  1. 2/21 Focus Mitt drills Knife Drills Gun Drills
  2. I would say that the episode tonight was really two episodes in one. The first half hour was all action, some of the most gruesome scenes yet to be shown. The second half dealt more with the Rick/Shane/Lori love triangle, this episodes ending really fortold of the fallout between rick and shane it seems to be very forbodding for the future of the group.
  3. I will never be accused of being a feminist but it seems like there is a serious lack of strong female characters in this show. The only female character that has shown any brains is Maggie, herschels daughter. Lori is crying about how here son is becoming"cold" when he said that Rick did the right thing in putting down sofia, and then for some reason decides to go after Rick ALONE!!!!!. First of she shouldn't have been going any where!!!, he hadn't been gone that long. As for Andrea, she is starting to come around but the crap she pulled almost killing Daryl along with shooting over the heads of the rest of the group makes it hard to think that she will all of the sudden become queen of the zombies.
  4. Episode 9 entitled "Triggerfinger" is on tonight, should be interesting to see how Rick, Glenn, and Herschel get our of the tavern and to see if Lori remembered her triple A card. Any predictions for tonights episode???
  5. 2/16 warmup drills kempo strikes up and down the floor wristlock drills followed by takedowns 20 min sparring
  6. I disagree. Adrenaline can over power the bulk of the pain from a strike to the testicles, in which case all you've managed to do is anger the attacker even more and make them more determined to attack you. A better thing would be to go for the throat. Im sure that there is some truth to this, however it greatly depends on the individual. I have seen countless mma fighters, who are very well conditioned athletes who are used to getting him, fold up like an accordian due to one well placed, all be it unintentional low blow. That being sad, eyes and throat are both great targets if you absolutely must escape from a situation.
  7. Bummer about the knee GS. I don't know how it went down but one thing to be VERY careful of with the De La Riva is the angle at which you are to your partner. When you're working it, you should cut the angle to the outside. So, once set up, you should be looking more at the side aspect of the knee than the front of the knee. I've found this to be way more friendly to the my own knees. Especially since mine are not as young as they once were. You now its funny, the more i grapple the more i find it necessary to quite trying all this fancy stuff and try to sure up fundamental positions and postures. Certain guards tend to require more dexterity than i have at the current time and end up causing mild to severe discomfort. Working on fundamentals, what a concept.
  8. I call this the drunken friend defense, if you are at a friendly gathering, and one of your buds gets out of control and for some reason tackles you, this can keep them from hurting you or themselves for long enough that your other friends can pull him off.
  9. Im going to try to call Doc and Walk later today to see if they might make an appearence friday. Tim will not be present as he is taking Bert on a romantic weekend retreat to Evansville Indiana of all places. I ran into adrian the other day and shamed him to coming back up to the gym, he came up monday and has gotten soft playing music and hanging out with groupies all day. So far the head count for the beatfest is Me, Bill, You, Bryan, Possibly Spaceman, and possibly some of our young people in need of guidance, and maybe adrian.
  10. How is the staph doing?? Will you be ready to go for friday??? I am hoping to be somewhat healed up by then as i jacked my knee all up tuesday at the gym.

  13. Unfortunately our system only has about 15-20 members, and only 10-12 black belts. It would be sort of neat to start up a forum for our system, maybe tallgeese can get on that. The great thing imo about our system is that every single person that has achieved shodan has a different style of fighting and self defense. We encourage cross-training and finding the techniques that allow you to be succesful based on your attributes.
  14. OK!!!!, So episode 8 season 2 entitled "Nebraska" Solid episode to start of second half of the season. The ending was awesome, really like how they set up the face off between rick and team philly. Edit: For any others wondering, the song playing at the end of the episode is entitled "The Regulator" by the band Clutch, which is a very underrated band. Hearing that song made me want to start sharpening my machete.
  15. Only 4 hours until the new episode!!!!!
  16. I think what this boils down to is an argument about which flavor of ice cream is better, chocolate or vanilla. Are they different, yes, but at the end of the day they are still ice cream. I think that when most people think of kata, they don't think of BJJ drills. Thinking of BJJ drills as a form of kata is fine, but one must understand that this is not what most people think of as kata. The title of this thread is asking us if Karate is capable of existing without kata. If we define kata as any drill used to increase skill and technique in a martial art, then the answer must be no. But in that case, could any martial art exist without "kata". On another note, if we define kata as a drill to increase a person martial skill, could we not then say that sparring is nothing more than a drill(albeit a less restricted one) and by that logic a kata?? Maybe im over generalizing here but if we use that logic couldn't we then just lump Freesparring or grappling as just another form of kata??
  17. Something tells me that if I show up to a "traditional martial arts tournament" and enter into the Kata portion of that tournament, the judging panel would disagree. Royce Gracie himself bowing to the judges, pulling guard on an imaginary opponent, transitioning into a triangle, then an armbar, then sweeping the imaginary opponent, passing his guard, mounting him and choking him out with an arm triangle would result in Royce being beaten in the kata competition by a bunch of 12 year old TKD practitioners. The mental picture i get from this is incredibly amusing.
  18. 2/9 Saulo leg warmup Squats Burbies Pushups Rounds kicks and Side kicks on air shields 1-inch punch practice to encourage relaxation while striking. Grappling with groin as a target.
  19. Yup thats enough to make me want to go shower right this second. As a school teacher who is around these walking petri dishes everyday i can consider myself lucky that i haven't been sick for than i have. Yes, coming to class sick proves nothing except that your a inconsiderate person. Respect your training partners.
  20. Great post, we were discussing this topic last night instead of working out . I get into the habit of constantly pushing forward on someone who is backing up, trying to herd them into a corner. Thinking that constant beating will help them change their habits. This may be true but it is also important to let the person learn how to fight moving forward. Sometimes its hard for me to remember that under 5 years ago i was on my bicycle getting punched and kneed in the head. Eventually people get tired of taking punishment and either start to work on their bad habits, or they become discouraged and quit. In order to foster an environment were you can build clientele(sp?) and maintain a acceptable number of students for training, one must learn to change students bad habits before they become ingrained.
