  1. Sky, its been a while, how about an update?
  2. And this is a bad thing? She has done more reading than some college graduates have done and is learning Spanish. My question is did these books increase her reading and fluency or did it decrease it? I suspect it increased it tremendously as re-reading the first three or four books is quite a feat, especially for a youngster living in a playstation world.
  3. Welcome. Practice at home as much as you can. The streching and conditioning will pay off as you will seem to be "passing" some of your counterparts that do not practice. Keep us posted and good luck.
  4. Yah, you better hope that they learn to read, especially since there the ones that will be taken care of you when you're in the nursing home. Let's see, what did his prescription say?
  5. I'm sorry to have pulled you away from the doughnut shop... I must warn you, my hands are registered weapons with the FBI... Shouldn't you be out solving a real crime?... [i don't know how the guys in uniform maintain their composure because I'm sure they've heard them all while making routine stops.]
  6. WW - I thought it referred to your ability to block with your face...
  7. Last night I went to a neighboring dojo to try a class. By the end of the night I had met every single person in the class. Even though I wasn't a regular, I was welcomed. I learned a few things and some people learned a few things from me. MA people by and large do have a bond through participation in MA.
  8. This is what I got out of the article along with some other points that you guys mentioned.
  9. Entertaining link. Thanks for posting.
  10. I wouldn't recommend it.
  11. I can't think of any "children's" book that has really caught on like the Harry Potter books. They have inspired a new generation of readers like no other book has. They have done much as far as bringing back reading as a legitimate form of entertainment. It has been reported that game cubes and playstations have been turned off in favor of reading. Unheard of.... I have read the books and enjoy talking to my kids about the books and the movies. The new release has created some excitement in our house.
  12. Welcome MTFreak. Great handle.
  13. Welcome.
  14. My advice is to start moving. If you can't do many, then do some. Serious running may be out but you can walk. Start with 20 minutes per day and work up to 45 minutes per day. Not at all, but it is up to you so start today. Let us know how you do. Your success will be inspiring to others who don't have the courage to ask.
  15. Welcome back!
  16. WW - What do you mean by passive? I am also not an advocate for MA under 7 or 8 years old. Just my two cents...
  17. Me too. I vote for Delta1 to moderate a new kenpo/kempo category for KF!
  18. I guess it matters by what you mean by prove it. Mike Tyson was coached by Cus D'Amato (who had coached Floyd Patterson many years before that) and Cus was not in any shape to prove anything to Mike. That had nothing to do with his ability to produce champions. With the "prove" theory you would have most people retiring from teaching as they move out of their physical primes. Of course there are more ways to prove something than by demonstrating it personally. Now granted, I could have totally taken your statement out of context and put words in your mouth just to keep this thread alive. I understand what I think you mean which is that it is desirable to have someone who has the knowledge and can apply it, therefore validating the techniques as they teach. Or something like that.
  19. I don't have a problem calling my instructor Sensei or his instructor Master inside the dojo. Outside of the dojo I address them by their first names. If I didn't know them then I would say Mr. I don't think that it is an ego thing. It is more a sign of respect from the students simular to when you are in school or go to a Dr.'s office. I have never heard either one of them correct someone who didn't use a title and I have heard people call them by their first names. They always introduce themselves without titles. Of course when they speak of their instructors they always say Master or Mr. It is the culture of the school. When I trained with my first sensei a few years back, it was always on a first name basis. I don't think that it made any difference to how I approached training or the instruction. I don't get hung up on titles because at the school that I train at the teachers are not attached to egos and I am there to learn.
  20. I wonder if you played this to a prisoner to get them to a confession if it would be considered torture?
  21. I have a pair of Century Middleweights. They have a lot of polyester and are pretty tough for middleweight pants. They are not my first choice but they are adequate. They don't breath that well but they are durable. They are black so I can't address the "see through" issue.
  22. Monkeygirl: I really enjoyed your writing. You have something a lot of people don't have, insight and perspective. You will carry these lessons with you and they will help shape your life. Good luck on your last year of high school. Remember to be true to yourself. You will find yourself and your true friends. Stay on the path.....
  23. When I first started I didn't care for it. I convinced myself it would make me a better martial artist. I really thought it would help me on tests to get through the tough physical/mental challenges. So I started. My attitude was just like TDA has on his signature: "If you're going through hell, keep going." - Sir Winston Churchill Well the benefits have been worth it. When I start to run I try to get into a state of mind like mushin. I can definitely say that I can achieve this every time for some period of the run. It has really paid off cardio wise as well as I rarely "suck wind" in class. It just took a little perseverance.
  24. Welcome to KF.
  25. I remember some of the "characters" at my university. Just chalk him up to the unique educational experience that only an institution of higher learning can bring.
