Considering switching styles
orion82698 posted a topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I'm considering not taking up TKD, and possibly going towards Shorei-Ryu. What are your thoughts on this? I have been interested in TKD for the main reason of the off the wall kicks, and workout. However, I went to a Shorei-Ryu school up the street from my house last night, and took a liking to it. They seem to train hard, and the price is very affordable. I have heard of this place by word of mouth. Tell me your thoughts on this! -
This is hard. I do my push-ups on a pilates ball. This is about 15inches off the ground (for my feet) I can do 40. Every day, I try to do one more. My goal, is to do 300 a day. It's getting tougher, but everyday, I push myself to one more. It's really hard after my chest day at the gym

It's not too bad. The only thing I wonder about, is how much of them actually study a MA, Vs. street dancing/gymnastics.

How long did it take before you started to notice you were able to keep that foot up, without jumping around? What it take to get your there? Here is what I do, to work on my balance. Hold onto a chair, and position myself as if I just kicked. Then, I release the chair, and hold for as long as I can. Another thing I do, it bring my knee as close to me as I can while standing, and try not to jump around. What are some of your practices?

Good look Jay! I forgot about that place

Focus on a 40/40/20 diet. 40% Carbs 40% Protein 20% Fat Carbs (Clean carbs) : 100% Oat Meal, Brown Rice, wheat pasta Protein: Chicken, Pork, Red Meat, Fish Fat: Nuts, yogurt.... so forth Drink tons of water. I do about 1.5 gallons a day. Yeah, you'll pee a lot, but it's good. Get on a multi vitamin, and fish oil 3 times a day. Good fats will help burn bad fats. Remember, to build muscle you need to eat more calories, then you would if you're trying to cut. If you wanna see your ABS, you're going to have to cut. Also, ABS are just like every other muscle group. They need rest. Working them more than 5 days a week is over training, and they will not develop. Here is my diet that I created. I have lost 65lbs, and have gone from 38% Body fat, to 18%. I'm still working towards my goal, but my abs are starting to come through. Breakfast 8:30am 1 scoop of Whey w/water 1 apple Morning Snack 10:30am 1/2 Cup Oatmeal, 1/2 GoLean Lunch 12:30pm (Chicken 8oz Salmon 6oz Steak 8oz) <----- One of these 1 cup of Brown Rice Veggies 1 cup Mid day Snack 2:30pm 8 carrots, yogurt 1 cup Pre workout 5:00pm 1/2 cup Oatmeal blue berries Dinner 7-7:30pm (Chicken 8oz Salmon 6oz Steak 8oz) <----- One of these 1/2 cup oatmeal Veggies 1 cup 2 scoop of Whey w/water Calories 1939 w/Chicken, 2081 w/salmon and Steak Fat 17 Carbs 283 Protein 197 sugar 61

Shadow boxing is awesome! Do it almost every day. I also do about 150 jump and jacks, 100 knee ups, pushups till failure (even on bench day), Crunches, leg raises, hindu squats, jump rope... it's endless! -

Wow... I have just noticed this. Thank you all! -
Well, I wouldn't but that is the belt system, and since we have to pay to test into every single one of those belts, it's a belt Not saying I care for it though
-
I think there should be only 3 belts. White, Red, Black. White belt for a while, atleast for 3 years, until the student has proven themselves. Red for another year after that, until they prove they're ready for black. I don't understand this whole color belt thing either. I'm going to where a blackbelt to my next class and see what they say!

You, Vent.....Nahhhh!!!!! I am starting to see the same thing. I understand people have got to make a living...... It seems like all of the recent BB can't fight their way out of a wet paper bag!!! I don't know whats going on they are all excellent point fighters but they just can't free fight or do anything I would consider scary. I thought it was supposed to be a "Martial" art? Too many kids, too few adults. Maybe I'm just getting old and bored and need a change. -Marc Nope, I agree with what you say. There are too many kids (under 13) with black belts, walking around teaching adults. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but some of these black belts don't even have proper balance, form, and they're just kids. I hate to say it, but why does a 7-10 year old need to be a black belt? Do you honestly think they know what it means to be a black belt? Some of them don't even listen.

I thought the best parts where when he was running through the streets, and the main fight seen when he knocks out all three of the "bad guys" in the bar -
LOL, yeah... I was in a hurry, and just wrote that

Being hard on yourself... good or bad?
orion82698 replied to karatekid1975's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well, you have offered me a lot of help so far, I hope I can return the favor Personally, I strive for perfection. I wouldn't expect anything less from myself. I to get down on myself for "taking a shortcut" or not getting a great workout, or training session in. My take on your situation is, if you didn't do well in your form or for your test, you didn't pratice hard enough. I can say that I'm happy for you, for the reason that your school didn't let you slide. I'm sure you know the saying, you get what you put into it. It's hard for me to let go of what is going on in my life, and focus, but that's what makes this so much fun, and a challenge, because you have to let them go. It's the greatest. My only regret, is that I didn't start this sooner! Good luck KK1975. You'll get it next time. Just really push yourself -
I remember that, and the SteveS movies too. Thanks for the reminders
-
It's expensive as all heck though. If I'm going to pay $700 for 2 days of training, it had better be taught by Mike Chat or Matt Mullins.
-
Honestly, I think it's awesome, from the stand point of a workout/show-off/tournament. As for self-defence.... I doubt it's useful. How does anyone know though. Mike Chat himself said he has never been in a street fight. I for one will never be the first or last to test it. By saying extreme, it's by no means any greater than any other MA, it's simply just taking it a step further by adding a gymnastic/acrobatic feel to it. FUN TO WATCH THOUGH!

Ok, I think I have all of you beat. White to White w/stripe Yellow to Yellow w/stripe Orange to Orange w/stripe Green to Green w/ Stripe Purple to Purple w/ stripe Blue to Blue w/stripe Red to Red w/stripe Brown to Brown w/ stripe Pre Black belt the 1 Dan Black Belt. That's a total of 18 belts to go through.
