I'm with Rich on this one. I've read some running articles on how some people run and get right into a cold bath to prevent inflamation. In fact the guy who won the silver in the marathon, Meb, does his training and then wades into an ice cold river for twenty minutes or so. I guess this would serve the same purpose as an athlete immediately icing a body part. I don't think that taking a normal bath would be a problem. I would suggest using soap.

Nooooooo! Anything but the Button of Shame!

One thing you will start learning is how to move your center to generate power. This can be done a number of ways from the basic to the advanced. Using direction, twisting, rising and sinking, angles, footwork, circular theory, yin type blocking, expansion, etc., and combining these concepts (and others I'm sure I left out) to generate power. You will move from using the muscles to using body structure, movement, and momentum to generate efficient power. Hang in there for a while and you will start seeing the difference as you move into a "softer" world. BTW, our school encourages Kiai to teach students to breath and emphasize but it was no where near the Shotakan experience that I had in college.

These are the guys you don't mess with (remember that kenpoists wear black, so a grey gi with a grey belt means he's got some experience or is just really bad with the washer and dryer). I don't care for really young black belts but not enough to regulate it. IMO, 16 seems to be a good minimum age.

Which martial art is for me.
Red J replied to Beiner's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
47MM could you elaborate on this point? What systems and methods in particular? Thanks. -
I'm glad you guys did well. My brother in Panama City Beach told me that his wife's restaurant got hit by a tornado and it and two other restaurants are no longer. We are having an active season.

Not to confuse you more but some groups splintered from kenpo and use kempo and vice-versa. To me it's like color = colour. What's the difference when you are painting unless you enjoy getting hung up on semantics, which is where the m/n debate seems to go from time to time in the kempo/kenpo world. I say train hard no matter what you call it.

in one, want another...
Red J replied to Type_0's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I suggest something with a grappling base like submission wrestling or BJJ. It will compliment your current training well. -
Trying to get started.
Red J replied to caturpilar's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
You are def not too old, however, you want to be smart and not do something that you will regret when you are older...like 30! There are plenty of ways to train that are safe. Talk to a doc if you need to. You may want to limit exposure to this area by leaving out the shin kicks or anything else that could injure that area. I don't know about you, but I have to work for a living. -
I picked Dual. I incorporate Kempo with a moderate dose of grappling into one system.

Wrestling Tips, Anyone?
Red J replied to youremean's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
If you want to make the team you need to be in shape. You might want to start running. -
Hello and welcome. Interesting picture. Tropical Ninja?

It's a must see! Two thumbs up.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Kicks, have you evacuated yet? I heard that 1 million people in the New Orleans area just got the order to move. Good luck and keep us posted if you have internet access.

Well they are pronounced the same "kempo". I don't know the translation rules but it is accepted that either an "N" or "M" will suffice. Literally translated it means "Fist Law" or "Law of the Fist". The major American kenpo/kempo systems can trace their lineages to Hawaii to William K. S. Chow (Kara-Ho Kempo). From him we get American Kenpo, Kajukenbo, Shaolin Kempo, Shaolin Kenpo, Tracy Kenpo and many more. Check out this link for a more detailed perspective. http://www.urbin.net/EWW/MA/KF/

That's a few. I've seen David, Erin, Mitch, Irene and now Frances. Andrew was only 60 miles south and had hardly a breeze in Palm Beach but it sure leveled Homestead. Camille was a beast back in '69. I hope that Ivan backs down. We don't need another catastrophic storm. I just talked to my brother in Panama City Beach and they are getting the evacuation order tomorrow morning. Stay safe.

blocks and counters for backkick in sparring
Red J replied to dear john's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
One thing to work on is not to "telegraph" your moves. It sounds like he is sitting back waiting for you to give him an opening. The obvious opening being when you shift your weight to one leg he moves in and closes the deal. He could also do this if you side step and your steps are too big. Anytime you commit your weight you are vulnerable. You could try the fakes and bait him or try to let him give you an opening. Of course, like TSD said, he is the master and should be able to hit you at will. -
Hapkido or Prankration
Red J replied to Blade3's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I agree. For what it's worth, Hapkido would be a style that I would investigate. I base this on the comments that I have read about on KF over the past two years on how it is a well rounded system. Good luck. -
Kicks, watch it carefully and be prepared. After getting smacked around by Frances for 3 days, I can tell you it was not fun, especially sitting in a hot house with no electricity. It is supposed to be downgraded to a 3 when it hits. Hopefully it stays clear of you. Good luck.
