First Black Belt
french fri25 replied to Sensei Tom OBrien's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
wow. thats great dude. he sounds like a very loyal student. we dont have any black belts at our school either; it must feel great to have an assistant instructor by your side now. -
welcome to KF and make sure to let us know how you do on your test.

congrats James!! -
our belts have L.I Hapkido on one side. on the other side we have our first name in korean and our last name in english and we have the stripes for whatever dan you are. im not sure if we all have to do this though. there are no black belts at my school yet except for my instructor. our school has only been open for like 2 years. i will most likely be the first person to test for black in my school since i am the second highest ranking student(1st highest rank will be a jr BB when i test for 1st dan) so ill have to find out if its mandatory to have the same one as my instructor.

Murphy's Law For Martial Artists...
french fri25 replied to Chuilli, Kyo Sah Nim's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
hmmm... kinda seems like you know my life exactly. lol. a few of those things might have happened to me. . im not gonna mention which ones though. -
i have a dog and a snake.

i trained extensively on these things. first of all, they tend to slide around a lot, depending on what kind of floor your using. also, if they are used a lot, the padding weakens and you are basically kicking at the plastic center. i dont think they are the most reliabe bags. i would much rather have a hanging bag.

just ask, maybe someone who doesnt take tsd or sbd could answer. there are a lot of smart people on this forum who know a lot about all kinds of MA's.

welcome to the forums.

Have you read? Fighter Fact book 2?
french fri25 replied to learning kempo-karate's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
sounds interesting. the only thing i dont agree with is when you said "Want to know if your martial arts works?" i think all martial arts work. i think it just depends on "how" you train, not "what" you train in. -

i think anybody can do martial arts and recieve a benefit from it. i would never say no to anyone interested in MA. if you want to try it, then i say go for it. even though you might not be able to do all the pushups or situps or whatever, if you give 100%, you should be very proud of yourself. there is no way you can join that chito ryu school and not learn something to your benefit. remember, you are not doing this for anyone else, you are doing this for you. if karate is something you want to do, you will benefit from it in many ways. you will lose weight, gain friends, learn how to protect yourself, and most importantly, become a happier person.

if you had a choice of anything to wear to training, what would it be and why? i would wear my dobok any day because it is comfortable and represents my art and my school.

yes, he really is a great person. i am so greatful to have an instructor like him. he really showed me what martial arts are really about. so many people teach martial arts in order to make money over anything else and thats wrong. he teaches martial arts to show people how to be better people and how to better their lives. oooh yea, and how to beat people up

i went to a JKD school and stupidly joined. i joined because i didnt know what i was supposed to expect from a martial art. then, i looked up hapkido on long island, and 1 school popped up. i gave the guy a call and went for a free class. i loved it. i coldnt join the hkd school though because i had a 6 month contract with my jkd school. about 2 months later, the hkd instructor called me up and said he felt bad that i was forced to stay at the jkd school, so he let me come train absolutely for free until my other contract was up. he gave me a free uniform and a free 2 months of classes. once my jkd contract was up, i started paying my hkd instructor. he didnt ask for extra money or anything. my instructor is absolutely the worst salesman in the world. he is just a generous, unselfish person. he doesnt make a business out of his school. its more like a family than a business.if we need extra time, he lets us have private lessons for free. he just wants to see us do good in life. thats what i love about him. he also has so much experience in different arts that go so well together. he was in the United States special forces, he has a 3rd degree black belt in hkd, a 2nd degree black belt in moo duk kwan, and a 3rd degree black belt in jiu jutsu, so we get excellent all around instruction.

my thoughts and prayers are with all the victims families, friends, and classmates. it was truly a tragic day where so many innocent, helpless people were killed for no reason. i hope the university will bounce back and continue to provide great education for their students, but i hope that the students who perished are not forgotten.
