  1. Happy 2004! Train hard this year...
  2. I picked up my running (3-5 miles) and probably did MA for at least 45 minutes every morning. I enjoy the holidays because then I have the time to train the way I want to. Oh, and having 2 weeks off from work really helps.
  3. Too old? You should bring your dad with you. Get him back into it. Good luck.
  4. You may find a few, but you will find many kempo stylists. Most of the kempo styles in America are descendents of Hawaii and, in certain cases, direct descendents of Kajukenbo. Good luck in your journey.
  5. I think that those "grippers" are pretty cheap. You can squeeze and do reps or hold it. The same with the tennis balls. You can also use a bo staff and hold the end of it and swing it or wind a stick with a weight tied to it or...... You can do a lot of things that will give you a better grip. A better grip will help your grappling, seizing and control techniques.
  6. Yah, I know that it all started in the Shire, 2 movies ago. I guess that's where it needed to end.
  7. I really enjoyed the movie and will add it to the "collection" when the DVD comes out. Personally, I would have ended it at the scene at the castle when all bowed to the Hobbits. The next few minutes just seemed a little "Wizard of Oz"ish starting with the wakeup scene. I was impressed by the special effects and the twists and turns the plot took. Since I am no Tolkien expert, I had no idea what to expect. The time flew...
  8. They found him hiding in a hole...how fitting...Hopefully, his capture will have a settling impact on the region.
  9. #1 FACTOR...................Liability Insurance Premiums! More specifically, what kind of tournament are you referring to?
  10. I enjoyed finally seeing something MA related on TV. Maybe, if this show has any kind of ratings, they will explore into more MA subject shows. Not bad entertainment. The most impressive thing was the athleticism shown by the participants. I also thought that the "science" billing was misleading as it did turn into a documentary of a guy's attempted comeback.
  11. I just ordered a Century middle-heavyweight from Superfoots on sale for $39.99 (black). They also have the white ones for 29.99. I also see that the Century Ironman is now 69.99. I'll let you know how I like it being that I have never had a Century. My dream gi would also be one that doesn't need alterations....
  12. Congratulations on your "Turkey Trot" 5K. That's impressive for someone who didn't really train. Come on, you know you can find some time.....
  13. How about a progress report 360?
  14. When you do weights and shadowboxing, try not to extend your elbows all the way to a locked position. You may be putting undue stress on your joints.
  15. This is how I started. 1. Buy a good pair of shoes. 2. Set a time, say 30 minutes and try to run 1 mile and walk one. (Start with 3-4 times in a week.) 3. Increase it to 1.5 and walk. Do this a few times. 4. By the third week you should be able to do 3 in a row. By the time you can do 3 miles without too much strain, you may actually start to enjoy it. You will find a comfortable pace and you will see the benefits in your cardio during classes. For more ideas go to: https://www.runnersworld.com and click on the beginners section on how to get started. Good luck.
  16. Here's a good link for runners, novice and experienced. https://www.runnersworld.com They have a link for new runners. The site covers all the basics like shoes, schedules, and injuries. Its worth a look. Good luck.
  17. Agreed, Ice afterwards with an anti-inflam like Advil. It will get better. Also, make sure you are stretching properly and warmed up before you run.
  18. 3-5 miles, 3 days a week.
  19. I try to run 3-5 miles on non-class days (3 days) combined with stretching. I also practice forms twice a week. The running has improved my cardio so that I can concentrate on technique in sparring and grappling instead of thinking about how hard it is to huffing and puffing. Good topic.
  20. Have you ever "rested" in a Shaolin pose? They are extremely difficult poses to hold and require much strength and balance. They make sitting in a deep horse stance look easy. Ask your instructor...I think the answer may be a complete balance between the internal and external. Good Topic.
  21. DM, try this link. http://www.urbin.net/EWW/MA/KF/kempohistory.html
  22. The submissions come from Chin Na and Jiu Jutsu. Seizing, controlling, and immobolizing are important parts of the curriculum. They are included in the basic curriculum for intermediate and advanced levels.
  23. News to me. We do a lot of grappling and groundwork. It depends on the school. If you have it narrowed down to two, visit each and go with the quality of instruction and school over general opinions of the style.
  24. It's just another reason to get a yard guy and to spend more time training...I'm beginning to see method in the madness....
