  1. It sounds like a great learning experience to me. The better the person, the more you can learn. Eat it up while you have the opportunity.
  2. It appears that he has let his 9 year old bird go.....metaphorically speaking, of course. I wonder if he will ever finish his book.....
  3. Interval training yes, but I don't consider the following quote to be interval training and I would suggest that the "evidence" that you refer to is not conducted this crudely. Interval training in running is calculated, measured, and takes into consideration working your cardio at an accelerated rate. Running until you can't doesn't quite fit the bill. For a good description of how to run for a variety of reasons go to: http://www.runnersworld.com/home/0,1300,1-51,FF.html Here's another link for an interval workout for boxing: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/ss11.htm
  4. This one I make sure not to finish. It doesn't take much to "pop" the elbow.
  5. Jumprope: Get a leather one with ballbearings. My #1 item.....a good pair of running shoes.
  6. Can we put this last line to music...hmmm.....let's see.....Wasting away again in burrito-ville.... On second thought, Margaritaville is just a little more appealing.
  7. http://members.tripod.com/beyondthereef__1/tigerman.html Here is just one (of the many) hits that I received as the result of an internet search. Apparently, the king trained for up to 19 years. One for the money....
  8. "Thank you, thank you very much" was Elvis's reply when he was presented with his new rank.
  9. I have been doing that for the last two years. It is a great help to go back and review techniques, concepts, etc.
  10. Delta1, when does the movie come out and who will play the three bares? I can't wait. Great imagination!
  11. I only had two Ociffer.
  12. Geez, that could have been a lot worse. I wonder how many they ended up selling after that mishap. So much for quality control.
  13. Oh, the poor toilet...
  14. Monthly, although there is a 6 month or 1 year option.
  15. I try to run three times a week. Twice during the week I run 3-5 miles and on the weekend I do 5-7 miles. Translation http://www.runnersweb.com/running/km_miles.html That's about 4.8 - 8km, and 8-11.3km. I can do 8km in about 45 minutes (9 minute miles/5:35 min km). You use minutes right? J/K I like the km version. It just sounds so much faster and farther.
  16. Not quite kung fu, but it does have the 5 animal influence. It came from the Kajukenbo lineage from Hawaii.
  17. This is exactly what I did upon my return to MA after a 15 year absence. I recognized that my Karate style was hard (although not as hard as Shotokan) and was really curious about softer styles. A few years ago, I visited some schools in my area and found a Shaolin Kempo school. They start off with hard and move to soft as you advance. This was a perfect mindset for me. I learned that I was stiff and predictable. Now I am learning how to be fluid and then adapt techniques, both hard and soft, as the situation requires. Once again, Delta1 gets a for his comments.
  18. We did basics on bricks today, stacked 2 high. Oh, and the bricks were turned sideways. We have also done the sparring drills with the bricks lengthways. Of course that doesn't hold a candle to a one fingered handstand.
  19. Good clip. He makes a good point using the chess analogy. I can see the value of training in isolation, ie learning a proper side kick, but to be effective, you have to be able to work it in a reality situation with the footwork, timing, and unpredictability of a real opponent. One of the drills we do at an advanced level is what we call "Kempo Sparring." It is basically using your skills to end a conflict with any means possible. You can punch, kick, take-down and grapple. You also get the chance to work your skills against people who have an advantage in one of the areas and you learn how to take those factors into account. This should prove to be an interesting thread. Thanks Delta1.
  20. You know it all comes down to value. If you feel that you are getting value for your money then go for it. I think the point of this thread was for you to try another place, compare, and make an informed decision. So far you are doing just that. Mixed schools don't necessarily cost more. I think what you are paying for is the location, facility, quality, etc. Some great places can be real "holes in the wall". My first dojo was a back yard! Good luck and keep us up-dated. BTW, did you ever clarify the 65 group lessons?
  21. i don't know... i think i'd be quite pleased if i walked out of a dojo feeling like i've just bought a 288gto. It wasn't buying the 288gto that I was referring to, it was looking at the payment book...
  22. Good link. Tiger is doing well with his professionally made, faster-than-life video production featuring his state of the art Olympic sized dojo. I guess that's why your contract is roughly $160 a week. Someone has to pay for all that jazz. My favorite quote is "I started Karate at five and got my black belt at eight." The kids must love it there. Now, what did you do?
  23. I recently heard the saying, "Be nice to the nerds, for you will probably end up working for one." How hard do you think Bill Gates is laughing?
