  4. We also have a picture of a seriously disgruntled samurai in the background.
  5. Then I guess I'm about to lose all of your respect with what I'm about to say...How strong is your loyalty to your Sensei/Dojo/Association??? If my Dai-Soke had been CONVICTED of a crime involving moral turpitude, most, but not all...I'd walk away from him and never speak of him ever again, and I love him more than any man I've ever loved, even more than my dad!! Some I will never associate myself with no matter what!! If i gain or lose respect for anyone based on what they post on the internet, i need to get a life.
  6. Is it possible to kill with one blow, of course. What i disagree with is using this as a training modality. If you are training to end the fight with one blow, you may be mentally unready or unable to follow up with repeated strikes if they are necessary. You fight how you train, and if you are training to throw one strike, thats what you will do under stress.
  7. We can discuss hypotheticals all day, but the real question seems to be this...How strong is your loyalty to your Sensei/Dojo/Association??? As for me I have a heck of a lot more loyalty to my instructor than i do to most people in my life. Is he a demigod in my eyes, no. Has he made mistakes in life, yes. That being said, he is a good man with a good moral compass. But if he were to make a mistake such as this i am confident that unless he betrayed another member of our association, we would forgive and try to carry on. We have had at least one person in our association who betrayed another member. He betrayed his teacher of 20+years, He is no longer spoken of.
  8. Nah, i just did some research on a few techniques that my brain could process.
  9. 5/23 Side mount escapes Foot pick from de la riva 2x4 choke clock choke 60 minute freeroll
  10. And this is a discussion we had with our students last week actually. Bunkai work involved a lot of neck wringing, throws that would land someone on their head etc. When we finished with the physical side of it, I told them they had to "go through the list" of things they might have to do. Put a thumb in a person's eye? Not that hard an act physically, but emotional and psychologically it's a whole different deal. If they can't envision it, live with the thought every day of having done the act, they needed to take it off the list. Go all the way through to ending a life. Include your own death as a possibility, of having all those things you think you could or couldn't do, done to you in return. Psychological preparation for violence is as, if not more, important than the physical preparation. It wasn't about the macho, bad butt imagery either, but about survival and being the one to go home to your family at night. A man with thousands of techniques and decades of training isn't nearly as dangerous as a deliberate and determined man with a handful of techniques and a year of hard work behind him. As far as the whole thumb in the eye thing, its definately something to think about, but is more difficult that many people think against a non-compliant uke. A person definately wants to have positional dominance before expecting a technique like this to work.
  11. Thats not a bad idea. Im not sure if Sensei has a general idea of when a BB test will be happening. Regardless i need to be getting my butt in shape. There is a reason Alex started BJJ after he was a cop for a while. Ive been trying to grapple more to make the transition less jarring. Side Note: We really should try to get Theobald down here sometime.
  12. Agreed, if running isn't an initial option, take a hostage. If the "gang" continues to advance, leave the hostage in a quivering mass inbetween yourself and the gang. This should atleast buy you some time. If you choose this tactic however, expect to be arrested.
  13. Due to developments in the last few months i know find myself on the verge of possibly starting a career in law enforcement. Due to this i have found myself in somewhat of a dilemma with my martial arts training. For the last 4.5 years i have been trained in a highly combative system that has its roots in Kempo jiujitsu, goju-ryu, jeet kun do, krav maga and many other arts both grappling based and striking based. While training i often find myself using more force than a police officer would be allowed to use. For example, redirecting a knife and plunging it into an assailants midsection may land you in a heap of trouble, especially if you are a public servant such as a cop. So my question is this, what would be the best ways to reprogram oneself who has a tendency while training to use "overkill" when dispatching an assailant to, to use less forcefull techniques that would be less frowned upon by a law enforcement agency.
  14. I'll second this, and I think that toughness in this context is really just a "manly" way of saying discipline. Contact martial arts, from technique to conditioning, is just a big exercise in discipline. Being disciplined enough to learn the technique is step one. Being disciplined enough to get your body into really good shape might be step two. The final step is being and learning how to be disciplined enough to apply that technique through conditioning. A lot of guys look good on the pads, bags, and shadowboxing - and a lot of guys can take a big shot and keep going. The goal of sparring with more realistic contact, is to reach the stage when getting hit results in legitimate technique and intelligent counters as opposed to angry hay-makers. A group of civilian competitive target shooters can out-shoot most military platoons, but which one would you rather walk into a war zone with? Good points, I will throw myself into the category of the people who after they get rocked with a punch, resort to looping punches and white hot rage. Which i suppose is better than turning away from the threat and conceding the fight.
  15. If its contact your looking for and you can't find it in a karate setting, there is nothing wrong with crosstraining muay thai, boxing, or mma.
  16. IMHO a certain level of contact is necessary to ready oneself for maintaining a level of proficiency in a fight or combative situation. Its important to learn how to deal with getting blasted in the jaw or the liver and then learning fight through while not letting it happen again. That doesn't mean letting yourself get brain damage. it means being safe, were protective gear, but allowing yourself to get beat up occasionally will instill a mindset that no matter what comes your way in a fight you can deal with it and implement your will in the fight. I would see no problem with going to a full contact dojo, just make sure that they aren't needlessly clubbing each other in the head. Make sure that it is done in a safe, responsible manner.
  17. What you must understand about the show is that the fighters are put into a very unusual enviroment. They must be ready to fight at a moments notice, so they are most likely coming into the show as they would a week before a fight. I would assume that training sessions are kept reasonably light with a lot of technical work and plyos so that the chance that a fighter will be injured in greatly reduced. EDIT: Also, wasn't this the season the Mickey Burnett ran his head into the wall of the house and injured himself????
  18. 5/17 2 mile run Focus mitt drills 4 rounds sparring focusing on boxing, dirty boxing , and clinch fighting Knife attack and defend drills Gun deployment and verbal command drills.
  19. When a person poses a serious threat of personal harm or injury to yourself or loved ones. That is the line, plain and simple. Regardless what Master Ken says, just because someone shoves you that does not give you the legal right to rearrange their face. If someone tries to punch you, the waters get a little murky. Can you leave the situation??? Is the person some drunk swinging hooks outside of a bar, or a calculated person trying to viciously assault you???
  20. Next time we get together i definately want to work som weapon retention from grappling positions, seems like pretty valuable stuff. 5/16 Light warmup 45 minute freeroll.
