For some reason, folks think that fll contact means full power. Ridiculous! Most Thais in Thailand spar pretty lightly. They make their living that way,so why affect the way a person makes a living. I think that people are filled with the mystique of full contact. I grew up and fought bare knuckle my entire life. It can hurt, but is important psychologically. Practice full body striking, and let your intensity increase as your skill level does.

Do you guys know what an oil check is? If not, I will NOT elaborate. If so, you know that it works.

Unfotunately, most "Capoeira" has ben filtered down to ethnice dance in most places. In the old days, Capoeira also had a great deal of groundfighting called Ungala. Nowadays the ginga and all of that are just remnants of the dancy stuff that is so common. Capoeira actually is really gritty. I mean the real kind. Lateef from the protectors is one of the few guys who knows the real stuff. He showed the dance stuff in the movies. Kind of like the whirling TKD kicks in movies. They look cool, but they are not used in fighting.

Eddie Bravo's rubber guard
kenpo4life replied to danbong's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I have tried some of it. Not as effective as he would like it to be. BTW, not to be a smarty pants, but a Antonio Schembri and a few others used it long before Bravo made a name out of it. -
Most technical street fight ever
kenpo4life replied to cross's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
I disagre with one main point here. This was NOT a streetfight. It was an MMA contest on concrete. Everyone there knew that there were cameras there. Also they knew that nobody was going to let one of the fighters get stomped to death. In real fights you have no such guarantee or safeguards. I agree that this typified the attitudes of many MMA practitioners. But to call it a streetfight is a stretch. But it does show the glaring ways that MMA is not a reality based system. -
10 most common styles of MA
kenpo4life replied to KamasandSais's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
bjj should not be on the list. It helped to develop a cult following, but it really does not repesent much of the MA world. Krav neither -
training @ black belt level

My training intensified. Your shodan is like learning the alphabet. After that, you have to make sentences. -

BJJ promotions
kenpo4life replied to KNOCKuOUT's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I think that schools should have knowledge and performance criteria. Some of the best schooling I received came from a blue belt who knew how to teach. But then as you begin to roll, you will begin to be able to hang with folks the next belt up. Maybe not beat, but hang with and catch every blue moon. For an excellent example of expectations for promotion, check out Roy Harris's site. Top notch. -

The problem is that boxing has too many "titles" Plus a lot of phony weight classes. Boxing in the golden days was more than just the boxing. It was the clash of personalities. All of the great matches from the old days were a gala spectacle. Hagler, Hearns, Foreman,Ali,Chavez,Whitaker and the rest all had a true rival. The fake WWE style stuff in MMA is not real rivalry. Plus, boxing is NOT fading. Most people who watch boxing are not true fans. They just watch the huge fights like Floyd vs Oscar. They dont even know B hopkins, Winky,Shane or Cotto. Mainstream boxing may be slipping for now, but that has always happened in boxing.

Okay, after 13 years on the mat, here is my take Forget the double. Changing levels on concrete or ashpalt can do bad things to your knees. Use a Greco_Roman, Judo or Thai clinch to bring it to the ground. Elbows are likely a good option from the top although one can be rolled easily. Especially since most schools dont allow elbows in practice Kimuras can be good, but in my experience, most people dont have what it takes mentally to pop an arm. They are often so far removed from the mindset that they wont be able to muster it in a fight. Practice does NOT make perfect. PERFECT practice makes perfect. Same with RNC, most people expect the tap when they lock it in. They are not prepared to see or hear a person slobbering and choking and whatnot. Leglocks are quick but often engage too many body parts of yours in a street fight. Expect that your opponent has a friend nearby

How long are the classes you teach?
kenpo4life replied to bushido_man96's topic in Instructors and School Owners
About 75 minutes for my kickboxing classes for conditioning. 90 minutes for all the others. -
I read once that 68% of all people quitting is because of perceiced indifference. In other words, most people think that nbody cares whether they come or not. Treat your school like a learning center where everyone is valued, and you will have a much better retention.

Thanks a lot guys. I am trying to implement some of these changes right now!
