I liked them for run and because it challenged a workout since, most of the ones I learned came near the end of the kata. In my old age, I am finding that with my knees being what they are they are not as enjoyable but I do still see benefit in them if, for nothing else, to remind me of who I am and what I can realistically do.

That's how it is in society, though. No one wants to punish the "heros" so they get it easy. It goes this way with people in sports all the time. Look at the incident with the Texas Longhorn players here recently. That is very much true. Major stars in Basketball travel from 1/2 court or more without the ball touching the ground. There are other smaller infractions that do not get called because they are stars. It improves their performance and there output because they get away with such things. It is quite disturbing. Texas Longhorns, Colorado...the list goes on and there is probably a good portion that we know nothing about yet. And for MLB...again, most dissappointing

I agree. Many of the American masters who studied in Japan or Okinawa or ?? after WWII and during Korea left with heafty belt levels that were worn right after returning to the states. They learned to the Shodan or NiDan level (but learned all of the kata or most of it in the system) and came back wearing 6 and 7th dan markings. When they left, a great deal of them were at levels that would indicate that they just learned enough to begin learning and the few times back and forth to Japan or their teacher was not enough, realistically, to benefit them to the level that it should have. My point is that the art is watered down and I agree with you. There has been so much not learned at the higher levels. I am afraid that both of my teachers (both of which learned in Japan and Okinawa, although they seemed knowlegable to me may be at that point too where there is still a great deal that they do not know because they never had the exposure under the appropriate conditions to learn what they could have learned for their rank. It seems that the more I learn the more I wonder and the more that I find that I have yet to learn. That is why I say if one does not understand the reason for kata as a whole or parts of a kata it is not the fault of the kata but rather that it requires that you do what you can to research it more before making changes or thowing it out all together... just my thoughts

They don't have to score a point all season (almost) but as long as they beat the Bears next time it may be a "saved" seasson. And if they knock the Bears out of a playoff (yes' Bear fans around me are talking Superbowl already) it will even may even be an acceptable season

Most profound! Thank you

Maybe in 7 (and I am thinking ahead to the next one) Rocky could fight Bin Laden in a winner take all for all the marbles! I say keep on going for as long as it can go. What is the most sequeled movie of all time? Maybe Rocky can beat that too. Within the last few days I rented as many as I can find and I got caught up into it. Rocky! Rocky! Rocky! -
I like the vegan pizza ingredients mentioned but the cheese, sauce and such other items necessary to make it a vegan pizza may require some taking use to. I would imagine finding it is difficult if not impossible unless you do it yourself...which I am starting to think is a good idea anyhow

I am sensible. The way they looked against the Bears (and the Bears are not that good either) the Packers may not score a point this year...

I had the same problem in my first tornament. Afterwards my instructor asked me what was going on. I told him that I was blocking everything just well (mostly). He point out that I lost and had no chance of winning. Which today is obvious but at the time not so much. He said that in a real situation nobody can block forever and if I was planning on blocking until the other person tired out that would not happen either. He said to look for openings and then have at one every so often. From there it was a little better each time.

I'm still laughing about a few of these

I'm a Packer fan. It's going to be a long bad year.

I don't think that corn in an ingredient available out by me in any pizza place. Maybe I'll try a homemade version with that combination this weekend

I say to each his own but I prefer plain solid colored gi (acceptable color with instructor) and one organization patch. Period.

Very smartly put PlasmaShock.

I was taught a flying side kick at 6th Kyu. So Ryu had, at the time, a kata named Bei Rei which had a left foot flying side kick in it that was learned at the green belt level. Farther than that there was Chinto and Kusanku which had jump kicks that were taught as brown belts. Although the kata was taught at the brown belt level we learned them as part of advanced basics so that we could prepare for using them

I would say the the combination is most interesting.

I would agree. Back in the day (way back like) old masters did not learn a great deal of kata. They concentrated on a few. They took the time to pretty much master one before moving on to the next. The numbers are not important. There are arguements for learning a lot and for learning a few. To each his own. Never-the-less kata is important. Also, many good arguements have been presented. Thanks

Sorry for what will most likely be a post so soon but...after viewing the Matayoski version that was presented I am sorry to say that I do not know what it is that I was taught a number of years ago. It has elements of the Lindsey version but it was nothing like the Matayoshi version. This whole thing was most educational.
-
which one you refering to? the first one by Mr. Lindsey or second one with Sensei Matayoshi? did you see the second clip? is this the one you refering as matayoshi Hakutsuru? do you practice any crane kata? do you use it in self defense techniques? Ooops, bad me. I did not see the second clip from Matayoshi. I was referring to the Matayoshi version that I was taught. I have to go see the second clip. Sorry about that

And will he be in the ring sporting a cane? I mean after all is he not 60? -
although I agree with Brandon Fisher and MizuRyu I also believe that there are many paths that can be taken to achieve your goal. although I believe that some paths are better than others it is for each of us to select our own path. Sometimes, half way down the new path we find that we must return. Sometimes, for whatever reason, we don't. My thoughts are, that after hundreds of years of training being taught to each new student with kata it is not something that should be changed so easily. Some people, and I am not suggesting that you are one, choose not to follow the tradition because they see or cannot understand the purpose of it or for it. Not seeing sometimes may mean deeper study or finding a deeper understanding. In other words, because I find the reason does not mean that it does not exit. With that said, it's fine to follow your own path. It's your choice. Good luck in reaching your goal
