  1. I was first made aware of the OODA loop by tallgeese a few years back. The concept was developed by Air Force Colonel John Boyd. OODA stands for Observe, Orient, Decide, Act and is one of the more applicable theories on the physchology of real life combat. I was wondering if tallgeese could explain this theory slightly more in depth as my limited knowledge on the subject would not do it justice and would be the most beneficial to those of us on the forum. Thanks. Groinstrike
  2. I was told this fable by Masterpain shortly after i began martial arts in 2007. I seems that this story is the basis for many martial arts sayings, "Be Like Water" for example is just a way of saying to "let go". To fully express oneself you must have an empty mind. Whether it be Boxing, Grappling, Kata, Sparring, Golf, Basketball, Ice skating, water polo, Shooting, or Basketweaving. We are at are best when we let go of the conscious mind. For example, Masterpain competed in mma competitions a few years back, during one of his fights he executed beautiful techniques en route to a rear naked choke victory. Afterwards he admitted to having no clue how he had one the fight. He physically could not remember the fight. This would be an example of letting the unconcsious mind take over and letting yourself go. Since Masterpain is far to modest to brag on himself. i thought i would do it for him.
  3. A big part of not getting fatigued while sparring is knowing when to rest and when to relax. Finding a place to grab a clinch for a few seconds, grab a few breaths and evaluate the situation. However, it can be difficult when outclassed by an opponent who is constantly coming forward. I suggest pre-emptive measures such as working cardio with a cardio or some other device that restricts oxygen.
  4. 9/7 Takedown drills Judo Drills Wristlock drills 20min freeroll Still trying to shake off the headache from yesterday after being fustigated.
  5. That was somewhat incoherent. Should I call you a doctor? Nah, just kidding. Did have a rather vicious headache, good to see that youre still capable of cracking skulls and you haven't regressed into peace, love and Jits ala Tallgeese.

  13. Personally, i come from a system where kata has fallen by the wayside. I believe that the reason for this is that we have decided that extensive grappling training is more combatively viable than large amounts of kata. This is not to say that kata is a negative thing, i believe that it has its place, escpecially for conditioning purposes. However, i believe there is not substitute for moderate to hard sparring to get the feeling of having real pressure put upon you. I may fall into the category that makes me a "numpty", but when training for real life situations that are dynamic, not static, imho there is no substitute for sparring and spontaneus attack and defend with a non-compliant Uke.
  14. Sorry, im from the states, what is a numpty????
  15. Did you get to roll with Kendrick any? No i didn't, rolled with jake though, who is a total moose.

  20. My first formal test was for 3rd Kyu, i had done MMA training but had never formally tested for a rank in our combative system. I worked my tail off trying to memorize all concepts of our system. I got the tar beat out of me(which is common for all testees) luckily i passed with only minor head trauma.
  21. Underhooks, Underhooks, underhooks, they work for a reason.
  22. 8/24 Animal drills 60 minute freeroll trying to work spider guard more, top game still needs work
  23. I like the idea of MA in the school curriculum, to bad it will never happen due to laws and parents. I also agree about martial arts in the olympics, we have Judo and TKD but unfortunatly they have been severly watered down for sport. In 2016 the summer games are in Rio, and there has been some talk about a trial run for BJJ in the summer games.
  24. 8/23 Warmup stick defense light stick sparring Green and Purple belt angle drills
  25. I would change the role of the Uke, more experienced martial artists should be practicing against a non compliant Uke more often. There is nothing more disconcerting than getting punched in the face while trying to wristlock someone.
