Kung Fu
patusai replied to Shaolin_Dragon's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Learning from Video is difficult...especially the videos that are out there. If you want me to open mind it for a second...with technology being what it is...perhaps someone can create a training video for review purposes and that with somewhat frequent one-on-one training you can develop to a point that you are looking to develop to. I'm not saying that this is the best idea and I am not too sure that an instructor has the ability or desire to make a training video and will be able to come to you (or you travel to him for a weekend frequently). Once you develop to a certain level after taking actual classes such an arrangement might be more practical. Good luck in your pursuit. I hope that you can find something that will be able to give you want you are looking for. -
an interesting perspective on the kyu and dan system
patusai replied to alsey's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Sometimes...sometimes, I think that way to go is kinda like a pass/fail system in some schools. Your either a kyu or a dan. You either wear a white belt for years and after that a black belt. No stripes or nothing to signify rank. Grades can be given to specify level but the grades can never be used in reference to yourself. Of course a lot of people will either not follow that plan or will choose to leave MA and do their own thing. Unfortunately, Americans, and others too for sure, need to "keep their eye on the prize and that prize is a BB. Training to train is out of the question. Perhaps we will see a time when there are 20 key levels followed by 20 dan levels because, well, we need to encourage and maintain students. Sometimes...again, sometimes, you just want to go off in some cafe and train alone...but then...well, that won't work for most of us either. Excellent link I thought -
I love George Carlin. The bad thing is, that is about the only one you can quote on the site! I was kinda worried about this one too

Thank you. I'm kinda getting the PS2 is the way to go. Xbox360 looks interesting but I think that the number of games available for what she is looking for may be a problem. I'm still thinking and kicking tires so to speak. Thanks for your input.

My Friend Needs Your Thoughts and Prayers!
patusai replied to Sohan's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I will keep him and his family (entire family) in my prayers and ask my daughter to do the same. God really listens to children. -
For So Ryu Kan at Godan we develop out own kata and bunkai. It is not part of the training. We do not add. The kata were added years ago in the development and it stays there. I will say that over the years some schools have changed the order of the kata as I was taught them and removed some or use some an optional

Welcome to the forum and welcome back to MA. I have been back and forth a number of times over the years but usually not for very long.

It's kinda like age too. Skills increase but other things hold you back. Old, fat masters if they had the knowledge and skillset back when they were shodans would be unbelievable. As for the heavy ones...if they can just get one good one in...it's over
