Since I started running, I have not had a problem being out of breath. Try some endurance training like jogging, swimming, and/or biking. It's important to be in good cardiovascular shape to get the most out of your workouts.

Here's a good place to looK: http://www.urbin.net/EWW/MA/KEMPO/kempo.html

Take a geometry lesson and look at how effective shape can be. For instance the angle of your arm in an overhead block can directly affect the direction of the deflected strike. Or, In the jui-jitsu and judo sense, the leverage and center of gravity question is also huge. Math/science can prove how style and shape can be effective. Good luck with your project. Better you than me!

Try to be a friend. Show genuine interest and don't dominate the conversation. Just have a fun time. No need to take it too serious, especially if you are 13.....

Did you have an option?

Oh yeah, as for the shoes, I picked an Asics wrestling shoe. They fit like gloves and hold up well. -

In college I earned a brown belt in a karate system that was more hard than soft, but had self defense in it along with throws and takedowns. When I moved to the University, I took a very hard Shotokan style, but I really wanted to take Kung Fu because my original system had some of its elements in it. I ended up dropping the Shotokan and doing some freestyle with an Isshun Ryu guy. Well, fifteen years later I wanted to start training again. I looked at a Japenese hard style, a Korean school, and then the Shaolin Kempo school down the street. Well, the Shaolin part just fascinated me because I really wanted to learn the softer aspects. The bonus for me was that the school also does a lot of self defense and grappling, which I really enjoy. I think I made an informed choice and I have no regrets. -
Ok, I see your point. The belt colors are not really equivalent between the two schools. You actually got a promotion of sorts when you "stayed" a blue belt. Going from 6th to 4th gup was probably not fair to yourself or the other students. I think you made a good choice. It shows integrity and should earn you some respect from your fellow students. Good luck.

The wavemaster was a good choice for me since I don't have any spare beams to hang the heavy from. I had one in a different house and when you really moved it the whole house shook!

Trust your instructor and relax.

It just wasn't the same without you. Welcome back!

Kajukenbo would be a good style to try. From it sprang many of the "East Coast" Kempo schools. Good luck.

I want my instructor to make a decent living and not have to worry about making rent. That way he can concentrate on teaching. With him sweating it the quality of the instruction would go down. Also I wouldn't want to worry about him closing shop. Switching gears. I think its OK to charge a lot if you get a lot in return (kind of like "you get what you pay for"). Good teachers are in demand and deserve to get paid for their expertise. Just because someone is a Karate Teacher doesn't mean that they should take a vow of poverty. The Jokers that charge a lot and don't deliver are just that, Jokers. They soon find themselves with high turnover in students and not much credibility. They don't last long. Just my opinion.

I wear the pants to and from unless I'm coming from work. There is no locker room.

Kensai, you are always the gentleman. Do take care. It won't be the same.
