  1. white belt, It gets a bad rap do to public perception of it. A lot of big comercial schools feel to stay open and get alot of business they do whats called "the belt factory" were they promote alot of people in a short amount of time 1 to 2 years. But those same people skills are low quality compared to others who have spent more time and focus on there training to reach there black belt. SO alot of other black belts consider them sub par. Also training methods used for rules in regular tkd alot of instructors focus on tournament style taekwondo were rules such as no kicks below the belt and no punches to head and also judges that allow any strike weather the person is leaning back and just taps the others head no way it would generate much power to do any real stopping or effective damage to an opponent but the judges let them get away with that in teh tournaments which also leads to bad habits. but it sounds like your instructor from the way you describe is doing a good job on his training methods and how he is training you. Keep it up and I hope your having fun. Enjoy the wonderful world of martial arts.
  2. what are the four main styles of shorin ryu. Matsubayashi, kobayashi, and matasumura. I can't think of the forth one right now.

  5. I only met a few good looking ones at my dojo over the the years I spent there. Only 1 I got involoved with.
  6. monkey girl weren't you trainign in a diffrent style then TKD since you moved from your dojong and went to college and trained in an art out there. what was it called? or am I wrong and you stayed with the same style and program.
  7. Yeah mix of grappling and striking work. Imagined doing tkd and tang so do same time though. THat would be awekward becaue of diffrent rules and variations of how to do stuff. maybe your at your other school and you do a move form the school you trained at before it can be frusterating.
  8. No some students claim favoristim or many other problems arise. say you have male instructor and you have female students in class he is dating one. Some time insturctors touch students to correct them they just don't get moves unless you move them. So they move arm postion or what ever. but some people are so insecure they view there partner doing that and consider them flirting imaging he made a certain look or pass at his student when that wasn't the case. I am glad karatekid your relationship is going well. Like I said it is a good thing or a bad thing depending if the people break up especially bad if its on bad terms to where you NEVER want to see that again. Makes trainign awekward. I dated a girl in my dojo. One I just went on a couple dates but that wasn't big deal more freindly dates any way. Another one I got serious with and it didn't work out we ended up going are seperate ways but not on the best of terms made trianing not pleasant at all. Hard to focus on training when your mind is else where.
  9. 1. common sense 2. being respectful, 3. good communication skills 4. conflict advoidence. 5. fire arms training 6 other weapons trining 7. Running/spriting (shoud be number 4.) My applogiozies. 8. (Insert style you like to train in) 9. (same as number 10. (same as number 9)
  10. I know we don't go to are pacticular art to look for women. but some times a pretty girl shows up and you end up liking each other and dating. I would be honest I wouldn't recommend it. Some instructors even go as far as making it a dojo/dojang/club/kwoon/school policy for no dating. I don't blame them even though I wouldn't go to a school telling me who I can or can't date. It can be a good thing or a bad thing. Mostly if the relationship doesn't last and you end off on bad terms. THen either one or the other student quits becaue they don't like the other or want to be around them. Or it isn't an enjoyable experience to go to class and see them. Depends on how bad the relationship ends. I wouldn't recommend it though. Same as dating in the work place. It can turn out good but if you break up on bad terms it can be an unpleasant experience seeing the person all the time. Any one have any interesting stories that happend at there dojo or school because of people dating. I definetly wouldn't recommend instructors dating there students. Just bring more drama in your business and personal life.
  11. It dependson on the training focus. I wouldnt do something like Ed Parker Kenpo and Shotokan karate at the same time. Maybe after I doBuine enough of one to get teh fundamentals down. Understanding and applying alot of the concepts and get at least a decent base in it. because thats when confusion arises. developing a decent base is whats key. but something like BJJ and karate or judo and some other striking art is okay. As for me I already have my base so I go to other arts now but I am not big on arts or whole systems in general I train what I like. I enjoy doing bjj but I wouldn't mind learning wrestling also but not the whole art of wrestling most just the take downs and developing that. So it all depends. but doing to much arts at same time. Can get confusing and annoy your instructor. I can see why some insturcotrs don't like there students training in other arts if they are same type as far as both stand up type styles because it is a disrutpion in class. (e.g) some students do moves they learned in other style or teach other students that stuff during class or keep bugging the instructor with questions like "well this style its called this name and we do this punch this way. why don't we do that here?" I don't care if other people trian in other styles at the same time if they have specific reason for it to impove on. It is worthless to do if you want to understand the art and its principles in it if your just starting martial arts and don't have a base to build off of. but if your going to diffrent arts for specific things you want to lean then thats fine. (e.g) taking wrestling not to do the whole art but for the idea of learning some take downs that would compliment your BJJ if you did that. Idea is to learn to get good at some thing. seeking quality as opposed to quanity. Some people like that though they love learning diffrent forms and diffrent stuff and seek to learn as much as they can but to much info leads you to memorizing the patterns but not being able to apply the moves because your focusing more on qaunity of stuff you got to learn.
  12. part of when you sign up. There is always going to be hiddien fee's. Some instructors push touramnets heavily they don't make it required but it is strongly encouraged in some schools and that cost extra. sparring gear obviously will cost extra. So there are fee's that will be payed in martial arts. which doesn't make it a mcdojo.
  13. martail artist good post. You have a point I don't go out pacificaly looking for women who do martial arts to date them. But if I meet a good women I connect with her staying in shape and into martial arts is an added plus because we share the same interest. I do have to admit martial artist was very ccrrect in his post. I seen alot of women and men who were in poor condtion becaue of unheahtly life styles they lead. We all seen the masters and high degree black belts with the Huge guts on them.
  14. If you look at the word it self "kung/gong fu" my chinese room mate said the translation mean "ward hard or time/work" basically any one who does a job well has good kung fu. so those that are top of the mma sport use good "kung fu"
  15. One of the biggest things that helped me grow in the martial arts is having a good training partner. there are several types of partners but one pacifificaly I like is the "feed back" partner. there are those that don't give you feed back. they catch you with a move but don't tell you how they set it up so you can work on that weaknesss. Now specifically for BJJ having a good training partner is key ingredient to getting better quicker. with a good partner offering feed back when moves are not quite working or there are holes in your game. OR where they catch you in a move and offer feed back back how they set it up. You learn how to deal with that and grow so next time you may not make that mistake. that type of partner is ideal IMO. because they help you grow which they are smart because it helps them grow. It helps them to either have to adjust and work on antoher move to get you with or find new ways to set up the old move to make it work. So what type of training partners does every one else like?
  16. I am currently with an bridge engineer unit. horrible unit with to much drama. Its one of those units were every one knows every one and rumors fly and people love to talk. The particular mos of the main body in the unit. That mos is confided to 5 places in the world they can go as far as duty stations so you know how that can get when you run into the same people all the time.
  17. it all depends. I dont think its lack of respect for there art. I had an instruction in one of the styles I taught in shaolin Kempo who was a 1st dan he moved to arizona where at the time there weren't really any from his system. He opend a school almost 10 years ago and is doing pretty good now. He's forth dan but from other instructors. but even at 1st and 2nd dan I seen him hang with several diffrent instructors who were 5th 4th and 3rd dan's in diffrent arts. So it all depends on the person.
  18. to me mcdojo is a combination of money seeking and poor instruction and student performance level comapred to simuluar or same style of the art. Taekowdo, Kenpo, or any school that pushes black belts in 1 or 2 years. outrageous prices, and alot of hidden prices, that are mandatory to do pay to reach the coveted "BLACK BELT" and poor quality over all students is a mcdojo to me. renzo gracie jiu-jitsu adacedmy in new york I think you can pay around 150 or 250 a month. thats expensive but is it a mcdojo no because of the quality of students he produces. As well as quality martial artist he is. but if he had a rediculous program that produced low quality students alot of belts to push out there for getting more money from testing free's. then I would say its a mcdojo. biggest thing of mcdojo is poor qaulity of students especially higher rank comapred to other schools of the same art.
  19. I know because they are used to doing contact and "fighting" those drunken kung fu guys seemed more into forms or into particular way there art./style "looked" so they trained in my opinion with the look as being more important then actual application.
  20. to me a mcdojo is a place that is overly expensive and you don't the quality of training to the dollar amout your spending. Personaly I consider any thing over 100 to be kind of expensive. I would probably go 150 at the most. but if I pay that type of money a month I am expecting darn good insrustion.
