  1. Shotokan is the better SD choice TKD is the better sport.
  2. welcome
  3. I take it everyone in this post knows each other. LOL
  4. Shotokan uses the low stance for building leg muscles. Funakoshi was very clear about this. Read his 20 preceps. (https://www.faka.com). The thinking is if you can learn to move fast low then when you go high in real life you will be that much faster. Funakoshi never said fight down here. He said train there to build mental and physicall toughness. Nothing more nothing less.
  5. Another reason for the Tiger I had heard but not from Shotokan people, is this. The Tiger is a Animal the stands for Power in China. This is popular in a lot of the Kung Fu styles. Such as the Dragon standing for Wisdom etc. Shotokan being a power based style one punch one kill the Tiger is a good choice. I don't know how much truth there is to that if any but it make sense to me.
  6. Its differant for differant schools. Its nice to have a certificate on the wall that some org. gave you their approval to teach but at the same time if you can TEACH then you can teach. No peace of paper wil make that call. As a teacher I felt obligated to make sure I had my paper work registered with a org. not for my sake but for my students sake. So to each his own but it does not effect how I teach.
  7. double post sorry
  8. Yeah some styles have 15 and 12 Dans and some have as few as 5. Jussi Häkkinen your point about their being 15 Dan grades in that style leads me more to belive he is a mcdojo because he don't know there is 15. Saying he is the best. I don't know this guy and he may be the real deal. Im just saying NO one in Japan wears a 10th Dan unless they are about ready to die. So take it for what its worth.
  9. Boxers, MT, BJJ, etc all become better fighters quicker for that reason. You give me any traditional Martial Artist who has studied for 10 years and he will hold his own with anyone. (in a real fight not UFC)
  10. If you want to learn to fight you must fight. Bottom line.... No traditional Martial Art does that. NONE. Karate, Kung Fu, TKD, TSD, even Judo, and Akkido. They spend time doing basics, kata, one step, weapons, conditioning. break falls, etc. Anyone can learn to fight in a few weeks IMO. It takes a few things to do so. 1. Guts by far the most important to be a good fighter you can't have much fear. 2. You got to have a sparring partner. Better if you got a few so you don't get used to one preson but you have to spar and spar hard. If you have those 2 things you will befome a decent fighter I don't care if niether of you know anything about MA. Fighting and MA are differant things. Martial Arts is learing not to fight though learing to fight.
  11. 10th Dan better check that out. It can't be done for the avg. person. Only the leaders of a given style. Most traditional styles say you must be 45 before you can get a 5th Dan. The guy prob. won so tourment and took the title. Be careful.
  12. Sounds like a side snap kick
  13. Big fan of Shotokan here lol theres my vote but the teacher is more important than the style anyday.
  14. Good job Sai I had heard and always understood the first story to be true however both do make sense and Id assume the truth lies in the middle somewhere. One question I do have is why the Half Moon is sometimes placed above the Tiger and sometimes placed below the Tiger. If you dont know what Im refering to look at the 2 patches sold in Century one has a half moon on top and the other on the bottom. There has to be some imporatnce for this but I have never been able to find it. If anyone knows please tell me I have wondered about this for years.

    Bag work?

Nothing wrong with bag work if your in MA or not its a great workout and builds power, speed, endurance, etc... A few things to keep in mind. 1. Be careful when pucnhing the bag unless you wrap your wrists you can turn a wrist espically on hard bags. I never let my class punch them for that reason. 2. Round kicks, and side kicks along with spinning versions of the 2 are about all you can hit a bag with. Front kicks are hard to target and cressant kicks can hurt you knee. Espically if the bag is moving and you hit it wrong. Bag work for me was huge in developing my roundhouse kick. In college I would throw 100 roundhouses on a heavy bag each day I worked out. Prob. 3 days a week or 4. I would take turns and do 10 on each leg and switch. I was in no rush just worked techinque. The snap and explosion of the hip. I would thorw some series light and some hard. Some fast and some slow just work the techinque. I see boxes do time rounds on the bag thats good but I like using the bag to develope techinques and power. I say pick you one thing to work on each day and just work it on the bag till you get tired. 10 mins or an 1hr don't matter. Get about 10 techinques and just do one a day. That way you don't get tired or burnout and your working to get better.
  17. You beat speed with power. You only have a few chances to land a good shot make it count. If your doing light contact I sugest find a new sport lol. Block his arms and hope you hurt them and slow him down.
  18. welcome
  19. This topic has poped up before and I think I have put a differant answer down each time lol. Jittie prob. is my favorite but at this time in my training I really like Sochin.
  20. light contact Howver this usually changes between the 2 people saparring. Naturally 2 younger men may go harder than 2 older women. To each their own.
  21. to the front
  22. As far as advanced if you mean flashy NO... Shotokan is very simple and when in doubt the most simple moves tends to work the best. The human body can only do so many things and to that end their is no secret move. From my exp. if you can thorw 3 kicks, (font, side, and round) 2 punches (jab and reverse) along with 4 basic blocks (up, down, inside and outside) you know about all you need to know. Yes Shotokan has a lot of hidded application in its kata but to say advanced training is much differant than beginner I would say no. With the exception that we do spar more.
  23. Yeah thats all I get. As far as the Heian's go they are more simple in stance changing and pattrens. Thus they are simpler to learn. Thats just my take. I think they are very good into kata and make kata's like Kanku Dai, Jion, Hangetsu, much simpler to learn and teach.
