The scorched earth policy is the last refuge of the beaten man, If im going to hell, i ain't going alone. I wonder how many people would have a different opinion if I said, that you would "get away" with your act of vengeance???
-
Redundancy is good , is good if the techniques that seem so overlap are effective. I agree with Justice that having just a few techniques from reference points, and practicing the heck out of them can be very beneficial. When doing attack and defend we find ourselves going to the same 3 or 4 things in different variations. Thats because they work!!
-
Revenge for a honest mistake or accident, no. Revenge for purposfully taking your livelyhood, family, loved ones for their own personall gain or because they are an evil person, maybe. Im not saying that revenge is a good thing, "When you go looking for revenge, don't forget to dig two graves" and all that stuff. Yes i agree with Sensei8 and Masterpain that 99.999 percent of the time you should abide by the law and let our legal system carry on the way it is designed. But, what if that person is wrongfully acquitted??? Can anyone tell i rooted for the Sith????
-
But in all seriousness, i think every person needs to atleast have an idea where his or her line lies, so as to be careful in not crossing it.

Its hard to say exactly how you would react in a certain situation until it actually happens. The fact is, we live in a society of order and laws. Take those laws away, like in the ZA for example, we find ourselves in situations where the previous rules dont apply. In the ZA if your are stealing my water, or chickens, or squatting on my land, you die.

I agree with masterpain that it would obviously have to be something extreme. It would have to be something that has robbed me of the ability to have a productive, happy life.

Rediscovering trapping range.
Groinstrike replied to Groinstrike's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think that trapping as a "range" certainly does exist as the "in-fighting" range. This is the range were elbows, knees and headbutts come in handy. It is tough to headbutt somebody from kicking range.(unless you are E. Honda) Yes, you may have to use other tools to get the fight to this range, but once there, the combatant who is the aggressor wants to keep it here. Headbutts, knees and elbows are better "fight enders" than punches and kicks IMHO, therefore i believe that if a combatant is proficient in establishing the fight in this range, he or she has a distinct advantage. I can see both sides of the coin you two are flipping here, and how it makes sense to each of you. I think tallgeese posted something up a while back in regards to "ranges" in combat, and how some of the thoughts to some have shifted in regards to the ideas behind ranges. That being said, I think the crux is the actual trapping, as opposed to the range it occurs in. I've done some trapping in Combat Hapkido, and transferred it over to some DT very nicely in some spots. I think what's important is not trap for the sake of trapping, but to do so with intent to follow up or gain an advantage of some sort. Just because you can trap, doesn't always mean you should trap. Well Said. -
Ok so first off let me apologize for the darkness of this particular topic, but it think it is important to discuss certain matters. I would also like to apologize in advance if this is the wrong forum for such matters, i would argue that matters of revenge and retribution are often central to martial activities. After a workout last night sensei told us a particularly disturbing story about a man who was sentenced to 7 years in a turkish prison because he was unknowingly used as a drug mule by a good "friend" of his. Long story short this guy gets our after 3 years, attempts to sue the guy who set him up, wins but isn't able to collect any money from the person. Masterpain and myself both mentioned how it would be very difficult not to kill or at least maim the person who sent us to hell for three years. So my question to the forum is this. Not counting self defense situations, to want extent would a person have to wrong you before you would consider bringing upon that person serious violence with malicious intent.

1 Have you ever trained with a different style of martial arts? 2 Have you ever trained in another country? 3 Have you ever trained outdoors? 4 Have you ever trained so hard you couldn't stand? 5 Have you ever had dreams about training? 6 Have you ever been knocked unconscious during training? 7 Have you ever intentionally lost a fight? 8 Have you ever run from a fight? 9 Have you ever cried during training? 10 Have you ever saved your own life with martial arts? 11 Have you ever saved another person's? 1. Are style is pretty mixed so yes, all the time. 2. No, would like to go to thailand, japan, and especially Brazil. 3. Every Thursday 4. Yes, Belt tests seem to have that effect on me. 5. Not so much about training, lots of dreams about fighting and combat however. 6. At least twice that i can remember 7. No, to lose a fight on the street can mean death, and to let someone win in the dojo, i believe is not respecting them. 8. No 9. No 10. Executed a few breakfalls that came in handy, maybe saved myself some broken bones. 11. I had i Aiki a friend of mine out of a bar before he got in a fight with about 4 bikers. So it could have got really ugly.

Rediscovering trapping range.
Groinstrike replied to Groinstrike's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yes, but that change of range is an integral part of the application of the technique itself. One does not separate a punch into "the part where you extend your arm" and "the part where your fist connects". The movement and the technique are not separate. We do not, like some sort of tank, move, then stop in place and shoot our technique out. Our technique is an extension of movement, it is a form of movement, and it is used to conform with a set of openings and opportunities that have come available at that moment. If you throw, say, a hook punch, it will be reflected in your feet. It is not a matter of moving your feet, stopping, and then finishing the punch; your feet shift and turn as your punch launches as an integrated part of your system of delivering the strike. If the target was close, that movement will retreat slightly, if further it will advance slightly, and this was not done in isolation from the strike itself. I don't disagree one bit, the ability to control the range in a fight is incredibly important. The reason i am becoming partial to trapping range is the ability to deploy weapons that will allow you to end a fight in the quickest and most effiecient way possible. -

Eeeh. I've done it a couple times using cruz, it's not that big a deal. It's all in opportunity and available energy vectors. Both people should be able to adjust and negotiate ranges on the fly to use the tools they want using their tactics, movement, and the tactics of their opponent.I understand the constant flow of changing ranges, but atleast for a split second, you or your opponent must get close enough for the weapon to reach the target. One does not simply stand on the outside and land a headbutt. The range must change. -

If we really want to get nit picky the earliest weapon and still the most used weapon is the human mind. But existentialism aside, yes it was a rock or a stick.

I work in a school setting is which carrying a "weapon" will get your fired or expelled or if your a student. At any given time i have a stapler, scissors, computer monitors, chairs, hundreds of pens, pencils. In the art room i have access to exacto knives. There are broom handles, baseball bats, paper cutters. And thats not even counting the auto trade shop.

Basics of Chi
Groinstrike replied to vantheman's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Zaine makes good points. I myself to not believe in "chi". What i do believe is the ability to condition your body through rigourous training and conditioning. As per the TS's question about making strikes more powerful. Relaxed muscles move faster than tensed muscles. Speed equals power. There is no mystical force behind it, IMHO. -
Over the past few weeks i have found myself becoming more engrossed with trapping range. I suggest that all martial artist that are concerned with combative effectiveness study the teachings of Dan Inosanto, Paul Vunak and Bruce Lee. Here are a few videos concerning fighting out of trapping range. One is Guru Inosanto discusing pak sao entries and the other is some very old footage of Bruce Lee practicing wing chun in 1960. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJNUP9HsZAc&feature=related
