My first instructor was tough guy. He drilled us hard he in my thought very traditional. After reaching what he considered and upper belt level he expected us to fight hard. I remember my last promotion test under him it seemed no matter what I hit him with he walked through it and hit me harder giving me an taste of what the old schoolwas like. From him I learned to stand my ground no matter how bad it looked or hurt. And break falls on the wooden floors must be why when I see the concrete floors coming at my dojo I think 'this may hurt but keep you chin tucked so you head doesn't bounce'. I wouldn't trade my experince with him for anything just wish I stuck with him longer.

Basically we use a full range of strikes with the exception of groin, throat, and directlly to the knees. We allow throws, ground work for a short time all subs are allowed. We're very careful with knees to the head and elbow strikes most of the time for obviouse reasons. Our therory is a fight will transition most of the time and we want to be confortable no matter were the fight is to take place.

Welcome to the board. It's never toolate to start in the martial arts. I started back at 25 after eight or so years of doing nothing. Do worry about how silly you look because even the best black belts and martial artist out there were not great when they started. Don't be nervious about going in and watching a class or two and ask plenty of questions. Discuss with the instructor what you are looking to do in the MAs. Even if the plkaces you've found on the internet aren't what you are looking for one of the dojo owners may point you in the right direction. Also when you get to town check out the yellow pages you may find other schools not listed on the internet. The schools not listed on the net may end up being better places to train because the use the old adage word of mouth is the best advritisement. Sorry to ramble but good luck in your search.

Congrats that's a big jump. -
When I recieved my black belt my Sensei set us into a formal setting potsition and called usup one at a time. While kneeling infront of him he gave me some advice and due respect. He then passed my belt tousand made me put it on. He continued class as normal. After the other that promoted with me were presented with their belts we shared a shot of fine whiskey that Sensei bought some time back for the day that he promoted his first black belts.

Congrats Shorikid! -
I've beeningn thinking about the situation. I think that I feel uncomfortat or undeserving with the title when I don't preform up to my expectations. Last class I was super on evenon the new drills we tried out. And helped develope a semi new entry to and old move. Tori I'm very happy and proud that my brother and I can train side by side and have almost always trained in the same place. He got me started into the martial arts years ago and then reeled me back in. He is such an outstanding martial artist and I try to based my performances off what I see him do. Then push it a little farther. He goes under my list of martial arts heroes. I am begining to think this is just oneof the mental blocks I've faced in the past two years. I think I'll find my way through it always seem too.

My instuctor has stood back and let me take a class over. This is fine and when me onstuctor referrs to me as Sensei it doesn't bother me. It's when my older brother refers to me as Sensei that I feel he shoulden't have to. I thinkit may because I feel he hastaught me so much in the pastyear and he out ranks me. Last night at it seemed it didn't bother me but last week I didn't feel deserving of it. Also I think it may be based on my preformance of the night. I had a goodnight last night and the last time we were in class together I was having an off night.

They may let her test without having the required number of classes because of the social setting with the parent of the girl. And doing this they may also hold her to the same exspectation as the rest of you that are taking the extra training. But I can understand wanting to vent without causing problems within the training hall.

I know everyone dojo and schoolare diffrent when it comes to the use of titles. I was one of the first of the students of the current dojo to be referred to as Sempi by my Sensei. This was fine I was one of the most senior students and I took on extra responsablities such as helping with the kids class and teach in my instuctors absence or helping with my fellow students when they had problems with a new technique that I pickedup on faster than they did. I just figured this was part of steps to becoming a senior member of the dojo. I put out the fact that I started helping teach kids when I was a blue belt which is a low to mid ranking student in our dojo. By the time I was a brown belt I was the one Sensei would call on if he need to miss class or be out of town this not only ment teaching the kids class or the adult class I also had the option of teaching two of his private students. I didn't mind this because it seemd every time I wasin the role of teacher I also learned something new myself. One of my best efforts was mentoring a fellow students daughter through the last phases before she tested for her brown belt. Watching her preformance during her test I honestly don't who was more proud her father or myself. As a brown belt I taught many private and regular classes, learned technique and kata before the other students in the dojo and then asked to help teach them. I have been included in decisions for testing requirements ran tests on my own and with the other black belts of the dojo. I feel honored that my Sensei has enstilled this must trust in me. In our dojo upon recieving your Shodan you are expected to be a mentor for the kids and lower ranking adult students. The teaching and mentoring others does not bother me. Being referred to as sensei was odd at first because I was a newly christened shodan. I almost welcome the title from most everyone. I by no means expect everyone in the dojo to address me in this way. But It seems when my brother who hold the rank of Nidan addresses me as Sensei that I'm not worthy or he should not address me with this title. I had often referred to him as Sensei during and after class. I noticed after the last class he attended that I could make eye contact with after class when we bowed to one another and said good class sensei. I have thought of this for awhile and wonder if I feel this way with him since he is the one responcable for me training in the martial arts or if it is the fact he has long past recieved his black belt andI just recieved mine less than a year ago. So my question to the members of the board is this. How are titles bestowed in your dojo/dojang? If you are referred to by a title what is you comfort level with it? And is there any person that you feel shouldn't have to refer to you by this title if they wish not to?

Shorikid that guy did go on to compete in the absolute portion of the tourney. And yes it's a bear to go into a competition without someone you know and trust to coach you. When your on the mat atyou need is that firmilar voice to keep you calm even if they are just talking to you. The tourney I did before the one you went to I was expecting to have a coach and when I got news they weren't coming I thought no problem but it really ended playing a mental factor when everyone I went against had one. Sandbagging is something that rubs me raw. There are people who are in complete denial that this type of thing goes on. Some find it acceptable. For example I was talking to a fellow on Sunday that said his son competed in a kick boxing match on the 12th of this month, this match was set up for young kids all the way up to ammy fighters. For the kids they went by belt and time in the martial arts and his son was entered as a white belt novice instead of a black belt advanced. His theroy was his son doesn't train kick boxing so he's a novice. No matter the child has been to every tourney within 120 milesof here for the last 2 yrs. I had to call him on this. But I don't hink it's quite as bad in the grappling realm because we grapplers like to test ourselves. I has watched the matches I've taped and been so mad after words because of the sub attempts I passed up or just didn't see. Now I want to see my standup I need a good laugh.

I feel ya on this one. But if I were you I would only worry about myself on this one. This is one of those situations that just rubs you the wrong way. Sounds like you are doing what you need to be well prepared for your test. This otherperson may feel they're ready but when it comes to show time they may not be. Just consintrate on your training because that's what will get you through. And good luck withyou test.

Sounds like you had fun. If you learned something andyou found room for improvement you won in the long run. I wish could have watchedShorikid's last match I think I could have coached him past the guy who beat him. But I too got caught in an arm bar that day and I tapped because they said in the rules meeting if it looked like it was locked or we seemed to be in trouble they'd call the match. I kick myself everytime I think about that day and the arm bar. Maybe a few more seconds and I could've worked my way out of it. But if I'm not mistaken because of that day I rarely get caught in an arm bar. Shorikid correct me if I'm wrong about getting caught with an arm bar. I may just be in denial.LOL.

Judo Wrestling BJJ
pittbullJudoka replied to Symphony-x's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I could make that decision because to be good in the grappling arts you need a blend of all three arts mentioned. Now if you find that Judo school teaches traditional Judo you'll learn throws and many of the same subs that you would in BJJ. Wrestling would teach you position and howto handle yourself in a scramble. Also wrestling teaches you how to control you opponent's hips which comes in very usefull. The take downs from wrestling come in very handy as well. Bjj is almost a blend of Judo and Wrestling without as many throws. You'll learn some of the same take downs as used in wrestling but they just won't be as fine turned. Bjj will also probably have classes were you get to shed the gi (no gi). This type of training will let you see what will work on the street were your foe will not always have a gi top of thick winter coat on. Were Judo will only use the gi and wrestling will be strictly no gi type training. -
Big Tim Sylvia leaves the UFC
pittbullJudoka replied to pittbullJudoka's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
Well Syliva has done something right in his career he has racked upa24- 4 record. 16 wins by (t)ko 2 submissions and 6 decisions. His only losses have came by 3 subs and 1 decision. The guys he's lost to were at the top of their game when they defeated him those being Mir, Alovski, Couture and Nog. The better half of his career was spent in the UFC and fighting top notch guys at the the time. He has defeated the like of Vera, Arlovski (twice), McGee, and Ricco. I personally am NOT a fan of his because as previouslystated he is a boring fighter to watch. But if he would fight to win and not to loose he would make more exciting fights. Also he has the chance to put himself in the position to be the number one fighter in the world if he beats Fedor in July.
