  1. Welcome!
  2. Our area was just downgraded as the wind is at 30mph, gusts expected to stay under 50. Not a lot of rain, although last night we got pounded for an hour at 3 am. Looks like my area dodged a major bullet.
  3. Well we have a category 4 hurricane across the state. Thankfully West Palm Beach is only getting the feeder bands and not the eye. The last reported winds were 145 mph. We are under a tropical storm watch with winds expected under 74 mph.
  4. Good, and you have to realize that you live in a major city. Prices tend to be higher than in rural areas. Good luck.
  5. Welcome and enjoy the forums. They may not stock the size you need. As far as little people, look around and step carefully.
  6. This is the only one for me.
  7. Welcome!
  8. I'm with Monkeygirl as I see nothing wrong working out with gi pants and a tee, especially if you are relatively alone. The whole deal though, that's another story. I remember seeing a mom and her son at the ballpark last year, both of them dressed in full gi with their belts, watching a baseball game. Even I thought that they were dorks.
  9. Welcome back. So does Cleveland rock? Say hi to Drew.
  10. Swimming on land or running in water? I'll say swimming on land is a better workout than running in the water. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

    Thank you

Congrats. You have passed an even bigger test than just your brown belt!
  12. Here's the Gatorade thread. http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=13590
  13. Without a doubt, swimming a mile is a better workout. My reasoning is that the average person can run a mile in 8-10 minutes and that same person would take 25-30 minutes swimming a mile. You spend more time with an elevated heart rate swimming a mile than you do running a mile. Now, given equal times like 30 minutes versus 30 minutes I pick running. I feel like a get a better workout and have an easier time breathing. Here is a link that demonstrates that running burns more calories. http://www.pueblo.gsa.gov/cic_text/health/exercise-heart/page3.htm I don't see a problem with your swimming for cardio. If you enjoy it why stop? In other words, if it's not broken don't fix it.
  14. Let's see.....chokes, arm bars, joint locks, submission holds.....basically all the fun stuff.
  15. "Step away from the mouth, slowly put the attitude down". At least you recognize what you are doing so that you have a chance to stop before you get totally annoying and get spoken to.
  16. My kempo comes from the Pesare - Cerio - Villari lineage. Delta, the term "kempos" I picked up at my dojo. While we have set combinations to learn, a "kempo" is the term used for a self defense manuever that you come up with. For example, the instructor may say "Come up with a kempo that you could use against a front punch. Now modify that series to defend against a hook punch." Etc.... They usually are 2 (basic) to 7 (advanced) techniques, in kempo fashion, strung together to take care of a situation and their variations.
  17. This is sounding familiar. I do this as well from general concepts and put them together to do combinations or "kempos". Then l refine and adapt for a variety of situations. Could this be the start for the Kenpo/Kempo section at KF?
  18. Yes, at least in the systems that I have heard of: Shaolin Kempo, Kajukenbo, American Kenpo
  19. Welcome to KF!
  20. I was working a hunch! I knew it was only a matter of time. Go for it.
  21. Once you get your heart rate up you get into the training state, you start to burn calories and build cardiovascular endurance. This usually occurs after the first five minutes of exercise. Your heart rate needs to be at an approximate range of 110-165 beats per minute depending on your age. Check out this link for your range. http://www.active.com/calculators/heartrate_calc_togo.cfm Oh, and running in place is not more strenuous than actual running, but it is better than sitting on the couch. Your feet may be hurting for a lot of reasons. You may be putting a lot of stress on your feet because running in place is not walking or running, i.e. there is no stride, just an up and down pounding. Be sure to wear good shoes and you may want to consider jumping rope if you are house bound.
  22. Enlightened in the sandwich shop. Hmmm, you pegged me with the height but you have me by 10 pounds, but I can relate. Truely, your confidence in your being has enabled you to walk among men without fear or intimidation. Liberating is the right word. BTW, what kind of sandwich did you get?
  23. When there is a will there is a way. Good post.
  24. I wear the Asics shoes. Their mid-range shoes fit well and last quite a while.
  25. So KKMom, you have quite the interest. Do you have any plans to start training? Many here have started this way.
