  1. Congrats to all the winners I am humbled to have won and hope to keep adding to the discussions for quite some time.
  2. I didn't start until i was 22, ive been in four years and still run into things that i have trouble with, it is a never ending process. Don't fight upstream, let the journey take you where it will.
  3. 12/14 45 minute circuit with snorkel Squats abs heavy bag weighted shadow boxing shoulders jump rope air-dyne bike
  4. Snarkyness aside, i agree with Liverpunch. That being said i do not condone every joe blow who owns a gun to be riding around like Charles Bronson being a vigilante. Hurling yourself needlessly into a dangerous situation is dumb, i think we can all agree on that, but it you have the means and the ability to control a situation and keep it from escelating to something worse, whether that means using a firearm or just using words i agree that we as martial artists and fellow human beings have a moral obligation to do so. Evil is created with good men are indifferent.
  5. 12/13 Pummeling grappling 50% mma Worked on students timing and trying to get him to throw combinations
  6. Agreed, studies have shown that a person needs at least 21 feet to draw a pistol against a rushing attacker with knife. Any thing closer than this and even if you draw your weapon and hit your target this victory will most likely be pyrric. If someone is on you that quickly you better be prepared to expel your attacker and get to your weapon or get away. Edit: As far as estimating how i would respond in that specific situation, to me it doesn't matter that the assailant is female, she has a knife therefore in my mind all bets are off. I will be responding with brutal crushing force until the attacker is subdued.
  7. 12/12 60 min circuit including jumprope shoulders abs bag work ground bag work Squats lunges and a round of freesparring at the end All excepts the freesparring where done wearing nose plugs and snorkels
  8. Yes they are, thats why the title of the next episode has me confused.
  9. At the age of 5 i would say that your current program is fine, as he gets older he can decide what he wants from the martial arts. It certainly sounds like a "mcdojo" is that students are tested on a schedule and the camo belt thing makes me leary for some reason. Just be realistic with his progress and trust your gut. I would say that the most important thing is to not let him gain false confidence that he can defend himself. This is my biggest problem with pre-teen black belts.
  10. Just saw on IMDB that the 8th episode this season is entitled "Nebraska", it will be airing sometime in Febuary. I wonder what the meaning is behind the title of this episode?
  11. 12/8 Made new student escape side control 15-20 times with varying pressure. Worked gator roll/D'arce series 20 min freeroll attempted to flow with knife drills instead of my usual crash, rip, stab combo
  12. Named after an incredibly usefull combative technique.
  13. What type of apocolypse are we talking about Matrix or Terminator ? Also, kudos on the Kent Brockman reference LP.
  14. I did not click on the link because i think i have seen this picture before and i don't care to see it again. As a person who has had their pinky toe turned at a 90 degree angle, i can say either wear wrestling shoes or tape your mats together.
  15. I think these two points sum it up completely. In law enforcement, there's a knowledge that every second of a conflict will be scrutinized. Someone will assess every moment and weigh all the variables to ensure that you didn't mess up. In non-law enforcement, there is sometimes an almost unspoken one-way street that doesn't allow the amount of force to be reduced based on the actions of the attacker at that moment. It's the idea that if does "A" I can do "B, C, and D to defend myself. And then if he does "X", I can apply Y and Z. It almost becomes a matter of bringing "bigger weapons" to the fight until it's over. I don't think we always verbalize that if at some point he stops trying to kill you (particularly if you're controlling the situation) that you might want to stop trying preemptively kill him. I'm not claiming that combative arts are producing plagues of people looking to increase their force to the maximum level in any altercation that arises. Rather, from time to time, instead of carving up our training partner with a rubber knife that they attacked us with a moment before, perhaps we might control their actions and give them a talking-to. I think in drills we visualize the other person as a terminator who's only objective is to kill, and won't stop until we crush them in an industrial press. Once control is gained over them, we could downgrade their status to "moron who is no longer a serious threat and would be best dealt with by people with handcuffs." Edit: And yeah - the sound of my voice is horrible. Tallgeese taking a crutch away from someone off camera and then walking around with it doing rifle drills out of pure habit was much funnier than anyone can imagine. Luckily it's on tape. Good discussion here, and kudos on the terminator reference. As a potential LEO I have been going over scenerio's in my head and what i have found is that i am going to need a certain level of reprogramming, which i am sure i will get at PTI. Due to the background of our system(USBBA, PM, MH) we get conditioned to up the ante any time you are attacked.(which isn't necessarily a bad thing) The problem with that is as an LEO, you can't break somebody's arm after you have them in a nice controlled positioin face down on the ground. The LEO will have more tools as his or her disposal ie. Handcuffs, pepper spray, guns, and most importantly backup. The random person on the street may be alone, unarmed, and outnumbered. So i guess you could say that my biggest fear is using to much force out of fear, and as a LEO this cannot happen. edit: I to hate the sound of my own voice when it is on tape, and seeing tallgeese clearing corners using a crutch as a rifle while intermentintly asking liverpunch and myself about the combative philosophy of our system was priceless.
  16. 12/7 Light warmup Light sparring Knife defense/disarms
  17. 12/6 worked D'arce defense and escape gator roll to side control to north south to shoulder crank 90 minute freeroll
  18. Good analogy, I also enjoy Liverpunch's pink panther suggestion.
  19. Is he one of Lloyd Irvin's students????
  20. You wouldn't believe the amount of people that complained when they raised the price of a monthly membership from $20 to $30. This being at the same gym that tallgeese referred to, cost of living here is very low and we sometimes forget what other people have to pay for what we take for granted.
  21. I just learned that the book "Ring of Fire" a book about the life of pro-wrestler/murderer Chris Benoit is in production. Being an old school wrestling fan i am really on the fence about whether i want to see this movie or not. Chris Benoit the wrestler was one of the most entertaining workers in the business, Chris Benoit the person obviously had mental and physical problems that make it hard for me to enjoy his in ring work. I hope the movie focuses on the cannibalistic nature of the pro-wrestling business and how it contributed to he ultimate horrific downfall.
  22. Welcome to the thread!!!
  23. I agree with masterpain, if he or she had exhausted all other avenues of deescalation and escape, then good on the student.
  24. I find Judo techniques very difficult to learn without intense reps and a large amount of oversight with instruction. May be difficult to do by yourself or even with a small group.
