  3. Ok the first move is a drop. 1. Think of being attacked by several guys at night. The drop to the floor is to disappear. Then you pop back up. Think of this like ninja magic. LOL I know that sounds geeky but thats one application. 2. Think of someone swinging a bat or stick and you and you just drop out of the way. Then as you pop up the kinife hand move is actually a throw because you came up under the attack and grabbed and pulled him downward. 3. Its a mount. Like in grappeling. You jump on the guy on the ground. Or you jump on him standing and take him down. Along the same lines you could be just jumping on a guy sort of like a Kung Fu style like you see in the moves. The spin and throw 1. Your just blocking punches. High, low, kicks etc. 2. The hand spin because you are grabbing his head and inner leg and you are flipping him. 3. About the same as 2 but it mixes it with one that you catch a kick and then flip him.
  4. Depends on the sweep but to have a good sweep its more about timming than anything else.
  5. Why don't people like it because it takes time. We live in a fast paced world where people want results now!!! MMA is the rage of the age. I want to fight in 2 hrs. I don't care what I learn or if I better myself. People don't like what they don't understand and Shotokan takes a long time to understand. Its a very deep art. On the surface you see the traditional view but the deeper and deeper you dig the more SD you find. Again it takes time but you grow as you develpe this because most of what you find is based upon your personal understanding not what you are taught. Stick with Shotokan its a very popular art and loved by many who study it. Some MMA don't like it but they do respect it.
  6. Were Shotokan and we do. However I think a tripple punch is pretty common practice.
  7. I like to have 4hrs a week myself when teaching. But you take what you can get.
  8. It took some work but we have a few good chats going from time to time.
  9. I would think not and only for this reason. I have read where he did lockouts with only 350. For those who don't know what a lock out is its where you just bend you elbows barely and then lock them out. This is to build explosion and is done with the most weight you can hold. However I do have a friend who has posted here before who is only about 5'7 160lbs that benches well over 400lbs so he may have.
  10. Welcome
  11. Thats because we are training LOL NO the few weeks the one here was up we got some good use out of it. Well I did anyhow.
  12. I do I do
  13. No the chat was taken down because the sever could not support it or something. I hope Patrick can find a way to fix it because I for one really liked it. And I left my tweety mask in the chat room as well. So I need back in. LOL
  14. I agree that they can prob. pick up more if it was a class of all high ranks however we just don't have the numbers to offer that many classes. Their is 2 ways to look at it. 1. The way do its holding them back. 2. The way I do it teaches them how to teach, It teaches them to be patient, It brings the class closer because new students get to know and work with higher ranks. IMO its 6inches one way and half a foot the other. If uppoer ranks don't train with beginnes they don't learn to see mistakes, they don't learn self control and certin aspects of discipline. You need a mix and from time to time I do have special classes that are just for higher ranks. I teach to both so I don't just have black belts doing white belt techinques.
  15. Requires a lot of focus. We have done it some in the past to play arround with but thats about it.
  16. Not all do as pointed out. Tekki are the first ones taht come to mind. Chintie is another as is Sochin but I do understand your question. My best guess is this. Most people are right handed and to be a good MA we need to work both. By nature our left is slower and weaker so when Funakoshi and others developed kata they put the left stance first to force us to work it.
  17. In a perfect world it would be great to have all one color belts in one class but we dont have the numbers our class is never bigger than 20 students so all ranks are together. Which works ok because the higher ranks can work with the lower ones. I do seperate based on age.
  18. Shotokan we push.
  19. They are all natural standing postions just low if you think about it. We do them low to build muscle, speek, and FOCUS. Because it hurts.... They also help you balance and teach you how to work a lot of throws and takedowns once you get into the art.
  20. Just going out on a limb here. They got broken or sore ribs from a fight.
  21. The doulbe block in Heian Sandan has a few applications. 1. Blocking a punch and kick or doulbe strike in general 2. Doulbe striking the guy in the groin and jaw with backfist/hammerfist type moves. 3. Its to escape from a choke or colar grap hold 4. If you think of playing the up hand beside the head and the lower hand on the inner leg it becomes a throw. 5. If you only one punch with the outside block the changing of the two arms is a break on the arm you blocked if you attack the elbow side. Or if you attacked the inner arm it becomes a half takedown. At the least it breaks the person posture. 6. Twisting a staff out of somewons hands KK75 NO move in any kata is useless. At least speaking from a Shotokan standpoint. We teach many applaications for each move and develope new ones along the way as needed. Anytime you need help let me know.
  22. Welcome
