  1. Welcome to the forum.
  2. The sections are threaded in to each other. Kind of like a 2 piece pool cue.

  4. There are some metal ones that are made to do that. Others do not.
  5. Pacing yourself at a test is not the best strategy. One should go all out and if you melt down in the process so be it. In many schools part of the actual grading process at black belt is to see how dedicated the student is; to see how much they actually want the rank, as indicated by action not words.
  6. Welcome to the forum.
  7. One of the crucial differences in the martial arts culture of the two countries is that Korean children learn Tae Kwon Do in school. Few American grade schools offer any martial arts training to children. Those who do learn a martial art a a very small part of the population. It has been a while since I was in Korea but there is also a very large difference in the attitudes of the general population in terms of fitness for adults. Here we have a lot of gyms and health clubs where adults go to maintain some degree of fitness to offset their sedentary life styles. I do not remember a Korean equivalant. On the other hand there was a much higher percentage of the population that had a more physically active life in terms of jobs and lack of personal private transportation.

  10. Also one of the benefits that many get from their martial arts training is an increased abitlity to focus on what they are doing. With the kids this really shows up at school. And overcoming what you are talking about is how this abiltiy grows. Focus on your kata and your kata only. Block out what you see and hear around you. Yes this is difficult to many. But you will find that when you start being able to maintain your focus in the dojo you will have carry over other places as well.

Then does the right hand go to the side in a hito strike while the left hand goes to the hip. Right arm folds across the body horizontally while the left fist shoots out in a back fist with the elbow landing on the back of the right hand. Then the arms fold over horizontally and the right foot steps out into shiko dachi while the right had performs a hito strike. Does that sound more like it?
  12. Some of us also have been in high quality programs that were ran out of local YMCA's or community centers at a lower price that a commercial dojo. We learned from an instructor with a full time job who loved martial arts enough to want to teach part time. Few of us live in a dojo/dojang.
  13. Well in class the rule of the road is usually the lower grade is responsible for staying out of the way of a senior student. So if the person you are about to collide with is you junior they should give way. If the person you are about to collide with is your rank someone is moving incorrectly or you are too close together. If the person you are about to collide with is a senior student make adjustments. Like maybe taking a step sideways before you begin the kata when the assignments are given.
  14. Welcome to the forum. So what's your style?

Ananku? Starts with double down blocks to the sides then moving forward with side blocks into center punches? Shift into kokutsu dachi/shuto over head shuto strike into a center kick?
  18. I would like to add some tai chi or Pak ua.
  19. Welcome to the forum.
  20. Nice Patrick thanks. One is sitting as my wall paper now.
  21. At my second brown belt test (1st kyu) I was one of the few people who was not throwing up. There was some kind of a bug invading the ranks and after the first kid let go oh wow did the barf flow. Just go with it. Pretend test is just another class. There is no trick to being in front of people. Just do it.
  22. Remember that if you fall just get up and keep going. That is what I did at my brown belt test.
  23. Welcome to the forum.
  24. Shoulder injuries in my experience are a major lingering problem. You will really learn the importance of not overextending your punches or torqueing funny from the shoulders doing choku tsuki punching drills or you will continue to feel the shoulders. Try looking at the rotator cuff thread for links.
  25. Congrats to the birthaday and the anniversary. I just realized Christie had her babies on labor day. How fitting.
