Limited and Unsure
Red J replied to Seraph's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Maybe he was in a hurry... ...Try the free class, if you don't like it don't return. I talked to the guys working out in my dojo before I joined. That way I got a pretty good picture what was what. If I went on first impressions, then I may have not given it a shot. Now if this guy tries to get you to sign a contract the first night, you better run... -

Interesting...definitely a specialized market. -
Good move.

Your mama is so big that when she lays around the house, she lays around the house. Your mama is so fat that jumped on a rainbow and skittles popped out. Here is an ugly one: You were so ugly that your mama had to tie a steak around your neck just to get the dog to play with you. All in fun.

At 6'3", you are pretty lean. Go to your University health clinic and see if there are any nutrition services available. If not talk to your doctor. And yes, not eating enough can make you dizzy and tired after a workout. I'm no expert, but you need to listen to your body.

road work
Red J replied to sansoouser's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Remember to start slowly and a good rule of thumb is to increase your mileage no more than 10% a week. Good tip: Short runs on the weekdays, long endurance run on the weekend. Plenty of rest between runs and don't forget to hydrate. -
road work

Three to five miles twice a week, five to eight once on the weekend. -
Having a last name like "1", I could see how the conclusion could be drawn. Of course this comment is being generated from a guy with the last name of "J".

Front leg, you bet!

Same response as G, 5th dan. I see it more as a title and level of proficiency, not that you have mastered Karate. My sixth degree Sensei (Master)professes that he is constantly learning...from us! That is probably why he is so advanced, because he can learn at anytime from anybody. He says he has so much to learn. Of course he is light years ahead of us. Good topic.

No, its not cool. I'm glad someone filled you in. Most of the Kempo that I know of is very simular to Kajukenbo as it comes from that system. If I were you I would listen to someone who knows what they speak of, like Pacificshore.

Yes, I take Shaolin Kempo. I also have taken Shotokan and I think that you will have the basics covered. In the kempo I take, it has more self defense and also covers groundwork and take-downs on a regular basis. You will find that it also teaches you some softer moves as well. Good luck.

Christians and the Martial Arts
Red J replied to kchenault's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Good article Ken. I always saw bowing as a way to show respect or to greet someone. According to a quick internet search on Japenese customs, it is on a simular status as a handshake. I don't see it as any different in MAs. I think you made a great point that your beliefs, whether Christian or other, most likely will not be compromised in the pursuit of most MAs. -
Think of it like this. If you think that flexiblity loses power then you are assuming that lack of flexibility increases power. Not true. You can be flexible and still have power. I think where you might have a point may be where you throw a really high kick requiring more flexibility as opposed to a range that requires less flexiblity. Generally kicks that require greater flexibility, like in the 5-6 foot range, are harder to master and generate power than say a kick belt level.

Speaking of Foghorn Leghorn and Dog, how about his nemesis "Chickenhawk". HAHAHAHA.

I can relate. How many times do you wake up like 2 minutes before the clock is supposed to go off. I hate when that happens. LOL.

Scooby doo rules. So does the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote.

I think this is pretty common. You really need to concentrate on breathing during these exercises. Constant practice doing this will make it become second nature. It's a mindset change to not think of the exercise, but your breathing. Good luck.

From what you described, I don't think there is a DA/SA alive that would take on something that lame. Now stealing and using someone's SS# is fraudulent with obvious intent.

Perhaps he is using "Author's License" to dramatize and illustrate a point.

Your deal sounds fair. As far as the gi goes, I wear my pants and a t-shirt and put my gi top and belt on at the studio. If you are not sure, call the instructor and just ask him "what is dojo etiquette regarding uniforms and belts". He/she should gladly answer your question. As far as the black belt goes...that depends on you. Good luck.
