  1. My 2 cents: White Gi’s look like crap by the end of a tough work out. This is just my Master, but we wear Black Gi’s for Training, and have white gi’s for formal occasions, like Tournaments, demonstrations, rank examinations. The black gi’s just seem to hold up more, aesthetic wise.
  2. I personally think you need to be well rounded. Take Karate or Boxing or Kick boxing and learn the striker properly, and take Jui Jitsu, to ground work in, and to leanr the dirty tricks, like chokes If your a big guy, you might do better focusing on Striking, and doing a little grappling so you can handle going to the ground. If your a little guy, try to opposite. The idea Behind JKD was that every has there own style, not all style works the same for the same people. Find what works best for you, and focus on that.
  3. What would be my first move. I'm drop on elbow on the back of his head, and drop him in Guillotine hold. I had a friend who tried that on me. He saw me and a friend from MA class with some gloves on, and wanted to "box" us. He go thrashed. The guys head is down, and he is swinging, he can't see crap, use that against him! Pommal the Lamer!
  4. I agree, sounds like he is just a good fighters. Some are born with a natural talent, a feel for the fight. Did he ever say why he doesn't like a Martial Arts school? Show him some real moves, give him some hard training, he will surely be one hell of a fighter!
  5. lol, we really only need ONE thread for this topic. Yeah, we have a large number of Otaku here.
  6. Everyone has different buttons, you just have to know how to push them. I couldn't tell you how to convince her because I don't know her. You just have to give her the facts, and hope she takes the beat. Is she a togh, determind perosn, make it a challange. Is she weak and feable minded, tell her it will make her strong nad healthy. Does she love her husban, tell her it will increase his pleasure when she is in better shape. I don't know, I'm sure you can figure out something that will really light a fire under her. If Grappling is her thing, Judo might be fun. People of all ages do judo, and it is great for getting in shape. But still, a less voilicne art such as Tia CHi or Aikodo, or even Yoga, might stylle appeal to her better.
  7. I’ve read this before. It is a good article, but it seems a bit biased. You expect me to believe that they guy who is a Judoka, who isn’t used to strikes, was without any further straining, about to take blows from a boxer with metal plates in his gloves, and win? And ever with the boxer alleged Judo Training? Boxers who train and are used to getting hit in the head couldn’t take that! I prefer the Article that pits Judo against Wrestling. Look it up some time, it is much more interesting.
  8. If this guy is as thick as KaratekaAikidoist said, I dobut he will listen to anything he has to say. For Egomanics like that, a good beating will open his ears and his mind to new ideas pretty fast. Either that or is will run like a little . Either way, he shouldn't bother you any more.
  9. Yeah, get close to him, or get him on the ground. Most strikers freak out because they really haven't training on the ground. If you can't get him into a close combat grappling situation, and he can box you enough to keep you away, you are in trouble. It just depends. I'm sure we all heard the Joe Lewis quote: "If I were to meet a judo man and hit him first, I'll bury him. But if I don't and he grabs me, he'll bury me." So it all really depends on how good of a Judoka you are, and how good of a Striker he is. But generally, most fights turn into grappling matches, so yeah, Judo would be usefull.
  10. For real
  11. Next time you get a guy who does that, call him "skinny." That is one of the biggest blows to a lifters ego, calling him skinny! That will make him change his tune. "Haha, I have a 6-pack" "Yeah, but onyl because your a freak'n rail!"
  12. I tihnk a Heavybag. Never tried a wooden dummy, and a good, solid canvas bag can be a great Makiwara, with a good cardio workout at the same time. With a Makiwara, your hitting a flat post, with a Canvas bag, your hitting more of a rounded surface, more like a human body. So, if it is a Canvas heavy bag, then yes, I'd pick that over the other 2.
  13. That is a hard one, because while some schools are better for fitness, a lot of it is a presonal preferrance. If this was me, and I was in as bad a shape as you say then I might lose imterest in the art because it is boring, or maybe, on top of not liking it, it is to hard. You'd be surprised at how must you will pull thru if you like the art. An Aerobic Kick Boxing class might be good. Have you considered Judo? Some people like Judo, and it is similer to JuiJutsi, and people of all ages enjoy it. What about going back to Juijitsu? I'm sure, once you're in the Dojo for a few weeks, you will catch on fast, take up where you left off. You may wish to start at a lower rank will you get the hang of it. Aikido and Tia Chi are good, low contact arts, that people who are weaker seem to enjoy, when not looking for a way to defend themselves. You may also want to look into Yoga. I was looking into Yoga a little while back to help with my powerlifting. I never took it, but it seems like is would be a good art, get you some musclar balance and endurance, while toning and firming. There are different style, so be sure to check online and with your teacher, to see which style is the teachers teaches. Some styles, like some styles of martial arts, are a waste of time, and many of those Yogi's only go to a week-end camp. Not really many "leagues" or groups that regulate fake yoga. Hey, martial arts have plenty of Leagues, and we still get Ryu's and Kwan's! Just take a look around, see what is best for you, and what you think you would enjoy.

    Style principles

Isshinryu is my Karate style. We focus on close combat, mainly for self defense. We use mostly snapping kicks and strikes, and, of course, the classic Vertical fist. We also do mostly low kicks.
  15. Depends on the Art. Jujitsu is a hard art, but unless you get put into a choke, blacking out will probably not happen. Karate can be pretty rough to, in the right class. If you take Kick Boxing and Boxing, the real thing, not some fitness no contact class, you might get KOed , in the right league. I think one of those arts sounds like your kind of style, Muay Thai or Boxing or some kind.
  16. You are going to have to try it all, and see what you like best, bro. I wouldn't advice "maxing out" 2 times aweek. I wouldn't even suggest it 2 times a month! Maybe 2 times a year. You can go heavy, but you don't need to max out that often. Maxing out is only used to set weights for a program, see your progress, and boost your ego.
  17. Yeah, the dry, solid boards are a factor. Bones are made to bend a little, give a littlee, with the force. But muscler power has its place, still. How old is that girl? She looks more then just 7 years old to me.
  18. Yeah, the person who told you bones are 40 times stronger is a physics major. Physics and Physiology are to different things. Bones are hollow, and filled with soft tissue. If bones where stronger, then no one would ever break their hands on them. Infact, you wouldn't nead to use any technique if your bones are the strong, we could just rum our forearms into it. because our bones are so much stronger. This site talks about technique, the only time it talks about strength not mattering is when the creak pot PhD starts talking. Notice when they said “Breaking an object is a good way to practice concentration, power, focus, speed and precision on non-living objects” What do you think give us “power, focus, speed and precision”? Our muscle do all that. The direct our body and accelerate our elbows, fist, and legs toward the wood. This page can’t make up its mind on anything. Is it physics or power?
  19. I'm just wondering, what questions? And who did you ask?
  20. Facts? Really? Prove it. Find me ONE 7 year old who can break a brick, then set someones leg up between 2 bricks, and see if he can break that. These arn't facts. Facts are proven things. Find me a kid how was broke bricks, and has tried and can't break legsthe same way, then we will talk. ANd I'd liek to at least see a few pictures.
  21. Yeah, overtraining the upperbody, and not getting the lower nearly enough. It is ok to train 6 days a week, just not the SAME muscle groups. I would suggest no powerlifting work outs unless your going to enter a APF meet or something. It can really cause damage to your body, and it get you unbalanced, they work your Trap, ofr example, but you hardly touch your lats. I've never meet a lift to be damaged during a meet. Most of the pains come from training. THe bench can really #$*@ up your shoulder hen doing it to much, as in in a powerlifting program. If you want mass, I'd find a Wrestling program, full-body, 3 days a week. That will put some meet on your bones and some hair on your chest
  22. Facts? What facts? Better yet, what Theory? What in the name of all that is holy are you talking about? I've never seen or heard of a 7-year-old breaker, but if one could break a brick, he could break a leg.
  23. 3500 is a fine number. Anym ore then that, it can go to waste, unless you're on some kind of anabolics.
  24. technique has its place in breaking, as it does in fighting, lifting, as may other aspects of life, but without strength, and chi/ki for those that beleive in it, you arn't going to do much breaking. And yes, a break breaker could break a human leg. I think you don't understand how fragel the human body truly is, it would be easier to break a leg them a brick.
  25. No one said it wasn't. He said some people will confuse Karate with Witchcraft, not that isn't a Religion. I don't see why you would have a problem with it. He never what is was to begin with, he only said what a small group of people he doesn't even agree with think Karate is related to Witchcraft. No one is criticizing your religion. Stop looking for injustice where there is none.
