You never heard of Mario Sperry? Mario Sperry, was elite bjj'er promoted by Carlson Gracie Sr to black belt. He and Maruilo Bustamante had a following out with Carlson and took with them, Vitor Belfort, Wallid Ishmail as well as Ricardo Arona (current fighter people are rooting for to go against vandereli in the pride grand prix) They formed a Team headed by Mario and Marurilo called Brazilian Top Team (BTT) One of the biggest Power house teams in Mixed Martial Arts. Mario sperry's DVD's are pretty good and technical but because of his brazilian accent and lanugage barriar problems he doesn't come off as intelligent in the dvd's. His moves he shows is pretty solid though. Roy Harris recieved his black belt from Joe Moreira, Roy Harris Produced and made the DVD's BJJ 101 very technical goes in detail and explains the techniques very well, and sets up the education and learning process on how to develop your game quicker and learn the techniques quicker. Very educational, and good BJJ instructional. -

actually it has turned into that sort of disccussion. To answer the question is Aikido grappling art? Yes since most if not all of its primary defense and attacks are of using some sort of grabbing/locking techniques. -

who's your instructor in arizona? I know Silva, and chuck's back ground, but they aren't grapplers. Because there primary fighting style is striking, as why they use the take down defense and go to stirking. Either point its how you train the take down defense/ and sub defense. -

I know I was just giving you a hard time. Some one teach you the x-guard or you teach your self by watching marcelo garcia tapes then practicing the move? -

cuz the way you word it comes off he can get any sub, he has to work for a sub meaning the white belt with 1 year experience can defend a few of his subs. way you wrote is the blue belt can put a clinic on the 1 year white belt and get any sub he wants. Maybe but I bet white belt defends alot or at least soem of the subs. depends how the practice. Its about resistance training. All they got to do is bring in a good bjj/grappler and they work on sprawling, take down defense, sub defense and getting back to tehre feet to play striking game. There is quite a few schools who do that. Even though wandereli silva from chute box Pride's number one guy write now. Thats his game, he has a great striking and great take down defense, granted he studies bjj also. Now I understand if you casually pratice take down defense and sub defense half heartedly just going through the motions with really no resitance. Then yeah it won't pull them off with some one who is experienced at grappling through resitance. -

Your wrong on that account. He may not defend every sub attempt from blue belt but he can give him a hard time and make him work a for a sub. Meaning some arm bars, key locks, leg locks, and some chokes he can because decent at defending but get caught in some rear naked chokes done on there own. Thats why you learn combinations more around blue belt stage and you get caught because of the set ups. I agree and I stated in several post you need resistance. Doesnt have to be 100% all the time? No! You can learn more by doing a move a few reps then have a partner give you medium amount of resistance something for you to deal with and over come and still set up or change your postion or angle, grip structure to make the move work. You learn quick that way with partner feed back. then bump up the resistance after you feel comfortable with that to 100% and still pull it off or some other combination or move set up at that higher level of resitance. I am just saying don't go 100% all the time for sub. You train a few moves in class with little or no resitance and then go straight into 100% try to sub each other sparring. diffrent postional sparring, diffrent resitance levels, partner feed back, and you can learn and progress faster, thats what works for me and alot of other people I know as well. On that note some higher rankers go 100% and kick your butt all the time others that are worth a darn go out your level, or sligthly above to make you work and leanr to apply the moves with resitance. I haven't seen a black belt level instructor go 100% all the time with there new students trying to sub them every chance they get, they usually go according to that students level trying to build them up to where they can go all out on them after a few years of training. I do agree you got to have resistance. I am preachig that on this board since I joined. I agree its a huge diffrence just going through the motions and then trying to do them on a full resisting partner. Of course they are going to have trouble with applying it. BUt my advice to drill the moves the guy said doing reps and then resistance training was dead on! You don't need to full out spar all the time, it is good to use to gauge where your at, but you use potional sparring, you get better quicker. Go ask your bjj instructor. Alot of them if not all learned more by postional sparrring. Working same move over and over with resistance. You check out other MMA fighters and Good BJJ'ers they say the same thing. Jean jeac machado says it also. If he has a trouble with postion or move he puts him self in it over and over and works to get out. Same with pulling off a sub he works it, drills it over and over until he makes it work. I think were saying the same thing but wording it diffrent. daedalus, who is your bjj instructor, gustavo dantes, Roland sarria, Jerry Luarita, megaton? Where you train at? -

gogoplata is what its called. He sets it up off of "mission control" where you have one foot in the hip and one fot around the head or neck like you were saying and then grabbing the foot with his arm. He then then changes gribs so he is grabbing front ways back of the hand facking you. on the ohter side of his head. basically same side your leg is going over the head is the side he grabs closest to thatleg with the forarm in the side of the neck. Pushes the head away and goes for omoplata if the guy pushes back his weight into him he go with the shin under the throat. one form arm around his neck grabbing the fooot the other hand palm on the heal pushing with the palm on the heal to drive the shin into there neck. While the other hand on gthe back of the neck grabbing the foot keeps them from escapping. I got that move from Eddie's brown belt I took a private with in arizona back in January. I Hope what I wrote made since. I am not the best grammer, spelling, punchation person out there. Pretty poor at that stuff. -

Yeah I understand. go to http://www.thetwister.tv/Techniques.htm that will show you the techniques for the invisible collar, the electric chair, and the meat hook. Yeah I play more of a half guard, to high closed guard, or triangle lock bottom game. I some times play spider guard or other open guards, I am still not incorportated rubber guard or mission control into my game yet either. -
Probably Oh and that site you sent, that is just espinage, that doesn't classify those guys as ninja's. It's a dead practice. Most places only study the empty hand, taijitsu, some weapons training and some interal aspects, but allot of the espinange techniques and other techniques aren't in high training order. Even killing techniques aren't high demand in the art. Any way I am done talking about make-believe Ninja's. Time to face modern times, and reality people. Day dream in your black pajamas, and sneaking around the neiborhood. All I have to say is "Ninja Please!"

Its a type of guard used by eddie bravo go to onthemat.com and check out video's, and then click on submisison wrestling. You will see a clip called 10th Planent Jiu-JItsu that is eddie bravo's school. Eddie bravo coined the term rubber guard Rubber guard is when you have on foot in the hip and the other accross teh opponets shoulder grabbing your ankle palm up. just tigher guard for no gi. and helps take away the striking power or your opponent if you use it for MMA. That type of move I described is called "mission control" but alot of moves make up what is called the rubber guard Deisgned because after practicing it for awhile yoru knee's feel like rubber lol any one try the meat hook postion to set up triangles, supergalatic, you try the invisible collar move yet. I took a a couple of private lessons under Eddie Bravo's brown belt Jason Chambers 7 or 8 months back in Arizona. He showed me some neat moves. I likethe electric chair from half guard if the post a leg up you can pull that leg lock move on them. YOu know that one? -

very true that is why its "buyer beware" Yes I have seen quite a few black belts asking lower ranks stuff. Sad isn't it! He can teach the best he can thats all he can do. IF all the instructors are at a certain level and one is definetly doesn't match that level the other students will know. To bad that waters down the belt qualifications. -
why everyone hates Taekwondo
Adonis replied to white belt's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
True BJJ is strong as far as black belt level but there are some schools that let some people slip through the cracks and get higher rank like a blue belt or some times purple. Most of the Mcdojoism I see in BJJ is indviduals promoting them selves to black belt. I think in that since competion is good for BJJ, because it relies so much more on resistance "alive" training compared to TKD or other arts. Where you have to deal with factors of leverage, body weight, and person resisting you, so yo have to know your stuff to hang with your belt level. Some people don't compete though. Thats okay though if you and your students don't compete it looks fishy to the rest of the BJJ world. -
They may have traditions of teaching that stuff but I serioulsy doubt in the full extent as it used to be. As well as they don't serve in the same fuctions they used to, because of modern technology and such. "Ninja's aren't ment to for fighting in effective way but the most swifest and steathiest way." Your contraditcing your self right there buddy. swift and steath is effective. So that saying made no sense. as well as big deal modern day special forces do the same look at the sniper training covers those same tactical thinking just employed diffrently then acient Ninja training. Either way I am done with this silly thread. Oh by the way tradition in japan has been put to the side as well. MMA has been bigger then alot of those traditional japense schools.

depends on the style if other styles of Taekwondo has same names and forms and don't belong to that org then there screwed on law suit issue's. If that was the case then american kenpo guys like tracy, traco, and other break off's of Ed Parker would have been sued. Now using the name of that org can be copyright protection but you would have to come up with a diffrent name, worse case scenerio change the names of the forms. many have done it before that why there exist so me break off's of diffrent systems. Either way, if you want to stay at the school do your best to create quality students make sure you have high standards for them and make sure the students work to excell for them. People aren't stupid. Well most people aren't they will reach a degree and find out that black belt either doesn't know what she is talking about when she does teach or figure out for themselves really quick when I bet she has to ask the lower ranks how the moves go again or she is teaching them incorrectly. Unfortanely your not the head of that school so how the instructor wants to run it is his choice. Do your best to create quality students and have your standards for them to move on high. If you can't handle the situation there any more Distance and cut your self off from that school and form your own. YMCA likes martial art programs if they dont' have one already there in your area. OR you can check out gyms or other places or take up a diffrent style. I would have a talk with other black belts and then if all feel the same with you every one can sit down and talk with the owner this could be a good or bad thing depending on how its done the owner could listen to every one and maybe change his mind about the situation or he can feel every one is ganging up on him and he feels he is being attacked emotionaly or overwhelmed and resit your pleas of good quality. So you can also talk to him one on one but he may feel okay with it and change his mind or think that the other black belts aren't bitching about it so he will keep doing what he's doing. OR you can get fed up with the politics and persue other schools, styles, or create your own. Good luck to you. -

Do you your best to give quality teaching and focus on that. There a good belt levels and not so good. So the women made black belt big deal, just get across to the students that belts don't matter and diffrent instructors have diffrent standards as what skill level qualify's for what belt. Eventually you work with the students enough they probably will surpass the crappy black belt who got promoted and she wouldn't able to hang with the other students because of your more strict, and detailed instruction. I seen other black belts leave schools before feeling inadequate because they weren't able to hang with the lower belts. -
Any one train this type of guard on this forum? very difficult if your not very flexible I have noticed. I have decent flexibility to least hold onto "mission control" or "meat hook" postion but transitions to go to "invisible collar, trinagle omoplata and such can be difficult at times because of lack of flexiblity. I see how Eddie Bravo who coined the term pulls it off well because of his flexiblity. Any one else train Rubber guard?

aikido a grappling art?
Adonis replied to Goju_boi's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I study bjj and I defiently agree on the point that was made that you don't have to master a move to defend against that move. I don't perform gi chokes well with a resisting apponent but I can defend against them. Same with other attacks, learning to recognize them as they are done to you and knowing how to protect your self is what you need. You can use MMA competion look at wrestlers in early to mid UFC time frame why did they start doing so well because they recognized BJJ subs and was able to defend against them even though they weren't adept at pulling off the same subs. Even now you have strikers do some ground defense enough to avoid subs and get back to there feet. example of that is Dan Henderson he is decent at ground work but isn't on the same level as of detail to set up subs like say Renzo Gracie but in there fight in Pride Fighting Championships 13 in 25March2001. He did well when renzo played guard on him and dan was able to break out and escape Renzo's guard and defend any attempts for subs to be able to know renzo out with a sprawl uper cut combo when Renzo tried to shoot in on Dan. So that example illustrates you don't have to be master of those subs to recognize and defend against them. -
I understand that, its the same as samarai arts. Applying the samari attitude or spirit to other endevors. People seem to still dream though of ancient times and like to think Ninja's of old times still exist for some reason. Times of Ninja's, samarai, and knights and medivial armor have been done away with modern technology. Only to be left in movies and re-enactments of recreation.
