  1. Now the lock down is something I find very useful and came accually give people fits with. My wife got me a copy of the book Mastering the Rubber Guard for my birthday. For this to be a book of grappling technique is it very well laid out. I just can't afford the dvds unless someone burns a copy for me. So I make do with what I have.
  2. Bushido_man I agree 100 % on that fact. The Illigal steriod and drug use is running amuke in pro mma right now.
  3. [quote= I suppose any kind of give away is a telegraphed attack. I use to work out with a guy that could see patterns in people before certain attacks such as the squint of an eye before someone would start a hand technique or a change in your breathing patterns before you would throw a kick. But he use to be a profesional kickboxer so go figure. He tell us you gave it away you squint before you threw your hands. Crazy what you tell tell signs can be.
  4. No problem Zanshin. We all look at somethings and think that there is no way someone has done that. We like our tests to be challenging. Like Shori said each school sets their own standards for promotions.
  5. That's great! Always growing.
  6. I learned a valuable lesson about keeping count that day. Shori and the other Senseis pushed us to a new level that faithful day. I was mentally prepared to do more that my body could do physically do. I have a great group of senior black that I try to mold myself after. I espected no less than a very demanding old school test from them. And I am glad tha is was the way it was because I hear of some other black belt tests around our area and they are sub par in my opinion. I trained very hard to be one of the first students to promote to the rank of Shodan in our new dojo. That is a badge I wear with honor. And far as I'm concerned the future black belt tests will either equal or be set a level above mine. The day of my promotion the choice of quite never entered my mind, I felt if I did I not only dishorned myself, Shorikid, but most of all my Sensei. I felt the only way to stop was by knock out or a trip to the hospital. And to Bushidoman and NightOwl thank you for the kind words. Shori that's one thing I don't think I'll ever forget about my promotion. It made me appreciate what I went through one that one day to be able to say I achived the the rank of Shodan at the Makotokan Dojo.
  7. ps1 is dead on with moving the the low block through the high block. When running this kata I occasionally slap my fists on each other. As he said you angle may be off. Slow down and make sure you angles are right. Have a fellow student who knows the kata well or your Sensei watch the begining of you kata to see if thay can make some slight adjustments to the placement of you hands. I have notice this happens alot if one is trying to rush this kata. Try working this move ment in front of a mirror. This is a great help on any and all you kata because it keeps you eye level up and you can still see most all of you movements.
  8. Nick schooled Gomi with a very sweet set up during that fight too bad CAC over turned the win to a no contest due to Nick testing positive for pot after the fight.
  9. Not trying to pull anyones leg just telling what was on our Shodan test. There were alot of old school back belts over seeing this grading. These guys were putting us through things they went through and what ever the thought would make things hard on us.
  10. Just checked the guide on my dvr. They are showing two episodes tonight starting t 10 pm eastern. The first episode is listed as Philipines and the second is at 11 pm is China.
  11. I just watched the TKD episode(long live tivo). I'm not a fan of the Americanized TKD but I found this show very interesting. Bill taught everyone a very important leason. Keep your hands up. Hopefully Jasons knee will heel up ok.
  12. If throwing the kick as a lone technique you will definately telegraph your kick. Thus being why it follows your hand combination. If this kick follows the right cross as I mentioned in my post your have natural set your shoulder foward and not telegraphed your kick. As with anything in the martial arts as a beginer you will telegraph every move you make. As you practise and develope you skills you slowly eleminate your tellegraphs. I would have have to disagree with you on teaching incorrect body mechanics just a diffrence of body mechanics timing. You feet shoulders and hips all have to move with this kick. This way of preforming the kick let the body naturally unwind when it it is coiled. Everyone is going to have an opinion on what is right and wrong, what works for them and what won't. One persons body may come to certian moves easiler and more natural than another. "Judo" Gene Lebell told me a few years ago at seminar he was teaching "Not all moves work on all people and sometimes you have to modify the moves that have been taught to you. You modify the moves no matter how simple to work for your ability, body size, and body mechanics."
  13. I just learn a trick to add power and control to a round kick. From a squre stance(right leg slightly back) If throwing a round kickwith you right leg it seems the hips bind and the body is off balance. To create the power that you want it seems you have to so hard the you are out of control and off balance and you have to have to a lot of swinging follow through. The hips seems to get bound up and loose power. Everyone screams hip rotation. This is a major component to power. But if you set you right shoulder into motion a split second before the hips this seems to coild and unwind the body naturally. The shoulder travling in the direction of the kick pulls the hips through the kick opposed to the hips pushing the upperbody around. thus taking the bidding out of the hips. Thus more stap and control to the kick. the way I was taught to to do this was set up from a jab cross combonation. I have found much more power in this way of throwing a round kick also you gain balance and control that always seemed to be missing.
  14. My wife bought one a few months ago for us and it puts a whole new twist on gaming. I'll have to say it's fun. But I doubt you'll have any luck finding one unless you happen to be at a store when they recieve a shippment. I work in retail and we've had a time out of the Wii. As of right now I would get one off the net somewhere you stand a better chance getting one even though it'll be late getting to you for Christmas.
  15. We've toyed with running kata from finish to start. And I'm with PS1 after about 4 to 5 moves I mess up. You guys have some good ideas I may try some of these out.
  16. Merry Christmas to everyone one one here. I'm just enjoying what I can of the holiday. Mostly looking forward to watching my son on his first Christmas. I am looking a getting some cash from my parents so I can afford that Iron Man Gi. I promised myself a year ago if I passed my black belt test I'd buy a good gi. MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!
  17. The only ma related logos I don't agree with are the "I am a Black Belt" "black Belt Club" type. These seem to be bragging to me. I often wear shirts from tournaments I've competed in, Sprawl shirts that have our dojo logo, or a Sprawl hoodie. Everyone at pur dojo has the Sprawl shirts like mine and we'll often see each other out in town with them on. We aren't advritising we're just proud of our dojo. None of us have ever had any problems while out in town. You mentioned wearing these types of logos to a "watering hole" this is someone just looking for a confrontation in my opinion. There's nothing wrong with the types of clothes if you're honest about why you're wearing them.
  18. Mostly when sparring we listen to alot of Disturbed, Gizmachi, Icepick, and some other vaarious heavy metal.
  19. Nor have I and my sensei uses the biggest part of the Shotokan kata in our dojo.
  20. Congrats!!!!!! His hard work has paid off.
  21. Most places charge about the same as their normal classes for these types of classes but I wouldn't since it's only a ma like workout with not much actual istruction as far as regular ma class. To give you a fair guess on cost I would need to know the regular dues at your dojo for a regualr ma class.
  22. Bushido again hit the nail on the head. He may also be complimenting a "good" effort put forward by the Kohi. This is something my Sensei does especially with the kids class. This may be a subject you may come to understand as you get into your Sempi's position.
  23. The single most important piece of gear in my bag is my Shock Dr. flex cup.I have actually showwn up for class and been laying my gear relized don't have it and drove back home for it. The wierdest has to be the lotion, and I have no idea why it's in my bag.
  24. In the past year or so I think as Shorikid stated there have been some that needed to go to the optional over time rounds which they refer to quite often but never use. Bisping vs. Hamil Sakuraba vs. Gracie 2 I'm sure there's more but I missed a few events this year.
