  1. Welcome.
  2. Drunken, you are right in that many kenpo/kempo schools operate with that kind of method, but so do other styles. To answer the original question about Kajukenbo being classified as kempo is because in the family tree, the style that came before and the styles after are mostly referred to as kempo/kenpo. Emperado's contibution to the art was in Kempo, along with the other co-founders bringing in aspects of judo, jui-jitsu, karate, and chinese boxing.
  3. Both can, as many styles of kempo/kenpo can be traced through Chow (Chinese Kara-Ho Kempo). Check out this link for tracing certain lineages of kempo/kenpo. Some have more Chinese influence than others and add terms like Shaolin or Chinese to denote that. http://www.urbin.net/EWW/MA/KF/famtrees.html
  4. This is often associated with steroid use.
  5. You should ice it four times a day for 15 minutes each time. Keep taking the anti-inflams and stay off of it for three days. If you don't feel any better get to the doc. By going to class, you may be putting pressure on the strain and not letting it heal. The ice is very important to reduce swelling. Disclaimer: I am not a doctor and I do not play one on TV. Good luck.
  6. My first style had white, green, brown and black. Each colored level had one stripe. My current system has white, yellow, orange, purple, blue, green, brown, and black. There are stripes at blue, green and brown. I think that 4-6 colored levels is ideal. One mcdojo that I visited had 22 belts for their kids program. I thought that was extreme, but I guess that they must of tested every other week as there were several 12 year black belts (don't get me going on this). When the instructor talked to me he imediately went into his "pitch". I felt like he was trying to sell me an extended warranty for a car. He wouldn't let up and I finally just walked out.
  7. nananananananananaBATMAN! BIFF! POW! SLAM!nanananananananaBATMAN! Well, it worked for me when I was seven.
  8. Like CloudDragon, I also do not like those iron clad contracts. My rule is if you feel like you are buying a car, run! Contracts are OK if there are benefits for both parties and they are fair.
  9. OK, I tried it and beat it the first try. I guess the old left, right, left, right, etc. method is just too sophisticated for advanced computer games. Of course it took my seven more times to figure out how I did it the first time.
  10. Kicks, just tell them what is appropriate or just suffer while you wrestle with scantily clad women. OK, another serious violation would be wearing ninja boots to the mall (unless you wanted to "sneak up on the good deals").
  11. Leave the ninja boots at home. I don't think you even wear shoes while in the gym. A shorts and tank should do it. Call ahead to see what the protocol is.
  12. Pray! Just kidding, but you have to avoid him getting his hands on you. Learn to keep distance and to avoid any techniques where you can lose your balance or have it taken from you quickly (ie roundhouse kick to the head or an overextended punch). If he does shoot, learn to sprawl, use your elbows and forearms and deflect his attempts. The best advice is to do as WW said and learn some basic grappling and counters.
  13. You're assuming that she wears them!
  14. Welcome and good luck in your search.
  15. Welcome to KF!
  16. Oh my! OK, here's another don't: Camouflage! Especially ripped up into little strips and tied around the biceps, while performing moves to the song "He's a maniac, maniac..."
  17. Welcome Alvin. You have nothing to worry about. 8 point is the basic blocking system consisting of 2 outside blocks, l and r, 2 inside blocks, 2 over head, and 2 downward blocks. Pinan 1 is the basic form of downward blocks combined with front punches all flowing in the basic letter "I" shape. If you need anymore PM me, but you will pick this up quick in class, especially since you have experience. Good luck.
  18. I have been following a few threads on wearing gis in and out of the dojo. It got me thinking about making a list about what are some of the things that serious martial artists should never wear. I thought this could be a tongue and cheek kind of topic, but it is legit as I'm sure that some of your examples are based on real experiences. So the first item that a serious MA should never wear is: A replica Karate Kid Headband!
  19. So who really invented flash? Good point Lucky.
  20. Just remember to train hard and stay focused. Good luck.
  21. I did this playing football in high school (many years ago) but I remember it clearly because it was the most annoying injury I ever had. I jammed my thumb early on and it would be OK after a week or two then bam, it would get jammed again. I think I played like this the entire season. Once the season was over, and it healed without having the stress on it, and I was fine. It was just hard to get it to 100% when I was doing an activity where it was getting banged around a lot. I tried ice but the only thing that helped in the end was to avoid any contact for 3-4 weeks.
  22. You should be a little stiff/sore after (next day or two) a good workout if you are using muscles that you haven't used in a while, or if you worked them a little harder than usual. Lats can be stretched during punching drills, especially if you haven't warmed up properly/stretched, or if you do more than normal (like on a test). I seem to get tight in the forearms, neck, etc. after a good grappling workout. I like the feeling because I know that I worked hard to get there.
  23. Welcome to KF.
