I have some videos that I use to correct my kata. I was fortunate enough to have my instructor on tape performing the kata. I have used other video for comparison purposes as well as seeing different technique combinations.
The kata as performed is somewhat similar to the one I learned in Isshin Ryu. The Seisan that you perform has some added middle outside blocks at the beginning and the ending sequence of kicks are a bit different. It is interesting to see how Seisan is similar in some respects and different in other respects. Thanks
I do not practice Shotokan and I have this book. I found it to be one excellent text. I would recommend it not only to those who are studying Shotokan but other styles as well. If you have a MA library this book should be in there Welcome and good luck.
Mmmm, I always thought that Jion was a larger person's kata (not taller just wider -- which I was and am) but since I am only 5'9" (in the morning) now I understand my love of the kata. Maybe it's because shorter people are closer to the ground and have a lower centerpoint of gravity??? Interesting comment you made from your Sensei. Thanks
blendings from the farthest ends of each thing. Black/white, sweet/sour, hard/soft, good/bad, etc. the universe needs both. Good without bad cannot exist. Bad without good cannot exist.
There is always someone stronger and that someone may not even know how to spell Karate. As for school patches in public we were always told "be humble about yoiur training." Most did not wear the jackets in public. Those that did never had problems.
Someone can possibly find the techniques for you but with that you have the possibility that what they give you is not correct. What you get may very well be the correct technique for another school but your instructor's version may be anywhere from slightly to totally different. Perhaps you can get the information from your instructor or a senior student?
As said, it is up to you. My first instructor, when he started training, trained in karate and Akido at the same time. Try it. If it works for you fine. If not adjust accordingly/ Good luck
I love both Jion and Jiin. Based on nothing in particular I sometimes think that Jiin and Jutte were once one kata. I learned the Shito Ryu version of Jiin and practiced it because I heard that it was a "forgotten" kata and since it is such a nice kata I wanted to make sure that someone remembered it.
fancy techniques get you into trouble. Nice high kicks get caught and pretty flowing techniques get countered and then you get drilled. Basics the cornerstone of MA. Good solid basics every time all the time IMO
Mmmmm, are you speaking of a waza that combines various blocks and punch sequences? For example the one that I learned starts out with a left middle outside block followed by two mid level forward punches and moves to a right high block followed by two mid level forward punches...
