  1. firstly, the ground and on your back is the last place you want to be in any situation... it may help to learn but there is so so so many topics that are specifically talking about this very thing... let me say again, there is nothing wrong with BJJ.. I like it.. It is very effective... but it seems like its the "cool" thing to do nowadays...
  2. Personally, I am sick of it.. honestly.. BJJ this or wrestling that?? since when was it cool to wrestle on your back?? I hated that part of my Judo training... dont believe me? look in the "grappling" part of this forum.. there are tons and tons of topics over BJJ!! not that its a bad MA, its a good one....just my opinion. but can we please talk about something else for once..??
  3. I know I see that in every single TKD tournament...
  4. I understand why you stated this. At times, it can be appropriate. However, it is also an indication of letting your ego dictate how people act towards you, and at times, you don't want to involve your ego. yeah, I try to leave that out of it as much as possible...
  5. the only time I would aim for a Kyusho point is when an attacker is standing in front of me telling me he wants to fight, I would make sure I would get the first punch while he is not moving...
  6. yeah, its a really bad spot, I wouldnt really be worried about being thrown back to the ground.. it would be the pounding I would get while he has a hold of my leg...
  7. Personally I wouldnt Kiai... as for the eye thing, wow... but I wouldnt hit'em with a car...
  8. What makes it valuable for self-defense is for when you get into the situation where you get taken down, or clinched. If you don't know what to do when you are there, then you can end up in a world of hurt. well, that also.. I can do pretty good in the clinch, but not so much on the ground..
  9. This, I wouldn't have a problem with. Let them think what they want. I don't care what they think. However, if it continues, then you need to act in some way, I think. Sometimes just getting chest to chest with them, and showing them that they may have to fight you, might be enough for them to try and save face and walk away. If not, then it may be time to take your shot. the reason why I said that is because it would show the bullies that he is scared so they will CONTINUE to bully him and his brother... you should never let the bully know that your scared.. regardless of what they think of you.
  10. Also, I think that Grappling is a great for self defense but I wouldnt try to put yourself that close to your opponent unless your really really good at grappling or throwing..
  11. I would say I have more power than speed.. 50% of my training is reaction time training.. the other half is Rep after Rep of technique.. I like the round house, especially the ones from Muay Thai
  12. that just sounds painful!
  13. Also, you put your self at risk on trying to talk your way out of a fight, I am not saying to fight but trying to talk your way out of a fight shows the enemy that your scared, so scared that you dont want to fight them..
  14. yes I agree, you need to stand up to them.. talking and all that jazz, works but most of the time it doesnt work.. really, it doesnt.. you just might have to stand up to them, that sounds kind of the wrong thing to do but sometimes you dont have a choice in the matter.. standing up to a bully works over talking to them pretty much 80 percent of the time.. cause I used to be one when I was in high school, I SOOOO regret it, but thats another story.. also, it sounds like they have been doing this for a while and now they KNOW your scared and will continue to do it.. intimidation works as well, you have to show them that your not going to put up with it.. its time to be mean, it is kinda making me mad just thinking about them picking on you. Good luck mate. I wish I could come down there, we could take'em
  15. sounds like you have had your fair share of encounters.. You are pretty lucky on the whole "not Freezing" up thing or being scared in general to fight.. I think it kinda comes down on how you did in your child hood about fights and all that.. cause I was the same way as well.. but I can honestly say that I dont regret it all cause it has really prepared me for today..
  16. I know this has probably been asked many times, but our opinions have probably change as well.. so I will ask, what is some good techniques to take down a much larger opponent than you, I am not talking about just height, but weight as well.. I was thinking that a kick to the kneecaps was probably good, but I have also heard that you have to be pretty accurate to land a good one..? I dont want to go into small technicalities, just the techniques that would be effective in your opinion.. what have you used? or what would you use to take them down?
  17. Wow...that was interesting... but funny... I am not totally sure if he was actually serious yet??
  18. Yeah, but it serves a good purpose in training. it does. we did it today, it seems like the roundhouse ( Muay Thai style ) brings him down almost everytime, the guy who wore it today weighed like 200 lbs..
  19. hitting kyusho points can shut down the Central Nervous System.. that wont just "stall" them.. even though it could be hard to hit in a combat situation.. I dont rely entirely on it.. but I dont think that it is a complete waste of time..
  20. Perhaps this explains the tendency to kick like you did. After 15 years of this, I would say that this would be the more likely response, especially if you have not done Judo for this long. yeah thats true.. we have been doing a lots of kicks in self defense situations and they seem to work better than the hands at times..
  21. Actually Judo would be a TMA right? Kodokan has been around for a long long time..
  22. my dad did Kyokushin for about 15 years and he taught me as a kid, all the way up till about 18 when I signed up for Judo.. he didnt teach me any of the katas.. just repetition after repetition of kicks and punches and blocks..
  23. work on their sides... like when he throws a punch with his right hand you block or move to the left around his punch cause now you can work him at this angle, he will have a harder time coming square with you doing that.. personally, I love sparring with tall people!
  24. Hehe, at the training classes I attended last week, I jokingly offered to don the "Redman." They would love me to do that! LOL!! it can get pretty exciting..
