  1. It might be interesting. I think I'll see if I can find it at a bookstore. Thanks. I'm kinda into those type of books since my teachers each use to try to dispell many of the myths of MA
  2. I'm not but I have been there a number of times in my life. Nice state
  3. Maybe. Each situation is different. Sometimes talking, walking or running will not be effective. Most of the time I think that it would be but then it would depend on the situation, where your are at and other such factors
  4. For reason, maybe it's old age, I found that very funny
  5. I have two: Christopher is 20 and Brooke is 13. Both wanted to learn karate but each thought that they could learn overnight and thus don't. I taught each how to punch once and a few weeks later Chris had his friends over and announced that I taught him everything I know about karate (to impress I guess). I practice w/o the family. They don't understand and they believe that Karate is some mystical, magical ultimate weapon even though I tell them differently
  6. I do not think that it is a good idea as a requirement for BB. If there is weaponry classes then that can be part of the training I suppose. If you have a gun and the other guy is getting the best of you in a fight then you will be more inclined to use the gun one way or another. The end result may be death when the need to kill was not necessary. Almost all fights do not need to end in death IMHO. As for packing a weapon (if caught with it) try telling the police officer that you are a martial artist and it is part of your training.
  7. Good idea. Of course some start training while they are in the womb. Here's to a heathy future to all of you.
  8. What titles have you come across? Hanchi, Shihan, Renshi, Sensei and a few others What do they mean? Teacher, teacher of teachers, and it goes up What is expected of someone with these titles? Rank and license When should they be issued? Based on requirements of the style or issuing body When ARE they issued? same as above but the capital ARE to me indicates that you feel that they are issued before they should. In some cases I agree. In many cases I agree. The above titles are teaching licenses of sorts. They were around before belt rank as I understand it. I know a number of rather high ranking guys who use the title of Master or Grand Master in their "resume" of themeselves and pormotional material but who refuse to allow their students to call them anything other than Sensei. It's personal preference. I think that here in the USA far too many people use the terms in reference to themselves. We have more grandmasters in this country then in all of the other countries of the world combined I read some where. That may be a bit much. That may be a bit too much of an ego thing. Just my opinion Signed Shidan Dai - Patusai
  9. When at home I practice in whatever I am wearing. Suits, jeans, pajamas, etc
  10. Some believe taht he is the reincarnation of Matsumura.
  11. I doubt if anyone can without seeing you perform. My idea would be to go to a Kung fu school, speak with the instructor and he can evaluate your skill level. Good luck.
  12. I believe you are right. Too many Americans train for the glory and the belt and the recognition. Others train to train and I believe too that it is a cultural issue. Now I am not saying all Americans and all schools and all instructors do this.
  13. I respectfully agree.
  14. Jion. It is/was called it Ura Jion
  15. I'm not sure I understand your statement. A very good way of looking at it!If my kick goes a distance of 6'2" to the guys jaw say and the target is 6'2" I meet target at full extention. In order for the kick to be effective my foot needs to travel at least 6'3" (aiming through the target). My kick That's kinda what I was taught is to follow through. Sorry for the confusion
  16. Patusai, unfortunately in our system we aren't permitted to share the Kyoku kata outside our school. Kind of silly, I know, but that's our tradition. Up to recently they weren't even performed in public! We have a secret handshake as well, but if I showed you, then I'd have to kill you. With respect, Sohan I know that this seem cold and somewhat calculating but except for the Kyoku kata taught to high black belts I'm thinking that the lower rank may be more open to sharing. Of course, I suppose, what they share and say is Kyoku may not be. I don't know about the secret handshake. I know about the bow though. Honestly though, my MA related goals in life are: [1] have someone correct/re-teach/teach ura Jion, Ura Patusa, Ura Kushanku and Ura Useishi to me. [2] learn the Kyoku kata Far fetched indeed but then I can dream
  17. That would be fine. From what I read and hear it does not appear that any of the Soryu schools teach the Ura katas anymore (ura Jion, ura Patusai, ura kushanku, ura useishi) and it appears that they no longer teach Bei Rei. I always wanted to talk about that with someone but ...I'll send you my email

  19. For some reason that reminded me of another one... I don't know karate but I know 7 other Japanese words!
  20. [quote name=" Perhaps what I most enjoy about our particular style and organization (as RSK_shudokan mentioned) is our tendency to *ahem* steal from everyone else. I'm currently learning Goju-ryu katas as taught by Teruo Chinen-Sensei' date=' before that I was learning a collection of uniquely Shudokan katas (Soshin, Choshin, Kaka/Kakoshin) and of course (getting somewhat on topic) Kyoku Shichidan (about which I can divulge nothing except that it's ridiculously long and exhausting to perform). I hope it was too onerous to read my random ramblings. -David[/quote] Soshin was a kata in Koyasu's SoRyu system at a black belt level. As for the Kyoku kata...someday I'll be able to find them. It's just a matter of time.
