  1. Modivation is everything. I'm a perfect example. I have lost 65lbs, 18% bodyfat, gone from a size 42-38 (almost a 36 now). I haven't had a smoke in over a year (quit cold turkey). I have been modivated the entire time. I have tried this in the past, lost modivation and failed. It is modivation that keeps you going. You wake up every morning and go to work, not because you want to, or like your job (Most people don't) but because you're modivated to do so. You want keep your car, your house, your credit score good. This all requires modivation.
  2. Another thing that I found out about this school, is that they do not do breaking. What are your feeling towards that. I have never attempted to break a board or brick before, so I really wouldn't mind not having to, but do any of you feel that this is a vital part in MA training, or selfdefence?
  3. That's an awesome way of putting it!
  4. LOL! As funny as that story is, it's also very sad. Sad to know that, that school was probably one of the best for them to learn Kung-Fu, and probably since they didn't have to pay uniforms or belts, the best priced. Everyone always complians about McDojo's and putting them outta business, however as long as there are parents around that want there child to be blackbelt, or themselves in less than 3 years, there will always be a "McDojo" around.
  5. Nope, you're right. The only one that I really like is the Tornado (which if you really want to get technical, is a spinning cresent kick). The 360 and 540.... I just cannot see spinning around twice to build up speed and power to be an effective kick. You would land and be like "Ok, where did he go" or "Man.... I'm dizzy" I just didn't know if this was practice or taught in any other style.
  6. What would the McDojo's do without 18 belts before black? How would they stay a float without their $30 fees with every belt? What would they do without there $200 to $500 black belt testing fee? What would the parents do for there kids? Honestly, I think that's the only reason a parent enrolls their kids in MA. "Well, Jonny's a Black belt!"
  7. Cool. Thanks everyone!
  8. So if you really want to look at it, Gojo-Ryu is Shorei-Ryu, correct?
  9. Sounds McDojo to me. Where do you study?
  10. I haven't heard that, but with so many different TKD schools out there, it's hard to have a standard
  11. Carbs 90 minutes before a workout is good. I usually go about 2 hours before I go to class. So I'll eat dinner 90 minutes before I have to leave, then head to class. This ensures that my stomach has had time to digest what I have just put into it, and the carbs are now into my system, providing me energy.
  12. True. A friend of mine is taking Wing Chun. He has told me that there are kicks in the art, but not like TKD. I agree with a lot of what everyone has said. It does seem that TKD has gotten a bad rap. Perhaps most of these kicks that I'm looking into are more of a "student created kick" then a technique passed down.
  13. Do a google search on Morihei Ueshiba. He's the founder of Aikido. It's quite an awesome MA. The ability to use ones strength against them.... WOW! I have wanted to study this, but I have choosen to learn a striking art first. When I have time, my Uncle takes time to give me some basics. He has taken me through "The Walk" which is first learned. It teaches you how to fall, and move. It's very graceful, and can be viewed as almost a dance when going through movements. He's giving me some pretty good techniques. He's been in Aikido for over 2 years now. I would take a few free lessons at some schools in your area. Be ready to fall, cause you fall a lot!
  14. I wouldn't worry about your son being a black belt. Being a black belt, doesn't make you an excellent martial artist. It doens't make you stronger, it doesn't make you wiser, it doesn't make you faster. If your son no longer advanced in belts, would he want to continue? Would you want him to continue? A black belt rank is awarded to let others know of your achivement. That you have worked hard, long, and are ready to take on the challenge of life. Your son should know before he gets to black, that he doesn't need a belt to tell him he's good. If I were you, I would worry more about the instruction/intructor, more than the color of your sons belt.
  15. I'm 5'7, 194lbs. I'm around 17% bodyfat. I hate being short, but..... you gotta use what you have been given
  16. Knights of Columbus!!!!! Wow..... that's two car payments, or 6 months of trainging payments. Man, I would see if you could find a training version for now. I want to by a authentic samurai katana, but $1200 right now just isn't in my wallet, or my bank
  17. Well.... from what I can see... it looks mainly like Tae Kwon Do. He appears to have studied some Kung Fu as well. Answered my own question
  18. Cool Thanks for your comments!
  19. No, Jhoon Rhee taught Bruce Lee how to "Effectively execute" a side kick
  20. I have yet to meet someone that has used it. Personally, If someone asked for my wallet, and had a gun, they would get my wallet. Now, if somoene pointed a gun at me to hurt me, or my wife or any loved one, I would beat the living crap outta them, or die trying. But, I would never use a high or an aerial kick to defend myself. I guess it's another main reason why I'm thinking of leaving TKD. It's an awesome sport, great workout, and fun, but I just don't see it being useful in a streetfight (My opinion). I first started TKD (only been in it for 3 months now granted) for the workouts, fun, and to learn a MA... however, I now what to try something different.
  21. That place looks pretty hardcore. I wonder how much it costs
