Interesting. It has some of the elements of Matayoski Hakutsuru. the one that you have shown appears to be a bit more advanced and a bit longer than the Matayoshi verson. Thanks

an interesting perspective on the kyu and dan system

Perhaps the answer is going back to the beginning when there were no "styles" and each family had their own karate as it was learned from father to son (or daughter). I mean all the styles and organizations are breaking down anyhow and each has a faction that goes it's own way. It's getting too watered down and nobody can get alone. I have not taught in years. Not because of politics or because of a bad experience but rather, with a family, there are other things to do that need getting done. I think what I have learned in MA, will continue to be for my benefit and nothing more. I can teach my daughter and stepson if they choose to learn what I have been taught. They may choose to go into training in a large prestigious organization or simply learn at home with me. Politics cannot and will not stop. I think it is human nature that screws it up more often than not. -
Let's see if I can remember... Itosu created some of the Pinan. Although one of his creations was easier and should have been the first one taught, out of respect for his teacher who either created the other Pian or techniques used in it came from his teacher he chose to signify that one as One instead of his easier creation. That is something like the way that I remember it and I am trying to google information to see if something like that is out there.

As for cost of 3rd dan...in business and professional societies there is a cost for certification testing and it is usually a few hundred dollars. For example, there are a number of security related certifications and the testing is $300 plus there is a recertification fee (about 50 bucks) every three years. My point is certification of any kind costs $$. I agree that it should not be that way. It is almost as if you need to have money to advance in anything. It is not enough to know your stuff. You have to pay someone a fee to acknowledge that you know it. Sometimes I have a difficult time with that. Good luck in April! -
after reading the last post from atalaya...size does not matter. Some styles complement large bodies better. But besides that...size does not matter. Sometimes Americans (and others) we thing everyone has to be thin, trim and such in order to do anything athletic. MA is for all body types. Just my view

That's a really good point! If supplements would help then people would be smoking, taking the supplements and not encountering the ill effects of smoking

She is looking for a console. Her friends have Xbox. The games are expensive (especially XBox360 games) and there are not that many teen rated games available now. maybe in the near future? There is also some online thing allow you to play XBox (XBox and XBox 360 are not compatible except on line and you need a DSL connection to do this properly. I have dial up (probably one of the few to still have this but...). I have to make a decision soon. Thanks for your input.

Humble Beginner Seeks Advice

I agree with Jiffy, bushido_man96 and others...private lessons may be available. If not senior students may also be able to help. Attending an additional class may also help. Talking to the instructor is also a good idea. Ask the instructor for suggestions to improve. Most of my instructors took extra time with those students who needed additional help. If the instructor only wants students who catch on quickly then perhaps changing schools would be a good idea. I would be dissappointed to find an instructor who only wants easily taught students. Talking to the instructor soon after the incident, although it may be tough, would be a good idea--I would think-- because it would show that you are taking an interest in improving. Whatever you decide to do...the best of luck to you -
Pian Shodan? Which one. Some schools will use what others call Pian Ni Dan as Shodan. At this time I can't explain it well but it goes something like one being easier than the other but because of a respect issue.

I would think that even if the true "heros" of MA are not on this Forum hiding there may be some people who are at the level of understanding that they are because of them. There are probably many unsung heros on this site as well. Sometimes the greatest heros are not those that are nationally recognized.

An unexpected large weight loss should be of concern and a doctor visit should be done. It may be nothing serious but it is unusual especially if you cannot explain it satisfactorily. Please see a doctor. Good luck

I agree. I would like to add that if you want to be under the organization you follow what it says. Perhaps it would have been a good idea to talk to the head of the origanization and get permission to use the name before offically naming it. I believe that, traditionally, that is what would have been expected. Is the 8th dan oriential? Sometimes getting permissions is expected as a cultural kind of way. I hope that all goes well with your school.

Accepting back past students to the dojo?
patusai replied to Shotokan-kez's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I am dissappointed to find that an instructor would act like that especially where a child is concerned. Perhaps he it trying to teach everyone a lesson...perhaps the instructor will learn a lesson in all of this too. -
I am not sure if supplements will help. You can possibly detox the body but second hand smoke in the lungs is suppose be dangerous. It will be interesting to see if anyone can offer a good suggestion for you. Good luck.
