its good to have you!

ummmm... well, that was very professional. its nice to see people like that setting good examples for children. that seriously was hilarious, especially when he crawled to the pitchers mound. lol. priceless.

congradulations dude!!

lol. i had a great time. i cant wait until the next tournament. it was great fun being able to watch all the different styles. i read a lot about the differences between styles, but i never actually saw the differences first hand. let me tell you, some of those weapons forms, they are completely insane. i know all those jumps and flips and twirls wont work in real life, but they sure look cool. lol.

thanks guys. i just got back from the tournament. ok, heres what happened. there were 4 groups. beginner which was 10th, 9th, 8th, and 7th kup/kyu. intermediate was 6th, 5th, 4th kup/kyu. advanced was 3rd, 2nd, and 1st kup/kyu. and there was a black belt division. i was supposed to be in the 16-17 yr old intermediate division, but there was nobody in my division. so, they said i could either have my money back or i could move up in divisions. in the new division, there was only 1 person for me to fight. he was a 2nd kyu, im a 6th kup. lol. i did really good against him and only lost 5-4, i had a really nice kick to his head which boosted my confidence a lot. i came in second place in the sparring. in forms, it was the same thing, except there were 2 other compeditors and i came in 3rd. so, i was pretty happy with my results. i never thought i would have done that good against 2nd and 1st kyus.

thanks a lot guys. ummm, the rules are point sparring rules. the fight will be stopped after each point is scored, the fight is up to 5 points. there is medium contact, light contact to the head. kicks and punches are only counted as 1 point even if you hit the head. there are no elbows or knees allowed. thats basically it. i have no idea how im going to stay calm out there. im gonna be scared to death out there. i wanna prove to all my classmates how good of a fighter i really am. my instructor says it constantly to the new students. ooo the only way your going to learn to fight is to fight someone like john, and stuff like that. i just want to be able to show that his words are true.

hey guys. tomorrow im competing my first tournament. im a little nervous though because im going to be the youngest and lowest rank in my division. im doing point fighting and a form. im a green belt ( 6th kup) adn im fighting people with 6th, 5th, and 4th kups. also, im in the 16-17 yr old division, and i just turned 16 not too long ago, so im kinda worried. does anybody have any last minute tips for sparring and forms? i am going to practice like a madman today to try to perfect my form, but i dont know what to do to practice for sparring. if anyone has any tips, please feel free to post. i have no idea what to expect so any info would be helpful. thanks.

Is it possible to be dedicated to two "sports ?
french fri25 replied to Kante's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
there is no reason for you to not play football too. as already stated, you may have less recreation time, but if your willing to give some of that up, you definitely can do both. i play hockey, and tennis along with my MA training and i still go to class 4 times a week. its all about your dedication and will to sacrafice a few hours to yourself and use them for football or MA. -
Passed My Grading

congradulations on your new rank!! -
i agree with you totally. i had so much trouble finding a traditional school. i wanted to train in an okinawan style, but there are only about 3 schools on all of long island. all the other schools are all modern, mma, mixed, made up styles. we have 2 isshin ryu schools and one matsubayashi shorin ryu school (none of which are near me). its ridiculous how hard it is to find a good ole dojo. the most traditional dojo on LI is probably a shotokan dojo near me, but i dont want to take shotokan. im just gonna wait till next year when i get my drivers license to go to the isshin and shorin ryu schools and see what they are like. they are like a 45-hour long drive which i wouldnt mind, but my mom has cancer and its hard for her to get up and drive me places, plus my dad is always working so i have no way to get there now.

What's your job- what would you like it to be?
french fri25 replied to marie curie's topic in General Chat
i would like to be a cop like my dad. seems like a fun job, and you never know whats gonna happen. seems pretty exciting. -
welcome. what style of karate are you studying?
-
welcome dude!

you will never be able to count the number of martial arts there are in the world. every day there is someone who makes up his own art, and calls himself a 10th dan. hell, i could be a 10th dan. all i would need to do is make up a cool name and use by basic knowledge of jkd, hkd, and mdk, plus some weapons. there you go, i just made my own art, add it to the list

thanks for the link matlas. nice step by step guide on how to make nunchuks. seems pretty easy...
-
ok, well i looked through the last few pages and didnt see anything so im sorry if this has been posted before. i live in new york and its a law that you're not allowed to purchase nunchuks. so, i figured i'd make my own... except i dont know how. has anyone here ever made nunchuks before? if so, how did they turn out. could you tell me how to make some? i really would love to learn to use nunchuks but it would be very difficult to get any into the state. if you have any pictures of the nunchuks you made that would be cool to see, just to get an idea of what mine might look like. im so ticked off i have to make my own. there are so many nice nunchuks out there for like 15 bucks and im not allowed to buy them. im looking to make a regular pair of wooden nunchuks with either chain or cord... whatever is easier to make. doesnt matter what kind of wood... i just want a basic pair of nunchuks that are gonna last me a long time till i can buy some real ones. thanks

Deadly techniques - are you prepared?
french fri25 replied to gzk's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
i agree. i would never try to kill someone in a fight. my hapkido if used effectively should allow me to control my opponent without really hurting them. but, if i was required to use striking, i would never try to really hurt someone like gauging their eyes or something like that unless if it were absolutely neccessary. if i were being attacked by a knife, or if im on my back in a really bad situation where my own life could be at stake, then i would use more brutal tactics and do whatever neccessary to escape from danger. -
gzk, thats what i do. i turn with my back kind of facing the target more than i would in a usual fighting stance, but i shouldnt be. thats not gonna help me, its gonna make my instructor think i can do it and when it comes time to test, he'll notice. i want to learn how to do the technique. bushido man, thats what another student in my class does. he uses ankle weights and jumps and chambers his kick, but he does not throw it. i need to get me a pair of those weights, as he says they work really good.

How are you being trained as a Ninja?
french fri25 replied to dippedappe's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
a lot of the things can be found right in the taijutsu. you just have to look for it. most of the time, your instructor wont tell you guys, "okay, today we're gonna learn stealth walking." its just hidden in the art itself. stealth is stealthy. if everyone learned about stealth, it wouldnt be stealth, get it? also, hatsumi saw what he was being taught in ninjutsu and it frightened him to know that anybody could learn these skills. stealth and infiltration techniques and assasination techniques and things of the sort will be taught to only the closest of students to hatsumi. you cant just go around teaching people how to break into houses and sneak up behind someone and throw a shuriken at their head. imagine what kind of psychos would be walking around with those skills if it were in the curriculum. only the highest and most trusted students of hatsumi can learn these skills proficiently. if you go up to your average ninjutsu instructors, most of them probably dont even know these skills.
