark out of their attack and leave them breathless. Some may even stop attacking after a few swings and take a second look at their situation. U might win a fight by doing something as simple as moving out of the way. I use evasion, rather than blocking, as my main form of defense, and by doing this the guy has to move to u as well as attcking (which spends even more energy). Quite a good tactic, what do u lot reckon? Angus

You could say that MW's are the same as circuit training but it's for people who have limitted room like this dude. If u can get a punching bag then all your worries are forever behind u but he didn't have any equipment, so i gathered. If only i'd known as much about the human body back in highschool as i do now, i would have gotten 100% on the science exam instead of 85% Angus

kickboxing for everyone?
Angus replied to twizt's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Every martial art requires you to be fit and athletic and strong, not just kickboxing. They martial arts do this to you both mentally and physically. Kickboxing's just another martial art, like karate and TKD, and it does the same job. Angus -

Fighting, a sociological perspective...
Angus replied to Angus's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yeah, even though i don't want to admit it, i've been influenced greatly by my social circumstance. I have moved away from fancy kicking and all that stuff and am trying to focus on my boxing and grappling skills. At least now if i get in a wrestle i'l be able to handle it - although the guard and mount positions look a bit weird Angus -
When i went to lose weight after a year off martial arts (i was 115kg and am now averaging 80) i started back up in a calisthenics program that i had in development before i gave the MA's away for a bit. You must always eat breakfast!!! always always always!! never miss it if u can possibly help it! Anyway, there are many things u can do: 1) Microwave warmups = run a shuttle of 20 metres/yards whatever, drop and do 10 pushups, 10 crunches or leglifts or whatever, get up and do 10 squats. Run back the 20 metres and do 9,9,9... etc. As you get stronger and fitter, increase the number of reps u do. When i stopped doing this program i could do 30, 28, 26.. down to 2. Now i just do weights and running etc. 2) Bruce Lee once described running as the master of all exercises (as is stated on this board), so go for a run. Start off slow. i don't suggest doing running for distance, just jog. Wear a stopwatch and run for 10 minutes without stopping. I know that the guys in Thailand do 45 minutes a day (amoungts their other Muay Thai training methods). 3)Skipping rope is one of the best exercises in the world too. it works cardio-vascular endurance as well as building muscle in the legs. 4) Pullups are also excellent. If u can integrate them into the microwave warmups then u will havea great alround exercise (but don't worry if u can't). 5) If you're only just starting abck up in exercise then take it easy. Do it every second day and as u start to notice more results then up the reps. Nowadays i workout everyday except for one, which i use to relax, and do nothing strenuous. Hope this helped a little dude. And remember, u r what u eat, so lay off too much of the fatty stuff. Angus

To Gi or not to Gi, that is the question.
Angus replied to thaiboxerken's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I only train with a unform when i'm told that i have to. Otherwise i'm in trackpants and a t-shirt. I train in old jeans (i always wear jeans or something that needs a belt when i go out) to simulate the street sometimes too. I make sure that when i go out i always have a belt around my waist (on my jeans of course), cos it's made of tough leather and can be used as a weapon when folded in half. I've only ever had to use a uniform for Goju Karate and HapKiDo, and now i have to use one for BJJ. I don't really like them, but if i have to use them in order to train in what i want to train then i will use them. Peace peoples, Angus
