Kamal Shalorus
Groinstrike replied to Liver Punch's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I think his downfall was throwing all those wild hooks. Although, it was quite fun to watch. Of the fights that i have seen, it seems like his number one objective is to entertain. And the average ufc loves to see wild bombs being thrown. -

Hated to see shalorus lose. Among the many highlights of our trip there was getting to meet this guy. Incredibly nice and accomadatting. Good luck to him in the future. -
showing dangeous martial arts moves to friends
Groinstrike replied to hiddendragon98's topic in Karate
It should also be noted that the man that was killed was an mma "fighter" as well as a violent criminal. Back to the topic at hand, be careful who you teach. If they are a friend, show them basic stuff that will either make them bored and if they begin to practice the boring stuff it is probably worth teaching them. Are school has refused to teach multiple people based on the fact that they may reflect poorly on our school. -
Hi all, Injured my back playing golf(not training of course!!!) and was wanting to know if anyone had any good ideas for relieving pain from the sciatic nerve? I have never had back issues before, which is why i am being such a baby about it. I can't imagine having chronic back issues, hopefully this doesn't turn into one.

We just can't find a happy medium can we. Every high school kid that asks me if i train MMA makes me launch into a speach about how we practice "combative self defense principles".

Combative martial arts should be designed to win, not to "defend" yourself. I word combat means fighting where death is the reward for losing, life the reward for winning. We find this attitude mainly in military systems and ranks for good reason. But if you find yourself in a situation where you are thinking "fight" but the other guy is thinking "combat", you are in a heap of trouble. Yes if you are in a fight, you should do everthing possible to win. "Winning" means that you walk away unharmed, or atleast can walk away. If this can be done by shooting a double, holding the guy down until backup arrives, great. If this can only be possible by resorting to deadly, overwhelming force and brutality, so be it.

Where did Martial Arts originate from?
Groinstrike replied to Dobbersky's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
One could also argue that the first neanderthal to pick up a bone, or use their hands to threaten, intimidate, strike or kill, another neanderthal would be the first instance of martial arts. If we are talking about an organized system, one again, probably Greek pankaration or something from sumeria. -

As far as documented accounts of martial arts i would say Greek Pankration You could also argue that Cain was the first person to use martial arts. -

Nick Diaz MMA Fighter?
Groinstrike replied to scohen.mma's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
First of all let me say that i enjoy watching Nick and Nate fight. Nick has lacked a certain professionalism when he fights and when he puts substances in his body that get him dq'd. Nate seems to have a little better head on his shoulders but probably doesn't have as much raw talent as nick. Also we must remember that this is entertainment, someone has to play the heel. -

You're right, they take a class, learn a bunch of stuff in the classroom, and then make their first jump. Of course, that jump has them attached to an instructor and is at low altitude. Sparring that hard that early is like going to skydiving school, and on the first day they tell you to pack your own chute, strap an oxygen mask to you, and tell you to perform HALO jump. They didnt give me a class (I feel ripped off!) just a quick briefing while putting the gear on... Then i ate watermelons after my feet were back on the ground. Seriously though - I agree, going all out from the get-go is not going to be totally productive (but then again, it has its place in some contexts - thats another discussion though). My point was more skewed at "if one wants to become proficient in sparring, then the best bet is to do sparring". We tend to spar with our newer students fairly early in the process, however we rarely if ever let these students spar each other. We pair newer students with black belts or higher ranks that can control the action and keep things from getting out of hand. IMHO having two white belts spar each other without adequate protective gear is asking for a bunch of trouble.

BJJ Ranks
Groinstrike replied to Ueshirokarate's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I think this sort of thing is pretty common in many BJJ schools. According to tallgeese, sometimes you will be thrown a stripe or even a full rank when your instructor thinks your ready. In this way, rankings can be seen a more informal than with other systems. That being said you better be able to back up your rank on the mat. -

The scorched earth policy is the last refuge of the beaten man, If im going to hell, i ain't going alone. I wonder how many people would have a different opinion if I said, that you would "get away" with your act of vengeance??? I'm guessing none, as those who have answered have cited principles as reason. I am starting to think i have a seriously flawed moral compass.

Nice Find Zaine! Couple things there, yes a good understanding to ground fighting could have when a long way for the karateka. There was a point he has full double underhooks and does nothing with it. Also, I love how a fight between a karateka and a wing chun man ends up this a guy in side control hitting the other guy with hammer fists.

I dont agree with letting people without a decent amount of training spar "100%". As Masterpain said, injuries hurt you, and they hurt your training partners. I believe that you should train a hard as you can without risking injury. That doesn't mean taking it easy on each other. But if your going to slug it out, put on some gear.
