Man I feel ya there. I went through a very shooty patch right before my black belt test. I faailed to complete the most basic kata and major hesitation during self defence and sparring. It seemed I'd never pull out of this rut. I just continued to work and it past. I talked with the older black belts at the dojo about it and they said not to worry it happens to the best of us.

Big John McCarthy

As Shori mentioned the effective striking is easy to spot. I have a real problem when a fighter looses a fight when due to the judging basically going on the striking aspect of the game. If a fighter is taken down and can escape with little to no damage without the ref standing them up they nullified the takedown. Sub attempts: If a fighter is fighting off his back and throwing up sub attempt keeping his foe busy they should get the credit for aggression and ring control. Another thing I have noticed with the UFC is that if the fight stays up the fighter who moves forward the most whether they a being beat to a bloody pulp will win a match. A great example of a fighter winning a fight due to take down points Tito and Forrest. Tito largely won round one, but round two and three were all Forrest and he nullified the take downs by stuffing the shots and standing up with eas. Tito clearly won round one hands down. The judges for mma in my opinion need to be educated in all aspects of mma before judging said type of match. We'll have to wait and see what comes of this. -

I've not seen anything but he is working on a scoring system just for mma. I'm sure that in his scoring system take downs alone won't mean so much especially if you don't do anything with them or can control your opponant on the ground. Also I think he'll have something about looking at sub attempts and how busy the guy on the bottem is. Just things that the boxing scoring system can't take into consideration. His scoring ayatem could only be better than what's currently in use. -

I'm hoping for his scoring system for mma to be put into place to get rid of the current boxing scoring system that is currently being used. He will still have a big influince on mma. -

He's been teaching self defense for the LAPD since before he started working with the UFC. Also he teaches seminars on reffing and scoring mma. -
I've been following this story for the last few days to see if there is any truth to it. After tonights main event at TUF finals Big John will retire. This is yet another changing of the guard in the world of mma. For those of you who would like to check out an interview with him in which he explains his reason for retirement. Go to mmaweekly.com they have the entire stories. All I can say is fair well Big John your the best ref in mma.

I think anyone can do martial arts wegiht nor height should be and issue. I had a friend years ago when we were both still in highschool who tipped the scales around 425 pounds. He took up Shorin Ryu for a couple years, he enjpyed it and never had problems, he just made the adjustments for his size and went on. Good luck and enjoy your journey.

The Human Weapon

I've been really impressed with the show. It's much better than the Deadly arts that use to be one. Atleast the guys have to try their new found skills against a practioner of that style. -
You'll definately had to atleast get a judo top or your current gi top will be smoked in a matter of a couple throws. Plus when you start learning chokes the thicker lapel of the judo gi won't cut into your neck as bad. Plus the thicker lapel doesn't put you at the rick of colasped veins and arteries from chokes.

2nd kyu grading on saturday
pittbullJudoka replied to Zorbasan's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
Good luck with it. -
The two best methods I've come across in my training are using a makiwarri only if it'staning free from the floor. And lots of bag work. Kick the Bottom of the bags because usually this area of the bag is more compact and harder due to setting of filling material. It take time to properely condition the shins. As for the thighs try getting a partner to trade kicks with start with an impact leval that is just above tolerable and set a number of kicks to take and try this a couple times a week.

I figured there would be more tatted people on here. My tattoos include a custom native american peice on my left shoulder. A tribal phonix above my left elbow. Kanji on my left bicep for fearless. Some tribal design on my right bicep. On my right tricep I have my rendition of Fudo the Japanese God of Protection. On my left calf the pharase art of war in Japanese. On my right calf I have Bushido in Japanese. I still have more to come when I get the money.I love getting tatted.

First Belt Test
pittbullJudoka replied to h.r.ford's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
It takes time to be able to preform under the stress of a promotion with outsiders watching. Don't dwell on the test too much relax the day before if possible. On the day before run you technique a few times and don't try to change anything. Most promotions are past or failed due to confindince. Believe in yourself and your technique and you'll be fine. -

I don't get it.
pittbullJudoka replied to Basic's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Bushido man you hit the nail on the head about the TKD guys. And to answer your question about karate guys keeping their hands lows. Most dojos nowdays spar using sport tornament rules where there is no face contact allowed. So no need for them to keep their hands up when they don't get hit in the face. At the dojo were I train we stress hands up even with the kids or you're going to get hit in the face in a real fight.
