I know there's some rule that you need to respect higher ranks. In my opinion respect is something that is earned. I respect everyone that is a higher rank, but sometimes I think, do they really deserve it just because of a rank? I think that the anyone, not just higher ranks, should prove that they deserve the respect. Because of a lack of respect for seniors in our dojo, our instructor has made us bow the rank above us before class ends. For example, I'm a striped orange belt. At the end of class, I need to say "Bow Green Belt." Which is the belt after mine. We are permanently doing this. I do not mind this at all, but just wondering whether any other orginizations did this? What is your opinion on the respect of higher ranks.

We spar with just headgear, hand and feet pads -
Welcome to KF! I don't do Shito Ryu but nice to see soneone who does. A lot of people on this forum take it.

You need to block first because karate is self defense. You never initiate the first attack.

I am really skinny and weak. I can't even do a push up. I started Tang Soo Do last year and I'm testing for a green belt on Friday. My form 5 I need to test for this belt was hard, but I got it now. I don't have any friends outside of karate. All my friends I met through martial arts. I really like taking class and it's helping my self confidence. There are two people who are orange belts that tell me I'm horrible and don't deserve my rank. Those two people are a lower rank than me. I learned to ignore them. The reason I wanted to start taking karate was because of past experiences with bullies. I transferred school districtst and now I am doing better. In the future, I hop to become a black belt of Tang Soo Do. I am working my way towards that goal.

It depends on the student. I know many dan ranks in our dojo but they still train here with the master.

I think classes should be longer because you can have it divided into forms and basics and sparring.

I would say to fight. However I unwillingly seem to run away when it comes to fighting

My instructor says we can spar, no matter what rank they are. When you are a white belt, he always asks you if you think you are ready to spar. If they say no then they wait until the next class we spar to see if they changed their minds. If they say yes, then of course they spar. I see several white belts that are really good.

Teaching kids martial arts who are under 5yo
FangPwnsAll7 replied to RJCKarate's topic in Instructors and School Owners
5 year olds aren't really ready to learn any type of martial art in my honest opinion. They usually don't know left from right like Tempest said. Martial arts is for self defense only and they need to actually understand what they are learning. My instructor teaches anyone of any age as long as they can talk and move. Fortunately, some of the younger students at our dojo are really good. The only thing that confuses me is the 5 year old black belt we have. I don't know, maybe he skipped belts or he is really good? -

My dojo costs $110 a month. If you pay by a 6 month or 1 year, you get a discount of I think 15%.

The terror of a new Kata...

I love learning new forms. Today I'm working on form 6. It looks easier than the fifth form too.
