  1. The purpose of the martial arts turns into what ever each serious student wants in to for their own personal enrichment. Self defense, spritual growth, physical developement all sound good but it is when each person makes it their own that it really becomes something special for them.
  2. This topic will continue to come up as long as there are martial arts students who think about what they are doing, why they are doing it and how what they do compares to what others do. As a participant I can speak from experience as an older student and as a physically handicapped student. When I tested I did the same requirements as everyone else testing for the same ranks and I did them successfully. And when I switched associations and retested I did more than the other students did. (I didn't find that out until later) I earned my black belt and my nidan belt in my primary style. And I wore my black eye from my nidan test proudly. (I missed a headblock on my blind side) I am not posting to defend myself. Just to remind all of us that every situation is different. There are some with belts who really should not have them. And there are some without belts who really should have them. Every one is an indiviual in an individual situation. Age and condition are just a small part of the total package.
  3. I like the way she thinks. Would you believe I have a white belt with my name on it I wear when I feel the need to do extra training in a gi?
  4. Seems like just a few weeks ago it was 500.
  5. The only thing that may be a drawback at first is if your hearts desire is to work with nunchaku. Make sure you have the foam ones. After you whack yourselves a few times with those you will know why not to use the wooden ones until your coordination improves.
  6. I used to knock my glasses across the room doing headblocks when I first started. Karate was very, very good for my coordination. You may progress slower than some of your classmates if you are extremely uncoordinated but don't let that stop you from giving it a go.
  7. Welcome to the forum.
  8. I have a super heavy weight macho gi. I like it a lot. They soften up a lot with wear. At first I thought it felt like working out in sweats. But as I got used to it I realized the loose baggy cotton did not stick to me any thing like sweats.
  9. Do any of you think this thread needs a bit of a revival for the newer among us?
  10. Well I also run a small club for cat lovers.

  15. Sorry I did a bit of a look and didn't see much either. Your best bet would be to just go and ask.
  16. The first test is an eye opening exeprience for all of us. We may have seen a test before but our test is different. Get a good nights sleep two nights before the test in case nerves keep you up the night before. Just do the best you can. It is okay if you make a mistake. Yes, I said it is okay if you make a mistake. Even if you fall on the floor just get up and keep going. Most tests you get a second chance to correct your errors. This test will be a huge learning experience for you. Make the most of it. Think of it as just a new kind of class.
  17. I have to admit I am at a loss for words too. It is impressive but a bit odd as well.
  18. LOL Monkeygirl. Such words of wisdom. Do work hard between now and then.
  19. Punching out a candle flame is also and effective method of increasing punching speed.
