Getting all Philosophical: "Chasing the Dragon"
Groinstrike replied to Liver Punch's topic in General Chat
First of all, i feel your pain, at least to a degree. While i feel technically more proficient than i was in August of 2010, i was certainly in better cardio condition back then. Reading that definately has me motivated to start pushing the cardio conditioning to a new level. The problem is that i am not a self motivated person, i need people around to to push me and to test myself against. What upsets me is that Masterpain and myself cannot get a dedicated group of students who will show up 3-4 days a week. When we do get our young people into the dojo i am much more motivated to do insane cardio circuits, snorkle training etc. Why this is i am not really sure about, i think its because it keeps myself and masterpain focused on teaching and therefore more focused in general. That being said i enjoyed to post, and think that if you would expound on your ideas in an article it would go nicely with the article that i plan to author later in the year. -
New trailer for the second half of season two! Looks like bussiness is about to pick up. http://www.amctv.com/the-walking-dead/videos/on-air-trailer-the-walking-dead-is-back

I think the problem in saying "This isn't Karate" because a certain system that claims to be karate doesn't do kata. They may be some of the most proficient karatekas in the world, but because they don't practice a large amount of kata then by definition they are not karate? The problem that we as human beings get into is that we love to label things. We look at a system and we say that is karate or that is Kempo or Krav Maga etc. I come from a system where we try to limit labeling styles as a way to make sure that just because technique comes from a system that we don't practice, we can still see the value in that technique. Karate is a fighting art, so is kung fu, so is western boxing, so is combat handgunning, bayonet fighting etc. I think the quicker that we label ourselves as a "karateka" and nothing else we limit our growth as a martial artist. That being said i have not problem with people that only wish to practice on art or discipline, that is there choice. The problem comes when they tell people that there art is misnamed because of the techniques they practice or the principles they teach. Karate and non karate fighting arts still have the same goal in the end, to win the fight and to stay alive.

Black Belt promotionals
Groinstrike replied to Nidankid23's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
Our black belt tests are an all day affair. During Liverpunch's test last summer we started off the day shoveling and entire trailer full of pea-gravel, followed by an obsticle course that included tire throwing, rope climbing, sledge-hammer swinging, sand bag hauling etc. We then report to the dojo for cardio-centric drills, breakfalls, rolls, iron shirt drills, questions based on our systems philosiphy and finally the black belt testee is subjected to 60 minutes of continueous sparring, puking is expected and encouraged. -
Exactly one week until the next episode of season two of "The Walking Dead"!!!! Im loading my shotgun.

Everyone is going to look at things differently. If one wants to find a system of fighting thats what they will find. If someone wants to find something else, they to will find it. People have different reasons for practicing martial arts, have i found camaraderie and family through martial arts? yes i have, was it my initial goal? No, i wanted to learn how to defend myself. To each his own, Karate means different things to different people.

What is ZMA??? -
Great question, My answer would be not necissarily. From personal experience, a good number of the black belts that have come out of Bujin Bugei Jutsu have tested there skills in some sort of sporting arena. That includes MMA, IBJJF tournaments, Full contact karate tournaments etc. They have all been met with a good deal of success and many trophies and medals to go along with it. This is not the purpose of our art however, I have known great martial artists and great teachers of martial arts that have never fought in a cage, or grappled in a tournament. These instructors are still capable of delivering information in a way that their students reveive the most benefit from their instruction. These men have never "competed" but i have sparred with them and it is not a pleasent experience. So no, one does not have to be an accomplished fighter to be a great martial artist or a great teacher.

I find this is also a good way to keep people from taking themselves to seriously, which is something i hate!!!!. Our group, even senseis, are notorious for making outlandish Bruce Lee like noises while kicking the crap out of each other. Also i know of a at least a couple instances where someone has quoted an entire movie scene while he was in a heated grappling match. On the same token we must get serious on occasion as well. Sometimes you need to put on your Kill-face and get serious about training and learning how to defend yourself from deadly circumstances.

Absoulutely, is it odd that i think discipline can only be attained through savage beatings?????

I had a long conversation tonight with an orange belt of ours about ego. He is a senior in highschool and one of his friends is also in our system as a white belt. He gets frustrated when his friend goes to school and brags about what he did at class last night. I explained to him that he is a very humble person and his friend has quite a bit more of an ego than he does. I also explained to him that ego is something that will get one into trouble in life sooner or later. I may be ego that will not allow you to walk away from a fight that may turn into a jail stay, or worse. Its ego that doesn't allow you to tap out and in turn get your arm destroyed in the cage. It is ego that a human characteristic that can be as destructive as greed and avarice. This particular student(the white belt) has not had the easiest life and i think looks for acceptance in certain places where he shouldn't, but i plan on having a long talk with him about ego and how it can affect the choices that you make that can change your life.

First of all, this sounds like a blast, where do i sign up!!! Second of all, i wouldn't let it bother you, you invited her to your dojo. Maybe you should talk with here and explain that you meant no discrespect. That being said it would certainly erk me if someone who i didn't know, and was new to the dojo tried to teach me how to fight, but this doesn't seem like the case in your situation. On the same token, if someone who i have trained with and knows my game, sees something that i can improve on im all ears. The same could be said for someone who is a known and respected teacher or coach. Im not going to get upset if Dan Gable critiques my double leg.

Lion's Den Fighter in Knife Fight
Groinstrike replied to tallgeese's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Good on Mezger, im suprised he didn't try to foot lock the attacker All kidding aside, even when things turn out ok like in this instance, there is rarely a situation where the defender does everything perfect, luckily no one was injured more severely. And yes i agree that if i knock someone out and can't escape, its propably a good idea to make sure they wake up in something very very painful. -
Warhammer is becoming on of the most overused words in the Bujin lexicon. LOL Ranges definately get complicated when we have a difference in body type, and they get really complicated or really simple(depending which side your on) when i have a M1A1 at 500 yards
-
I was vaguely familier with this idea that anything outside of your grappling range is a "free movement area". It is an interesting take on the idea of combat ranges and in my opinion definately shows a grappling bias. For sure something you should think about when dealing with control tactics, if a guy can't move freely, he can't hurt you.

I have a feeling she will be showing up in the last couple episodes of the season, hopefully.
-
I think that sometime in the next few episodes they will be forced to leave the farm, and yes i to am hoping for full on roaming hordes of zombies to get that done. I think that this season will end with either the resolution of the shane storyline or the group stumbling upon on of the later locations from the graphic novels.

Only 3 more weeks until new episodes start on Febuary 12th. What are some of your big questions for the second half of season 2???? I am really curious to see how the Shane/Dale dynamic will play out, seems like a definate powder keg situation.
