  1. I would like to try a cap block someday.
  2. I could set here and name techniques from multiple styles that I say would be in the perfect style. But the problems lies that would be my perfect style and maybe not anyone elses. The perfect style you could aviod fighting no matter the situation and if you did happen for be attacked you could subdue your foe without injuring them.
  3. Bushido_man that's a great one with ball of the foot round house. I applaude you. My best is attemp so far is three with a reverse punch. I've on tried breaking on about 6 times in the last 10 years. It's just something we don't do.
  4. You name not being on the list of those to promote may be as simple as he forgot to add your name when making the list. Also he may be leaving you name to test you reaction on not being on the list. He may be planning on testing you anyway kinda like a pop quiz. If I may ask how long have you been training and what is your rank? This may have something to do with not being promoted. Because in the dojo I train in from green to brown is somewhere between 6 to 8 months and from brown to black is a minimum of 1 year.
  5. You have to look at the world today to find that most of the population has went UFC mad. You get almost no respect as a martial artist in todays society if you don't train mma. I have a guy at work who wanted to train at the dojo were I am until he realized there's alot of traditional training before you jump on the mats to roll. The average person person today probably thinks of the Karate Kid compaired to a UFC fighter if you just clain you train karate or kung fu. This is my 2 cents
  6. Welcome to the board. From what you said I think we can all learn something from you. Enjoy your time here with these great group of people.
  7. Welcome aboard I think you'll enjoy it here.
  8. Tiger claw makes a shoe just for the martial artist or find some wrestling shoes.
  9. You did crack her due to going back your normal fighting routine. But what did her instructor tell her after warning you? Keep your hands up these guys fight different than we do. Also in the evening class he told her that happens when you drop your hands when face mask is legal target. Anyway I agree with you on this one. I could not see a reason an instructor flipping out like that. If he wanted to discuss the situation it should been done in a calm private session after class.
  10. I find nothing wrong with using books or videos to educate one's self in another area of the martial arts. I constantly want to improve my submissions, I will just stuff off the net or from books, or from watching a fight but I have to actually figure out the setup and application " on my own ". And by "on my own " I mean with a training partner. This is the only way you have to know if the technique is working properly. You can only learn so much from a media source without live feed back
  11. In all seriousness my have to kit includes single weave judo gi, grappling shin pads, knee brace. I think I've still got my zipploc with atheletic tap, pre wrap, a few guaze pads. Just in case. A few rash guards and wrestling shoes. I my other bag I have 2 pair sprawl shorts, rash guard, Shock Dr flex cup and comp. shorts, 2 sets of hand wraps, 2 mouth pieces, gloves, note book and a copy of Eddie Bravos Mastering the Rubber Guard. And most importantly contact lens case and saline for the occasional knocked out contact.
  12. There's alot of this story I find hard to believe. I mean anyone can grab some dvds from the net try to figure out the moves and retain only what they like. Then make a name up of you own style. I think around UFC 5 or so Kimo Leupold's training partner Jo Son did this naming it JoSon Do. I just have a hard time with this train of thought. I mean I thought of ordering myself a nice embroadered black belt for when I recieved my shodan and could not bring myself to do it because I felt like it was not the honorable thing to do, because I wasn't yet a black belt. But this is jut my 2 cents.
  13. Congrats to you and your son on you accomplisment.
  14. Best of luck you'll do fine I'm sure. Let us know the results.
  15. I think most everyone has had this problem at some point in the early days of training. I don't remember what or how I came to be able to give a good kiai during training and promotions. Give it time it will come to you.
  16. My over all goals for the year like many is to get in to shape, improve my skill as an over all martial artist, improve my stand up and ground game. Basically since I've obtained my shodan last fall I want to go back to the basics and start polishing everything one technique at a time until I'm satisfied and then start over again.
  17. At our dojo it of course goes by ranks and if there are several in the same greade it's useally who shows up and get the spot first during self warm ups. As for people standing above me that's no issue most of those guys have years of training on me. the only issue we've ever had on this is being polite and offering our pplace to another of our rank because of someone showing up for class late. I could care less who stands were as long as I'm getting to train.
  18. Bushido_man I agree there's nothing wrong with sparring with sport rules on a time to time basis. We'll do it on a rare instance at our dojo. This is mostly done for a fun to play with type thing. But sport rule sparring will teach one the importance or speed and explosiveness into a single technique or short combonation.
  19. Judo can complement bjj alot. But you should be very carefull with the fact you may learn the same technique in both arts but with completely diffrent setups, grips, ect. Also you should be learning these arts to better yourself and make you more well round not to earn a black belt.
  20. I believe one should spar in the same way you plan on defending yourself on the street with the exception of crippling strikes( groin, eyes, throat, ect). But most martial art schools spar with sport rules.
  21. I agree that this is not a good training enviroment for you or your brother. I hate to hear this is happening in any dojo. I mean pushing someone during a high grade promotion or because you have great potentail is one thing. I would also agree on making it perfectlly clear to the head instructor why I'm leaving his dojo. You may want to try talking to the instructor if you feel comfortable with this and don't think this will increase the abuse on you and your brother. But it sounds like the instructor basically doesn't care what the higher ranks do to you. Attending your martial arts class should be something you look forward too not a time of dreed. Keep us posted on you situation. Good luck with finding a school you feel comfortable training in. Train hard and be true to yourself and others.
  22. I can only agree with this style of truely finding out if your technique will really work or not. I have used this method many times.
  23. That drug is on the list of banned substances for mma fighters. I this that no matter what substance a fighter is caught using they should suffer the same fate along with the appromiate monitery fines.
