  1. My positive thinking works most of the time but my negative thinking works all of the time. The lesson is that positive thinking breeds and fosters the chances for positive results more than negative thinking does. You reap what you sow. It's the same with worrying. Most of the things that people worry about never come true. Why waste your time and your mind? That's why I like MA training. It keeps me in the present. Check out my signature. It says a lot about how our minds keep us from living up to our full potential.
  2. Caf King, your comparison is interesting. The only point that I can add is that martial artists have a choice while many pain sufferers do not. It may be worthwhile investigating martial artists that suffer from these ailments versus martial artists that are injury/ailment free. Just a thought. To support your noble pursuit of higher education, I would be happy to participate in your study. Good luck.
  3. Welcome BRG. I had a simular layoff and have found my way back to decent form in short order. Train hard and have fun!
  4. Boxeador, welcome to the forums.
  5. Welcome Alien!
  6. Enjoy!!!
  7. I take classes 3 to 4 times a week for an hour. Sometimes I'll hang out a little to practice a certain technique or get in some more grappling.
  8. I agree with Jack. Make time to make eating a priority. Yes it is a pain in the neck, but well worth it. Most days for lunch, I just grab a few pieces of fruit and a protein bar. It is not as much fun as french fries, but a lot healthier. Like KickChick, I also try not to eat after 7pm, definitely a good tip. Good luck!
  9. I study Shaolin Kempo, but in college (many moons ago) I did American Karate, and joined a Shotokan club.
  10. A have a slight lean for normal situations and I also do the kick, on occasion, that Karatekid1975 explained.
  11. Use what works! I do. My wife is thrilled that I have something that has allowed me to lead a more healthy life. I am now down to my "fighting" weight, a place that I haven't seen since we met, just over ten years ago.
  12. Kenp4life, try this link. http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=4456&highlight=
  13. Kenpo123, we are on the same page! Thanks for the clarification.
  14. So, Shaolin Fighter, what are your plans? You guys remember him, don't you? He's the one who started this thread.
  15. This is so true. Now you also need to realize that there are many different reasons why people take martial arts.
  16. You never know until you are there, but I think you would do just fine.
  17. This is hard to explain. If I anticipate the attack, my first instinct is to give a sideways forearm into the base of the neck while trying to maintain a little distance. I don't like the kick at close range, but I could see a good placed knee (you better not miss). If they get in on me I like to trap and control the head, move my weight down and sideways, keeping the opponents weight going in the direction of his attack. From here you can grab an arm, drive the head into the ground, tie up the legs, or even come around the back, and go to work. You can also do Kensai's move with a little practice, but it's not my first choice. With my wrestling background I try to look for ways to use the attacker's momentum against them. I try not to get into strength contest as with the attacker committing it makes more sense to affect the balance. Does this make any sense? It's hard to explain.
  18. Ok, but at least you're honest. But since you said not to ask twice, I think I may need to. This could get interesting.
  19. Yah, its fun until your kids start getting those gifts. LOL It seems like whenever a new tech product comes out it starts with batteries and then progresses to rechargeables, then to internal rechargeables. PDAs come to mind...the latest generations all have the loading docks. Is this by design to keep all those techies buying the latest and greatest? They could have started with that technology. It makes you wonder...
  20. Wow, the big 50..0..0.. We are having a good time!
  21. I ran into a few dead icon images (they just didn't load) on the chat page. They came up after I re-entered. No biggie.
  22. Congratulations and Happy Birthday! A big on both accounts. Have a great day.
  23. Good point godan.
  24. Wow, I leave the screen for just a minute and I miss all the action! LOL Thai, the Chin Na that I have learned is basically the same as the JJ I have also been taught. There is no theory to prove behind a good arm bar, wrist lock, choke hold, arm manipulation, take down, neck control, leg lock, ankle break, etc. as you've probably seen many of them. These moves and holds, or slight variations of them, are universal to many systems. Many schools teach Chin Na or JJ without ever naming it as such, incorporating it into a self defence set. Anyway, this thread has really become interesting. I'm glad we are getting some mileage out of it.
  25. Welcome! Tell us about shootfighting when you get a few minutes.
