  1. I did Shotokan in high school for 2 years before I stopped once I joined the Army. 33 years later I started again, really, really wish that I had re-started alot earlier....
  2. Seriously brewed beer at home back in the 80's when it was really popular, 50 litres every 5 days. Was fun to make and fun to drink........ Like wine, however, I have mellowed with age.................
  3. Welcome to the KF!
  4. Merino is the ultimate, they should be ok, if you don't do alot of grappling...
  5. We do Sanchin more often with eyes closed than with them open.
  6. I notice in the video that beardy disrespected the demo guy quite rudely. When introduced he replied "Whatever". So demo guy decided to dig his heels in. Looks like that type of dojo with a LOT of testosterone flowing....
  7. Hollywood, ruining cool stories for money by: "Based on true events"(Very loosely), since forever...............
  8. I see there is a new movie soon to be released, centred around his fight with Wong Jack Man. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birth_of_the_Dragon Although his daughter is already criticizing it as not being accurate .
  9. Holy cow that was funny. Love the reversal. I will have to send this to my daughter. He has a whole series, look up the one "How to be offended" also very good.
  10. "Fudge" is an oldie, but a goodie also..........
  11. Your still doing good Sensei, you have the self motivation. 80 pounds is a LOT! So you are still better off than before. See the Cardiologist, see what he says and go from there.
  12. While I may use foul language sometimes, I feel that it would be very disrespectful to use it in the dojo and I consciously refrain from doing so.
  13. Totally agree, whether we like it or not biology beats "equality" every time! I think that in general it would take a very experienced woman to take down a guy in a slug fest type fight. No rule might be different tho, youtube Master Ken's "100 ways to attack the groin"..................
  14. Thanks, interesting how they measure per student..... We generally train altogether on a general night. so plenty of kids at the back (10+), each kyu taking a seperate line during the greet, warm up and katas/line work. (the first hour of a 2 hour session) 5m is a pretty high stud height, depending on the pitch of the roof, maybe the walls could be 2.8 or 3m heading to a 5m ridgeline. Bo training should be done in the middle of the floor lol....
  15. I'm with you there Lupin, No ponytail for me either. straight out brawl they have to be a disadvange, mind you if there are weapons involved (chairs, bottles etc), having no hair at all is going to cost you also.....
  16. Just looking for educated opinions on ideal floor size and ceiling height for 25-30 students, also based on your dimensions and number of people training where would the Shinzen go? middle of the long side or the short side. Cieling height needs to consider training with Bo. You are helping me with a pet project I am starting on...... If the project progresses there will a lot more questions after this one lol......
  17. I find medium/heavy contact is actually better for me at this stage of training, I think that I am more free to use more speed and block more effectively than trying to use "pull my punches" type techniques. As somebody mentioned, once you have taken a few heavier shots, you realise that it's not the end of the world.
  18. Martial artists and tattoos Are tattoos intimidating? Some are yes, most Facial tattoos are probably designed to intimidate, whether they do or not is up to you. Are tattoos a demonstration of enduring pain? I don't believe so, although they do hurt somewhat to get, but I think most people do not consider the pain when looking at or considering getting a tattoo. Are tatoos becoming an ever increasing fad. Yes, but in some cultures (Like here in New Zealand), they have been a part of the culture for centuries and have meaning and genuine significance. As a visual artist, I don't have tattoos or care to have any. OK, it's a very personal thing (Or, it should be) Tattoos in Japan have had a special significance and place in their culture for martial artists, now the trend has hit the Western world as well. Agreed, again, "tribal" style tattoos are popular, here in New Zealand, they describe your family lineage and is something not to be taken lightly. Google " Ta moko" and check out some of the full face tattoos.... Where and how many tattoos do you have? I have 2 on my arms from my youth (19 years old) Why do you have tattoos? Expression I guess, youthful commitment to an idea Would I consider an MA tattoo, maybe, but it would have to be in consultation with my karate seniors and checked by a fluent Japanese speaker!
  19. Bit too showy for me, surprised that such a high rank grading would be so "public"..........
  20. Welcome Antonio!!
  21. Happy Birthday JR, same day as my daughter BTW,
  22. There is a pretty good section in this book on the subject which goes into considerable detail, albiet, it is his own educated opinion: https://www.amazon.com/Bible-Karate-Bubishi-Patrick-McCarthy/dp/0804820155 If you get the book, make sure it's the new revised edition.
  23. Welcome, and 38 is a great age to start in MA!
  24. I have been dropping my old belts over a Sai from a set that I don't use anymore. It's in my spare room somewhere...
