Everyone has made some good points on this topic. But in my opinion Randy, if faced with defending himself on the street I can't see him trying take downs or anything of that nature. He would be like the rest of us on here and clear himself of the threat as quick as possible. I know if faced in a self defence situation you want to get out of dodge and fast as possible. Any cage fighter I would think is intelligent enough to know there are no rules on the street.

True but I only train because of that reason that I also enjoy it. And it takes a special breed of person to train for pure fun and knowledge.

From The previews it either be great or a total bomb. I plan on seeing it if the local theather gets it. Hoping it will be a good one though. -
Would I be out of line to ask this of instructor?
pittbullJudoka replied to SkidRow's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I would have to agree with most of the comments so far. I would politely inform the instructor of what was going on and let them handle the situation because you and your son's partners parents are both payiing customers. I hope you can get things resolved. -
In this situation you have to find a way to make the child understand they aren't going to get hurt. I find the biggest thing with trying to spar with kids they are intimidated just by size diffrence. It takes time with some children to get comfortable with sparring an adult. I think they think you are hurt them when you hit them. Also we teach kids their entire life your not suppose to hit someone then they are in a sport were it's acceptible and they are confused on what to do so they run. Also I've seen some that had the mental approach that it's sort of game of tag especially if your school does continuious sparring. This is one of the tricks I've haven't yet fully learned from my Sensei on how he can get any child no matter how they react to the thought of sparring an adult to seem fearless when sparring him or myself. Each child will vary in how you have to approach them on this subject as well. I understand your frustation in getting the kids to quite running from you.

Summer belt test

congrats on the news. Train hard stay focused. -
This is you time to help the young. Help them learn to spot open targets. Help them learn combos of their own. You strike them very little. This is the time you step up as a sempi or sensei within you school. I would also change height so they can reach target areas easier. This shouldn't be a frustrating fight for the kid as if it is it may discourge them.

pittbullJudoka replied to bushido_man96's topic in General Chat
No offense taken Throwdown. Evryone is entitled to their opion. This book what I have read so far is about his life from growing up to his learning traditional karate and becoming a fighter. But you right alot of the fighters don't have the greatest techinque in the world. -
Hurting My Sparring Partner
pittbullJudoka replied to Aces Red's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Maybe lay off the legs kicks. From what I gather from your post this only happens when you kick them in the legs. Sounds like they aren't trained to take leg kicks. Also as others said try shin pads. -
Will Karate Improve my Self Confidence ?
pittbullJudoka replied to Eager To Learn's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Sounds like your confidence levels are already coming up. -
Becoming punch drunk wouldn't be my main worry on this topic. I would worry more about being knocked out multipule times without the proper recovery time in between. If your cardio is good you'll be able to recover from being punch drunk fairly quickly without any lasting effects. But to help aviod injury to the brain you need some quality equipment. Start with a good mouth piece, quality gloves, and boxing style head gear. Learning proper defence techniques will also help in avioding punch drunk conditions. Shoulders up, jaw closed ect. I have been punch drunk numerous times and don't feel that I have suffered any perminated damage from it. Now if you get knocked out that's it for the night. I believe if you wear good gear you'll stop the effects of long term head truama. But no matter what gear you use you always run the risk of some type of long term injury in a contact sport such as martial arts.

We've always been taught to give what we get. And most importantly don't injury your training partner becuse without them you can't practice you technique. There's a time to make moderate to hard contact and I don't believe that she chose the proper time. How does she work with kyu ranking within you school?

Will Karate Improve my Self Confidence ?
pittbullJudoka replied to Eager To Learn's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I was as you are in my mind to late 20's when I again took up Martial Arts. I could tell a big diffrence in my confidense within months of getting into training. I set goals like never before and now hold myself to a high standard whether it be my training or the way I conduct myself in public. -

Chuck Liddell Iceman My fighting Life. I usally don't read much but this one I thought I just check out and it's a page turner. For me at least. I find it interesting that he's put this out for people to see where he came from and his life from childhood on. Also he tells about getting in to martail arts, kickboxing and Finally the way he found the UFC. -
Well I've done some figuring and the boss(wife) said if I bought her a new matress for our bed I could buy a good gi with some of our income tax return so it's a win win situation for me a new soft matress and a nice new gi.

judo
pittbullJudoka replied to french fri25's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
A hard throw on a soild surface such as concrete, tile or hard packed ground is going to take the wind out of the average persons sails. I have seen trained grapplers get knocked out by a good throw. So it may only take one. And for just tossing them you may not want to engage with the person for example a rowdy drunken member of you family. There's a time and reason for every move in the martial arts. -
Instructor losing their cool in sparring
pittbullJudoka replied to Slugger's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I still don't get the people who think they can practise martial arts without getting hit. That sounds obserd and she disrespectied you in her actions alone. If your contact was what the school considered excesive she should have told you to ease up or something. Her actions remind me of when my brother and I used to work together and we were discussing somethings that happened the last time we sparred. Mind you we were both sporting marks on our eyes, glove burn, and various bumps and bruises. After my brother left the break area a co worker said " You guys actually hit each other when you do karate?" I must have looked at this person like they had two heads and responded " How do you learn to fight without getting hit? You can't." I then had to leave the break area because I was in shock. I have the same reaction ever time I hear something like this. Seriously look in to finding a new place to train. -

You can end a fight with a well exicuted throw. A good Judoka can make you land how ever he/she pleases. If nothing else you make a guy tired from dragging himself up off the ground evertime you toss him on his head. -

I'd say join up even if they don't do alot of traditional ground work you will learn some very effective throws. Also you will learn how to prevent from being taken down so easily. And if you find this club to teach the entire Kodakan text you will learn everything from major outter reaps, ground work, and some self defense in the striking relm. You have absolutely nothing to loose by trying it out for awhile. -
After I get a quality gi I plan on looking into getting an embrodired belt that is something I promised myself long before I got my black belt. I just haven't gotten around to it yet as the cash flow has slowed down in the past year since my son came along.

Mixing styles
pittbullJudoka replied to yingampyang's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
You make a great point here if the style are that diffrent you should have little problem keeping them separated in you mind. That combo would be great also.
