Not old enough? so your under 18 years old? Where in missouri are you? You know were st roberts or waynesville is. basically I am at Fort Leonard wood (US army base) I heard of some good places up in springfield. I know of a good Muay thai, pro mixed martial artist that travles around missouri and teaches's people and frequents gyms. You heard of Jeff Ford? If your close at all to St Louis they have Vaughi's Jiu-Jitsu up there. Rodrigo Vaughi is a black belt under Rickson Gracie. -
theory and techinque is good by Renzo and Royler gracie. Or you can go with Black belt techniques by Rigan and Jean jeac machado. Go with what you like. Just remember not go through to much technique meaning. Quality is better then quantity you want to persue your training faster. Learn to get and maintain postions your instructor taught you as well as how to reverse or get out of them if you get put in the same postions. example is mount. If you get mounted learn to escape. not only by practing techniques you were taught but also by just postional sparring. Guy trys to hold that postion on you start with that type of resistance after you feel comfortable with the mechanics and doing the moves of the escapes. Then Work on your partner resisting you and trying to hold that postion work that till you fell comfortable Then switch to having your partner work on keeping the mount and changing postions to knee on belly, side mount, scar hold or cross side or north south postion basically your partner feeling you move and chaging to a diffrent top game postion once you learn to deal with getting out of the bottom from there top game or at least getting your self in a better postion from the bottom like putting them back into guard. Have them work on submission and work on defeending those and trying to get out of his from the bottom. THen switch to were you try to hold mount and diffrent postions and maintain them as well as work on setting up your subs. Key is resistance training. I don't learn personally from full out sparring unless I use it as educational tool. example I keep getitng caought in certain postions or subs then I ask the partner how they set them up and then I start doing postional drilling and asking for feed back how to defend or escape those subs or postions and drill that certain aspect over and over. Any way enjoy your training. Your going to get frusterated at times and some times feel like your getting know where but don't give up. You will improve just have patience and work hard, train smart, and stay with continue practice and you will do fine. Books are more for refrence of techniques you already learned or they can be used as a good reminder for deatils in a certain technique. Maybe your doing the "UPA" mount escape and you missed what your instructor was talking about how to use angle to make it more effective and to work. But you read the same thing and a book explained it or went into more detail and you were able to pick it up or have it click for you. I hope this helps.

actually a good JKD guy I think the name is spelled Sharram musavi teach in arizona. He is one of Wellington "Megaton" Diez (3rd degree black belt under Rickson or Royler gracie) actually teaches those types of self defense moves as well. He would use raw steak meat and put a shirt on it and teach how to bite. Yeah you may not be taught how to do those stuff and still do them. BUt there are ways to do them to get more effective results. bitting with the front upper teath depends on what body part you bite with if the person pushes back into your teach hard can break your tooth. if you bite with the sides of the teath more designed to break down and tear Meat you can create a better more damaging effect. You bite and turn your head causing a tearing motion in the flesh you bite. create more damage as opposed to just biting down and then releasing or holding onto the bite. All this info I got from an aqaintence who went to one of sharrams seminars. Stuff he told that sharram teaches does make since though. Any way I wondered about that. I know some people don't train those tactics there for don't use them. As appposed to some people can think they are just dirty tactics to use. Like the old elementry days were if you did any thing but punch your considered using sissy tactics. So some people have that mental hang up. Or they just don't want to hurt the person that bad they are going a against. I wonder if trhat happend in the early UFC. As well as if some one was more trained on those tactics how it would fear now with trained fighters now adays how it would change the game and certain postions fighters use on the ground. Take for example in Pride where where a fighter is postioned on all fours or turled up. So you knee the head in the downed apponted. When later on in pride they allowed that tactic Silva has ko'ed and used that technique effectively on grapplers who would shoot in on him and he would sprawl and kneed on the head. Coleman has ko'ed some one the same way. As well as I believe igor won his fight against Kerr doing the same technique. (correct me if I was wrong about the kerr and Igor fight on that one) So that illustrates the change of the game when some one like sakraba who went for single leg take downs and shot in alot now has to worry about a fighter sprawling and throwing knee's to his head were before he can wait comfortablly and get a single leg from that postion of "of all fours" also called (turtle) postion or he apponent tries to take his back and he does well in reversing the situation.

I like modified wreslter or mauy thai head clinch where your holding onto the back of the head in a clinch and going for upper cuts to the chin or other part of the face and then when they try to defend switch to hook.

I don't learn well from books. Can't stand them! Reminds me of the grappling magazine articles where they have technique demonstrations and you wonder how the transition through some of the postions. THey go for a guard pass break the legs open and then all of a suddenthe next picture they are in side mount. That type of stuff drives me crazy. IF you want to go for tapes in stead of books go for BJJ 101 by Roy Harris very educational and set up for better learning. Mario Sperry also has some solid DVD's as well as Marcello Garcia and some others.

Definetly agree with you elbows and knee's. I think alot of people hold onto things because of tradition. Even though its not applicable much now a days. Weather the technique worked at one time or another. How high percetage of a move is it. depends on the situation and the practioner but in most cases butterfly kick isn't a high situation percetage move any way.

aikido a grappling art?
Adonis replied to Goju_boi's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
what city you at goju_boi and what was teh name of the school or head instructor. That is wierd. I know some places that don't promte but 5-7 years as a white belt is insane. It takes 8 to 10 years to get a black belt in BJJ so that is very odd. I hope thats not the case. that would suck for other white belts if he competes lol! talk about sand bagging! -
It all depends you can take some one who is an advanced rank or a very good black belt and has his basics down and throw them in antoher art. Taekwondo or another karate art. I found karate and taekwondo has simular excution of movents in forms or movements shared between styles some little diffrences but some one with good basics from that style and is really good. I can see go to another simular art and obtain a black betl becase there body is already conditioned for those movements. Also some who has a good grasp of the movesment and concepts can acheive quicker rank compared to begineer starting out fresh. JMO

How long to earn a Black Belt

Depends on what course. Some BJJ adacdemies have children classes. Its based off of how well they tranistion and perfom the techniques as well as how well they can apply them moves on upper belts as well as there own. If they are at least hanging with blue belts giving them heck! THen alot of acadimies will promote them. -
aikido a grappling art?
Adonis replied to Goju_boi's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I know other BJJ schools were the students have gotten blue belts in 6months. It all depends on instructors promotion standards and the skill level of the students. Pankration club? Is that the one run by Jeff Funichello? I think thats his last name I been out of AZ mma loop for awhile. -
http://www.groundfighter.com/products/catid/22.html or https://www.RoyHarris.com. Roy harris is more educational and designed for learning, but mario sperry's DVD's are also good and his moves are solid moves to learn. There are others as well. You can also check out BJJ.org for technique section of the site and see some good moves. Or go to https://www.onthemat.com and go to the video sections they have good free down loads of both Jiu-Jitsu competion, grappling, and Mixed Martial arts video's you can down load for free. Good Luck!

He is talking about doing one with one of Rickson Gracie's guy's. You can end up chatting with Eddie on MMA.TV or Myspace.com. onthemat.com has some good free downloads of techniques and diffrent matches. I haven't heard about the mundials yet. this should give you alot of tapes also to check out. You can look at Marcello Garcia's video's, Mario Sperry's DVD's. Going back to royharis.com you can purchase his dvd off that site I believe. http://www.groundfighter.com/products/catid/22.html Ground fighter has a lot of diffrent dvd's you can get. I have seen some of Mario Sperry's vale tudo 1 series. I seen all of vale tudo 3. That one is good also.
