go check it out and see if you like the instruction if thats the only place around that teaches hapkidio that is adfortable to you but you also like the instruction and feel comfortable with the school, other students and instructors and the over price of the programs. THen your good to go. I met some 1st and 2nd dan's in diffrent styles and they were incredible martial artist and teachers. One of my instructors in shaolin Kenpo is 1st dan when I met him. He didn't care much for rank after black belt so he took forever to test that was just his personality but he can hang with alot of other 3rd 4th and some 5th dan's as well. So it depends on many factors. best thing is check it out. See if they offer any intro packages. Some will give you a free introductory package or let you try the class out for 10 or 20 bucks for that class worth it to check out the instruction. Maybe watch a few classes on diffrent days and try out the instruction. base your opinion on how well you enjoy the instructiion and how detailed you feel the techniques and quality of the instruction is.

iron leg is that were you keep your leg straight and put it behind both legs or frong leg nad kick back sweeping them? I thought that was the hock down. I thought the iron broom was when you take your lead leg and hook there front leg pulling it into you take tehre balance and pushing them off balance that way. those techniques are hard if your opponent is back up or going away from you at an angle. basically your opponent is running away from you. so how you deal with that?

Karate Vs Wing chun
Adonis replied to steve57's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I think I know the video that wasn't wing chun that was drunken boxing. they were more focused on posture and having the "look" of drunken boxing as opposed to using the concepts for actual fighting. so they kyokushin guy kicked there you know whats. Kept placing round house kicks to there heads alot. those guys looked cool doing the drunken kung fu while they were getting beat down. -
do guys like chicks that a martial artists?
Adonis replied to IAMA_chick's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
having things in common is important. but if the girl does martail arts she has to do it serious for me to like her unless she is hot already but doing martial arts and being really into it is an added plus. -

drunken master, Thats good I like some of the sweeps they show in shaolin kenpo but I find them harder to pull off on an opponent when were sparring and close to the same level or if the person is higher skill level. I find the wreslting take downs a higher percentage to use for me for now until I work out the other techniques with more practice and ways to set them up to make them more effective.

Karate Vs Wing chun
Adonis replied to steve57's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
there pretty much can both be awekward to me. I found some of the stances to be quite awekward as well as some of the hand techniqes. Like having the for arm aligned of the center line for punches. I find both in karate and wing chun to have some of the stances techniques awekward and I am not talking about awekward because of not used to them but more awekward because they don't fit with natrual movements of the body. But agian that goes back to which style of wing chun and karate because there are several. -

true goes back to the practioner and how well the use that style to understand there body and pick up how to do the moves and apply them. Again person and training methods. -

I go with the saying not only who ever trains harder but trains smarter. It goes back to trainthing methods. As well as mentioned up to the practioner. Who ever trains there to work with a resisting opponent. You can can take say 4 people from the same art say bjj. first 2 people train to do the technique as the instructor taught them say escapping the mount by the trap/opa/and roll technique. the guy on top has a good base mounts the opponent keeps his butt on them and keeps in a good base. The guy traps his arm and traps the foot with his foot to the side they go to and bumps and rolls and switch off. Now the 2nd group of two people do the same thing but after getting the steps down. They had resistance. the guy on top makes it harder for the person to take him over by pulling his hand out and using that to base when the guy opas to roll. so now the guy on the bottom has to figure a way to keep ahold of that or stop it either that or he makes it look like he is going to go to one side but changes the technique and goes to the other side. they do that a few times now the guy on top adds more resistance now he keeps even better base of him self and stops the opponent from taking him over with the opa so now the opponent, say changes the technique and flows to an elbow, shrimp technque and puts the guy back into his guard. the group with the resistance training is going to be able to deal better because thats what some on on the street is going to do or some one in a tourment is resist. Maybe not resist in the same way but they still get a better idea how to deal with an opponent who is resisting and make what they do work. get out of that bottom postion compared to the two who just go through the motions of the drill. Even though they do the steps as the instructor showed. The resistance training is key to making it work for real. Again goes back to training methods and the indivudals applying them.

very true those are good techniqaues. I also like to add in wrestling techinques. techniques were you go to wrap the body going for leg sweep. I think its simular to iron broom. single leg and double legs are good also as the ones you mentioned.

thats like punching to the forhead. How many people got there hands broken doing that in UFC, y ou don't see it as common now. One do to the gloves but to people have better target accuracy and also better targerts they go for. Instead of ball there fist and try to pummel the other person with them. You can make the spear hand work to soft targets but were saying condtion them to make it more safe for you.

I am not to familular with alot of the matusmura ones. I fall under Tony Sandoval's groupd and he has gone through several instructors and styles of white crane training. So he teaches mix of forms. Mostly alot of deep concepts nad training is the root of his training focus as apposed to techniques and forms but the concepts behind them is the focus. You can go to one of his seminars and learn one form of even one move of a form but you feel like you got alot of info because he can "shot gun" alot of concepts at you that makes the move work for so many things as well as concepts that apply to alot of other moves you do. I like his teaching because you can relate or put those ideas to any style for application. Any one heard of Tony Sandoval? -

sam then you guys got more female martial artist. becaues in most schools in the US its more predominalty male classes. accept the women's only type classes then obviously its all just women. LOL! Do any of you think maybe the factors I said before becasue of societys conditining and personal belief systems about men not hitting women and supposed to being there protectors as welll as women doing things lady like. those are the biggest factors as to why some women don't go for more contact and men not wanting to hit them harder or as hard as they do other men?
-
well I was going to write some stuff then I saw your post sam. You pretty much wrote what I was going to right so...yeah never mind. I just say it again though it all depends on your training methods and gearing towards an opponent who is going to resist the moves your trying to do and counter back by trying to put a beat down on ya. so basically if most if not all your trianing methods consist of forms, very stiff body mechancis, striking in the air, and limited non resisting partner work. Its not going to be as effective agianst others who train more for a moving, non stationary, resiting opponent. Again goes back to training methods.

Yeah I gotten past awekward stuff about grappling with opposite gender I just see it as training. wer: you grapple in a thick gi. So what do you do when you have no-gi? lol!
-
Menjo made a good point. thanks karatekid1975, and Wer for your input. I find that true when I have sparred females as well. I think alot of it has to do with society and a way person is braught up. Men usually are braught up to protect women and not hit them. I think its a physcological, subconcious reason why men back of when making contact with women. as well in general society brings wome up to be more lady like, and that full contact stuff is a guys thing type attitude. so also a subconcious thing. How many mothers stick there kids in ballet or dance or other activities as opposed to martial arts. Again I think alot has to do with society and its views and physcological aspects of that.. Wer: you trian with jason delucia? thats good. I heard his skills picked up alot on the ground. I saw his record on sherdog site. 33win 19laws and 1 draw. He faught mostly pancrase. faought some tough figthers most notably bas ruttan. thats good you got a trainer with alot of experience to offer his students.

true don't want to do that. yeah the instructor was pissed off after the test becaue of it. I watched a belt test when I was at his school a couple months ago when I was visting family while I was on leave. Only take down they really knew how to do was the hock down. (sweeping with the back leg against the opponents front leg.) to bad they didn't know how to set up the move when the opponent offers resistance so must of the time there body was to far from the opponent so when they bring that leg up for the trip they are off balance opponent has to do is shove them or push them and they fall over. thats when learning some judo and wrestling take downs would help. Oh well!
-
depends on how your methods of conditioning it and how often you do those methods.
-
elbows and knee's. I agree they don't take the place of sparring, but they are also all good training tools, more tools you use to tune your body up better off you are. sparring alone won't develop your power as a heavy bag wood, neither would a heavy bag help you deal persay with a moving opponent trying to hit you. I do agree with you you need sparring. Just not to have it replace using other training methods as well.
