I just wear the standard upper mouth guard. Some wear the upper and lower. If you have "brittle teeth" you may want to consult your dentist to get the best protection for your needs.

Good advice, you can get these at a MA store. I use Macho brand which is easy to find on the net and is carried in many stores. You may want to ask the instructor if there is something specific that you need. Also pay attention to the color. You may not want to be the only one sparring with yellow pads with blue lightning bolts on them... ...when in doubt get black or the predominent color used by the school.

With your serious training starting, you may only need a sensible meal plan as the increased exercise may take care of the extra weight. You may consider consulting a nutritionist as Mr. Heel Hook advised. My best tip is to drink plenty of water and exercise regularly. Good luck and keep us posted.

I think that I would start by asking the sensei what are the styles that have influenced "American Karate". From there you can do a search and get the history. Many schools have "American" or "United States" in their names but really teach a traditional style or base themselves on several traditional styles. Good luck.
