Most of the time, you add a small amount of weight every work out, or every 2 work outs. As a new lifter, you will go by faster. A good rule of thumb is for the first 2 years, you should grow your most, then after that, you body is used to the lifting ,and most gains are hard fought. Yeah, that sounds good for a beginning program. I’m sorry, bro, I just woke up, and that last bit just didn’t register. Can you rephrase?

Sounds like a good diet plan. I love eting yogert, complete protein, carb, Yogert and milk are naturally well balanced! I glad it is working for you, keep us informed!
-
That is good. Be carefull with the Deadlifts when maxing improper from, even a little wrong, could hurt you. I know is sounds strange coming from a powerlifter, but a who is more qualified to advise on throwing, a Karateka or a Judoka? If it gets to much for you, go to squats. And good luck increasing in strength, we all start somewhere!

1. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes! Weight lifting will really help you. All the football training will, specially if you decide to get into Judo or Jujitsu later. 2. Not at first, may work an hour or 2 after school. Now, DURING the season, at my high school, the team trained till around 7 or so. In that case, you might want to take a break from karate. You might, as a rule, think about it this way: If football practice goes over into Karate Practice, they don’t worry about Karate. Your Sensei should understand, it is only for a few months, and it can only make your stronger. Unless you get injured, of course…

How to recognize a McDojo?
Tibby replied to Anzie's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
I think the 2 best ways to find out: 1. Ask him for a list of requirements for black belts. Some schools just require you to know a few moves, other require things like board breaking, times mile runs, and things of that nature on top of that. I know a school that require 20 hour survive training! Your drops off in a National Fortess with no shoes and no tools for about 20 hours! You know they are not handing out black belts! 2. Ask them what Ryu/Kwan they are a part of. Most of the posers will not even know what you are talking about. Butterfly- you forgot to add the complementary Asian mysticism to hide that fact that you don’t know JACK! lol -
Partially due to that fact that most body builder HATE cardio, lol. But also, when you are bulking up, you really don’t need to worry about being cut. The reason Body Builders say the restrain from losing fat so they can focus all their energy in the weight room, on bulking up. Most of the time, it is just easier. A simple work out, simple diet, the hard stuff come later in the pre-contest phase, when you are entering the weight room twice a day, running your legs off, and eating a very strict diet! In bulking up, you just want to get big, and focus everything on getting big! You can eat more carbs during your bulking up period, which is also important, because you will have to majorly cut back in the cutting phase. On top of that, there is a well trusted theory that cardio cuts down on strength and size, and that is the whoel goal of a bulking up phase, power and mass. So if the theory holds true, then doing cardio can be counter productive. Again, it is just a theory, but why risk it, if you are a Body Builder! It is fine for Martial Arts, of course. Remimber, Body BUilder are in it to get a big and cut as possable, you just want to get lean and musclar and strong and flexable! As for Matt Furey, if his rock-solid muscle is any indication, he knows a thing or 2 about working out and dieting. I’ve never had a chance to get his books, but he clearly knows what he is talking about from the little I read about him. Can you give me some more details on his diet plan?

Yeah, your right, if all you want is toning, and you train hard, nothing wrong with the Blowflex, or the soloflex, or the crossbow.

Aamorn- Glad I could help tommarker- thank, I appreciate that.
-
Yea, an inch or 2 shorter, a pounds or 2 heavier, but mostly the same. I hear you, bro!

Yeah, if you want to know what your max is , MAX OUT! lol, take each exercise in your workout routine, put as much weight as you think you can do, and lift it. Keep don’t up or down till you get the highest weight you can do in GOOD form, and that is your One rep Max(1RM) for that lift. That is the trail and error you were talking about. Have a good minute or 2 rest between each trail, till you feel rested. Since you are new to lifting, it may take a few minutes for you feel FULLY rested, so just weight till you feel ready to lift. Don’t do that in the work out, of course, you want to push it in the workout. Low weights is normally 50% of your 1RM. High weights, or weight near you max, is about 80% of your 1RM. Hope this answers you question. Tell if it doesn’t, and I’ll specify what I meant.

I used to have a bowflex. It got me some good tone, but that was time. No much in the way of strength. Amen! No truer words have been spoken about Resistance Training.

Has anyone heard of the Danoshen Ryu of Jujitsu? What information can you give me on it? Do you have any good sites for it?
-
Yes, my father has. He walks all the time. He walks 5 miles every day, on the days he can. As a medical Professional, I think eh would know if it was unsound. Go head and walk, but remember, your going to have to walk MORE then if you jogged.

Incompatitbility of Budo and Christianity?
Tibby replied to hobbitbob's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think people get confused, more then anything. I live in the Buckle of the bible belt, Texas. And to make things worst, it is easy Texas. When my Master opened up the Dojo 15 years ago, he would come every day to find papers plastering the door, telling him he is going to hell! Since then, he has become so active in the community, they back off. Do people just don’t understand. Zen Buddhist practice Jiujutsu, Jiujutsu men do not practice Zen Buddhist. They say meditation and burning incense and thing of that nature are ungodly, but they clearly don’t read their bibles. It is mostly a misunderstanding on the part of the Christians. I speak as a Charismatic Catholic, so I know about people who are ignorant of your beliefs, and shun it! -
They are a waste of time and money. No Body Builder used them like the Commercial says. Real Strength Athletes make jokes about gear like that! We have one at my gym, for one reason, My gym is a Hospital gym that is used by the physical therapy patents, they use total gym for rehabilitation. Save your money for a gym membership, bro, that is my advice. Nothing can replace iron. I’ve “play with it” at the gym, just to see if it is any good. The only thing it is good for, when I’m training someone who can’t get pull ups in good form, I have them use that at the highest incline till they get stronger.

Yeah, eat a balance diet, healthy carbs, like fruit, veggies, wheat products etc, and protien. Protein can make you fat, too you know. If you want to lose weight, start training hard. Get you ass to track 3 times a week (atleast) and maybe weight lift a little. Diet is only part of it. Start training that fat away!

best of the best

I liked it. It wasn't GREAT, but it was good. They should ahve spent les time talking, more time fighting! Never saw the Sequals, but most Martial Arts movies have bad sequals. I mean, look at American Ninja, watching all 5 of those in a row is proof enough to upset Darwin! It just get exponentially worse! -
We spent 10 minutes after class drinking water and talking about our work-out plans for the next week, when the dojo will be open, things like that, and I have a bottle of water that has been a hunk of ice of the pass few night waiting for me in the car for the ride home, which lasts about 5 minutes. But the time I get home, and take a fast shower, I am cooled off pretty much.

After a great, balls-to-the-wall, sweat drenched session in the Dojo, what do you eat/drink? Me, I have a tall glass of chocolate milk. Milk has the right mix of protein and carbs, and the sugar in the chocolate start the release of insulin, and the caffeine in the chocolate acts as a minor pain killer. What about you guys?

I have 2 questions. First being, I an in a Jiujutsu class ,and a lot of the guys in the class go to Judo and Jiujutsu Tournaments. I’m also a weightlifter, I’ve been lifting longer then I’ve been in Martial Arts. I am wondering, for grappling and throwing uses in Judo and Jiujutsu tournaments, what kind of weightlifting program do you guys use? And when do you spend it in the gym? When do you work out so the weakness from the gym will not interfere with your training time? That is a problem I’ve had. I go the “official” classes Monday and Thursday, but we get together at the Ryu as a few more times a week to spar. When should I lift so that is will not interfere with the Sparring and drilling? Second question is, what sites do you guys have that can tell me about Judo tournaments in my area when there a coming? I live a few hours East of Dallas, Texas, and a few hours near the boards of Louisiana, Arkansans, and Oklahoma. I can make it to Tournements in these areas.

Weakness/nausea in first classes. Should I go slow ?
Tibby replied to goedikey's topic in Health and Fitness
If you are out of shape and over weight, it is no wonder you are having trouble! Start running. That Karate Master will whip you into shape, too, but for the time being, you might want to run as well, to get your body ready for class! -
lol, those are close to my stats! Same weight and height. Anyways, keep us informed on how it goes!

I’d advise checking out the book “Body RX” by Dr. Scott Connelly. He tells you all about your diet, weight training, and things of that nature. GREAT book. Weights are great as well. As he said, there are 2 types of muscle fibers, Slow twitch and fast twitch, Both are VERY important to a Martial Artist. Fast twitch, of course, produce the speed you need, but Slow Twitch gives you the power you need. If you kick a guy extremely fast, but have no strength behind it, we will laugh and throw you to the ground. In the weight room, move the weight at a pretty medium pass, not to fast, not to slow, this should hit both muscle fibers. You can “tone” your muscles, it is a scientific fact. Tone referrers to how many muscle fibers are contracting at any giving time. I’m sure you seen a guy that lifts weights, touched his forearms, and they are hard and tight, and he isn’t even flexing! He has really good toned. You can burn fat and build muscle at the same time. Body Builder do it all the time pre-contest. See, your fat is burned as energy for your muscle, that is all fat really is, stored energy. It does have other uses (It protects the organs, keeps you warm) but the fat layer on the outside of your body, right under you skin, that is for energy. The more muscle you have, the easier it will be to lose this fat. Lift weights to build up the muscle, the do some Cardio, running, sparring, swimming, biking, etc, to lose the fat. Eat right. Body RX will show you how. It will explain a lot of these things to you. I’d suggest picking up a copy if you want to drop that extra pounds. It is on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0425186075/qid=1054922287/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-3516162-5632655?v=glance&s=books Hope this helps, Chris

Weakness/nausea in first classes. Should I go slow ?
Tibby replied to goedikey's topic in Health and Fitness
These guy have given great advice, but I want to add to it. Try eating some carbs, a few bananas would be good, before you go to class. Carbohydrates=energy and sometimes it is lack of energy that makes you feel this way. Yeah, if you are not sweating, you are not in a real martial arts class, it is a fighting sport, you need to be strong. Maybe you should start running on the days you are not doing Karate, just to get uses to more exercise. But ,I’d really try the carbs, it a lot of it is diet, see that you drink and eat right! An hour before next class, drink water and eat a few banana’s, see how that helps. -
You misunderstand. Me and my gang and the gym HATE the know-nothing trainers who just got the job for money. I’m not saying you should just become a PT even if you don’t know anything. I’m against it, but it happens. I’m been in a NPC contest or 2, and I’ve been in powerlifting for 2 year, plus I’ve been lifting for 5 year, ever sense I started boxing. My Bookcase has shelves just for my training book, training for Body Building, powerlifting, and all kind of sports, and weight loss, and on top of it, the gym I train at is run by a Physical Therapist who makes sure we are doing things right. I think I know a thing or 2 about training. The point is, It would take me countless hours to fill my head with the information in the ACSM that will never need, hours I could be… I don’t know, TRAINING! Why not just take the ACE test, which I can ace (pardon the really bad pun), and train people right? The question in this thread was : So I replied to his question. He asked which of us where trainers, and were we got certified, and I told him. I don’t think we should have trainers who know nothing, but they happen. If you see a guy who is swollen like a gorilla, with washboard abs, and you see a guy who is 50 lbs over weight, and can’t lift the bar, who do you think is going to be the better trainer? We don’t know what is in the mind, so we have only one way to judge, looking at there body. We don’t know which black belts use them are rank and which are using them to hold there pants up, so we are going to have see them fight to know for sure. A Martial Artist fights, a Personal Trainer lift weights and does cardio. The Proof is in the pudding.
