  1. Read stretching scientifically by Thomas Kurtz
  2. Read the book Guerilla Marketing. IT is a classic, and will help big time!
  3. Rocky Marciano was a good fighter. He also ducked quite a few guys in his career. He fought Loius way past Joe's prime, when he could have fought him soone. He was a good fighter, but not the greatest, as his record is padded with kuckleheads. I say gimme Hagler any day. He fought anyone, no glitz, no glamour, just quiet Ko's. I also loved Ali because he fought for a cause. He talked trash, but was unbeatable in his prime
  4. Unbelievable! They are NOT highly incompatible. I dont know where you guys train, but I learned full contact the whole time. People think that only MT guys kick the legs or use elbows. Fact is, there are no techniques relegated to only one style. You just have to know the right tool for the job. It is a better idea to parry or catch a punch in the ring, but those have limits as well. I have trained bare-knuckle every day of my life for 25 years, and I know the value of both. For example, bobbing and weaving is great in boxing. Not so good in MT or bare-knuckle matches where you clinch and knee. I would parry and punch if I can, but you have to know when to block. I have blocked a tire iron before. Would you guys have tried to parry it?
  5. I laugh when I hear people say that judo relies on the gi. Most moves do, like bjj, but without the gi, a real judo school is lot like Greco Roman
  6. I have two words for you my small friend, Royler Gracie!! Maybe one more, Shaolin, Nope got a couple more B J P E N N . Point is, use your advantages in speed and fluidity.
  7. Read the books by Thomas Kurtz, Stretching Scientifically. It helps a LOT
  8. Capoeira has many different stlyes, like karate. It has ground-fighting, and a whole lot of nasty tricks. There are mcdojos in every art, and like TKD, a lot of the essence of the art has been lost in its "popularization" I once saw a video on the Discovery channel of some WICKED throws, chokes, and in-fighting. It is most popular as a dance now, as TKD and Judo as sports, but hell, the real stuff is dirty. To answer the question, YES the real stuff is ugly. For all you MA historians out there, check out an old Black Belt mag article called the " Black Power of Capoeira"
  9. TJS, You said that 95% of fighters crosstrain in bjj. Maybe. But the same number of people train in a striking art as well.
  10. Paolung, DO you work out with Sifu Dave Lacey? my friend used to a while back. He is quite a guy!
  11. Tjs, Tell saku, or don frye or a bunch of others who have pounded bjj guys into powder that they will get beat. Bjj is not invincible, formidable yes, invincible no. I have done sombo for 10 years, and you would be amazed how often I have tapped bjj guys with leglocks
  12. They didnt shite themselves, they said why fight for chump change, when I can keep getting millions?
  13. Get Roy Harris takedown from the knees video, VERY GOOD
  14. I think that I can add more light on this subject, having asked a LOT of bjj teachers the same thing. BJJ is like the old-school judo, as it is/was practiced at the kosen schools. If you notice, everything that the Brazilians do has a japanese name. Kimura/Ude-garami, triangulo/sankaku jime. omoplata/ hiza gatame etc. When Judo was tainted, and became more focused on the Olympic path, Kano was upset. HE was once quoted as saying" This is NOT the judo that I created" The difference between the old school judo/bjj is the TRANSITIONS. They are the same holds and stuff, but the schools that focused equally on tachiwaza have a greater over all skill, more balanced between standing moves, and ground ones. BJJ was once strictly for self-defense. But for the non-fighting segment of society, sport bjj was created. That is where some refinements in the guard have come about. If you read some old judo books, Best Judo, Judo in action/ grappling techniques, you will see the exact same thing that we call bjj
  15. Guys, I think that the moves that people practice in the dojo DO work, but only in the appropriate context. If the guys is wearing a thin long sleeve for example, dont try to use it to throw. Use it to add momentum to a foot sweep or leg reap. That in my opinion is the most overlooked aspect of judo
  16. Use basic judo throws, like ogoshi, or some footsweeps.
  17. Guys, Once someone told me only 3 arts are useful against multiple attackers: Run-Fu, Gun-Fu, and Car-Fu But in regards to bjj, Rigan Machado once told me that he would try to run, or use basic throws to put the guys down hard on their heads. As he is one of the most respected teacher of bjj, I would say that if you cant throw them, RUN!
  18. For crying out loud!!! Stop with the style stuff!!! GO WITH THE BETTER INSTRUCTOR! Not every practitioner of a style is good. QUALITY INSTRUCTORS are most important.
  19. I personally spar with groin kicks all the time. We do wear a cup obviously. See, and I dont mean to pick on the TKD folks and other high kickers, you can really learn the impracticality of some moves shen it exposes your groin in the process. I have seen a lot of really good high kickers lose a lot of their arsenal because they knew that the potential to get kicked in the nay-nays was available. I think WAY too many martial artists over-rely on kicks. I say that in jeans, or high heels, or a skirt or something, your hands are your mos practical solution.
  20. If you are having trouble meeting a woman it may have something to do with the fact that you call them chicks.
  21. I think that the shoot is easier to do whether or not the person is sweaty. If a person is totally dry, and they never after because of the warm up sweat, traditonal throws work well. But the double doesnt require the same type of prelim clinch.
  22. Kick chick, TKD is the most popular art in the US. Therefore your mcdojo to "real" school ratio is going to be higher. That is all. I mean where I live everyone "does" TKD and not a single one I have seen live it. I think that people fail to realize that the methods of old were contemporary for their time, but the reality of fighting methods have changed. Like the old masters, we need to stop moaning about style and develop what we have found to be effective.
  23. MT fighter, No disrespect, but to say that kata is useless is showing a bit of immaturity. kata is a library of techniques. While we do not fight that way, it is also a way to show respect for those who fought, often to the death, so that we have a system to study today. Painters today do not use the same medium as MIchaelangelo, but nobody in the art world disrespects the Sistine Chapel. Think about it man.
  24. I still trip out when I hear people refer to JKD as a style. IT is a CONCEPT. Anys style can be JKD. Lee stated that an art should be supple and fit the individual, not stick to a particular outdated format.
  25. Full-contact is not an art but a training method. A lot os schools do it. Muay Thai, kenpo, kyokushin, goju, the list goes on. A lot of American schools dont do it however, because it hurts
